Analysis of similar genre 1
1. Analysis of Similar Genre - Camerawork, Editing, Sound, Mise-en-
Scene
Camerawork
In the music video that I watched, which was Only Love by Ben
Howard, the main shot types that were used were close ups, mid
shots, long shots, and establishing shots. The camera movement
mainly involved tracking and tilts.
The main close ups that were used was at the start of the video,
where the camera shows the artist himself, the bike he is riding as
well as the shadow of the bike on the floor. These three close ups
automatically show that the video is going to involve Ben Howard
and he is going on a journey. There is then another close up of the
side of his face, this time showing that he is on his bike riding down a
deserted road. The mid shots were then more involved as the video
got going, this had a good effect when it cut to a different side of the
video in which he is performing in front of a big crowd. The mid shots
help show that he has a lot of fans and they were all waving their
hands in the air enjoying his performance, then the next mid shot
was showing him actually on stage with the rest of his band playing
his instruments. These type of shots I think had a good effect on the
audience because it shows that he loves to perform and that it could
be his ‘Only Love’ which is how the video would be relevant to the
song title. The long shots are then used more and more as the video
progresses and it shows him on the bike again, the long shots help
show that he is biking around a busy city as it shows the high
buildings and cars parked all the way down the roads. These shots
also however show that he is the only person around, although there
are cars and buildings, you do not see any other people in this part of
the video, this shows the calmness of the whole song as he is
spending time on his own, which I think is a good factor for a song
like this. There are quite a lot of tracking shots when he is on the
bike, the camera follows him when he is riding, which then shows the
different areas of the city he is going, at the start he was near what
looked like quite a wooded area, then it changes to a built up city and
the Brooklyn bridge, this is the first indication that he is in New York
which is an extremely well known place to shoot a music video. The
pan shots that are used through out the video I think represent the
more calm side of the song, there is one particular shot near the
middle of the video which starts looking up at the sky, with the sun
2. slightly shining through the trees, it then slowly moves down to show
birds flying away and then eventually the side walk where he is
riding. This is a nice view for the audience and so gives them a sense
of happiness when watching the music video.
Editing
The main thing I noticed in this music video when watching it, was
the amount of cross cutting involved. There were two areas to this
video, one was of the artist calmly riding his bike through New York,
and the other was showing him on tour performing to his fans, which
looked more hectic in comparison. Another type of editing that was
used was an eye line match, in particular when he was on his bike
and he was looking at a large sign, which said ‘Not One More Death’. I
think this sign is quite important in the video because the whole
nature of the lyrics and the actual song itself is meant to be about
peace and giving shelter to each other, this sign shows that there
should be no more deaths and so has a big impact on the audience
when it is shown. Through the whole video, the editing is quite fast
paced, I think this is important when making a music video because if
it is not edited in this way and is just one long video, the audience
could easily find it boring and not be very interested in watching it. I
also like the idea of there being two different areas to one video,
instead of the audience having to follow one main story which is
what a lot of videos have, they can follow two different ones,
breaking it up a bit and making it more interesting.
Mise-en-Scene
The location of the video, we soon realise is in America. This is a good
place to shoot a music video because it is so well known, especially as
later on in the video the Empire State building is shown and so the
audience can see he is in New York, as this is a city that a lot of people
love, the music video can automatically be enjoyed.
The costume that Ben Howard was wearing was very casual, he has a
plain grey t-shirt with jeans and trainers, and this connoted the
simplicity of his music and showed that you don’t need to have loads
of ‘glamour’ and backing dancers to make a good video.
The lighting in this video was all low key, if the song that was used
was a more upbeat song the lighting would probably have been
brighter to emphasize the energy in the song, however ‘Only Love’ is
a very slow and meaningful song, therefore bright lighting would
probably not go with the setting and tone of the music.
3. The props that are used in this music video also help connote the
peacefulness of the song; usually bicycles are not objects that are
used in an angry or offensive manner, so showing the artist riding on
the bike around the city showed how he was not a harmful person,
which reflected a lot on the song. The USA flag was also used quite a
lot in this video, this showed that American citizens can be very
patriotic and therefore the lyrics of ‘Only Love’ could have also been
associated with the love of their country.
Sound
The sound in this video is all non-diegetic, the music is played over
the top of the video, and there is no sign of the artist singing to the
camera, which is what sometimes occurs in music videos. There is no
background noise, which is a usual convention of a typical music
video because the main sound that the audience wants to hear is the
song that they like. I think that the idea that the music was just
played over the top of the video suited the genre well; folk rock is
easier to express when the artist doesn’t have to worry about singing
to the audience, but just showing feelings and emotions within the
video.
