2. What the FDA is supposed to do
• Protect our health by assuring that all foods (except for meat from
livestock, poultry, and some egg products) are safe, sanitary, wholesome,
and properly labeled.
• Make sure that biological products (medical products that are intended to
treat diseases and medical conditions like vaccines) and medical devices
(instruments, apparatus, implement, machines etc.) are safe and effective
for human use
• Protect the public from electronic product radiation which is basically any
product that uses electricity to power an electronic circuit that gives off
radiation. Such as a microwave or X-rays.
• Controlling tobacco products
• Assuring dietary supplements and cosmetics are safe and properly labeled
• Advancing the public health by helping to speed product innovations
The FDA is just trying to make sure we don’t make any hare-brained
mistakes. They supervise, investigate, and research just about anything.
3. FDA’s Role in Preventing Disease and
Developing Vaccines:
The staff in the center for
Biologics Evaluation and
Research regulates
biological products.
They also control the
availability of safe and
effective vaccines.
4. Food Safety and Nutrition
For many years the public
depended upon FDA to
prevent foods from being
contaminated and to set
standards for labeling
foods so that people
know what they are
buying. They have to
protect the food supply
and ensure its safety and
nutrients.
