Analysis of Audience Research
I created a survey using the website ‘Surveymonkey’, this enabled me
to find out the types of magazines and also the types of music that
people listen to. Questions I asked ranged from age to magazine
genre to music genre. I included price information as that gives me a
rough idea as to what a particular age group would pay for my
magazine.
The first question that I asked was; ‘’Do you buy magazines?’’, six
people said yes and one said no. As social media and technology has
grown within the last few years so has how we read things. E-Books
have become increasingly popular with the invention of tablets and
Kindle’s, therefore publishers have the option to release their
magazines digitally, giving printed magazines a drop in sales. Also,
some people may not buy magazines as it’s not an interest for them
or maybe they simply don’t want to spend money on them.
Question two, ‘’If yes, how often do you buy magazines?’’ Again, this
question helps my research in the terms that it would give me a brief
insight whether to make my magazine weekly or monthly. From my
magazine research, I found out that NME is a weekly magazine
whereas Q magazine is monthly. The answer options for my question
where: daily, weekly and monthly. The most popular answer was in
fact monthly. Out of the eight people that had taken my survey: four
people buy magazines monthly, three people buy them weekly and
the eighth person skipped the question which links back to the fact
they don’t purchase magazines at all.
The next question I asked was: ‘‘what is usually the genre of
magazines you buy?’’ Options for this question included:
Gossip/celebrity/fashion, music,
lifestyle/homeware/wedding/cookery and an ‘’other’’ option. Music
was surprisingly the most popular choice with four out of the eight
people buying a music magazine over any of the other options. Two
people from the audience buy gossip magazines, none buy
lifestyle/homeware/wedding/cookery which links back to the age
range of my target market as they are young they obviously don’t
need to purchase magazines about weddings and such. The ‘’other’’
option received two answers: ‘’magazines about minecraft’’ and
‘’magazines about dogs.’’
‘’How much do you pay per magazine?’’ was another important
question I asked. The feedback I have received from this will help me
decide a price for my magazine. As my target market are young
people and students, they don’t have money they can waste so an
expensive, glossy magazine would not be appropriate therefore I
would experience a drop in overall sales. The options for this
question where: ‘’£0.00 - £0/99’’, ‘’£1.00 - £2.99’’, £3+’’. The most popular
answer was ‘’£1.00 - £2.99’’ so I will make my magazine this price.
The final question was a question people could have multiple
answers to: ‘’what music do you listen too?’’ Teenagers have a very
complex and a variation in the music that they listen to, some people
listen to almost all genres and some people stick to a specific genre.
My magazine will be based around artists of the ‘Indie’ genre but I do
want my magazine to be like Q in the terms that it can appeal to a
very wide audience. The options for this question were: Rock, Pop,
R&B, Classical. Country, Indie, Alternative, Screamo and an ‘’other’’
option. 4 out of the 8 people listen to rock, 3 out of 8 listen to pop, 2
out of 8 listen to R&B, 1 listens to Classical, 1 listens to Country, 3
listen to Indie, 2 listen to alternative, 4 listen to scream and 3 listen to
other genres that were not included: Indie rock, Hip Hop and
Hardcore Rock.
I will use all of the feedback I have received to help me create my
magazine. I have found out my target audiences favourite genre of
music, price range and whether or not they purchase magazines and
If they do what type.
