More than Just Lines on a Map: Best Practices for U.S Bike Routes
Question 1:In what way does your media product use, develop/challenge forms and conventions of real media products
1. I've been able to meet the specific codes and conventions that are present in
existing music magazines
2. Developing forms of representation
Facial expressions and posture
When male artists are featured in K-Pop
magazines, They tend to have quite confident
postures in order to appeal to female audiences
for the sake of the female gaze. Despite the
flawless skin and healthy thin figures. Male artists
display manly facial expressions in order to
captivate the hearts of their fans. Gestures such as
lip swiping, neck grabbing or head tilts are
common poses used by male idols. Poses that
were used by existing artists featured in K-Pop
magazines such as @Star1 and STARAZ influenced
my choice of poses for models in order to
accurately display representations of male idols.
3. Developing Forms of representations
Little or no negative space
With existing western pop magazines such as
WeLovePop and eastern pop magazines such as
Bromide. I’ve also been able to display how there’s
constant saturation of bright colours, shapes and sell
lines. The composition of all my sell lines allows the
focus of the reader to be placed on the model since
all negative space is covered by these sell lines. The
same applies to my double page spread. There are
many bold shapes which are part of the aesthetics of
the page which was inspired from existing DPS’ by
WeLovePop magazine. Images Are also very
dominating in my article. Which was influenced by
an existing article by Bromide Magazine. Most pop
magazines are dominated
by pictures and so, I have
Continuously developed
Forms of hegemonic
Representations of the
K-Pop music genre.
4. Challenging forms of representations
Organised Layout
My DPS followed a more western layout with no box
images. This isn’t the case for K-Pop magazines as
shown be a DPS from POPCORN magazine. The box
images are vastly used throughout the DPS whereas
all backgrounds were removed from my images and I
placed text around these images rather then placing
them elsewhere. The layout I used is more common
with other music genres but isn’t the case for most
pop magazines which exist especially for the K-Pop
music genre. It could be argued that more
contemporary pop magazines are joining the
mainstream layouts used by other music genres
which can be seen on the articles below.
5. Why develop/challenge
representations?
As I’m branching out to a UK K-Pop audience I’ve hybridised some
aspects of the traditional conventions that audiences would expect
from a K-Pop music genre. I have mainly maintained most
conventions because these are what appeal audiences to the genre
such as the poses and the gestures of artists. However the purpose
of challenging representations such as the layout of a pop
magazine is to hybridise the traditional aspect of a pop magazine in
order to suit a more western and contemporary audience. This is
necessary because from my magazine survey, most stated they
were at the age of 14-18. which is the desirable age for a K-Pop
target audience so having a contemporary layout which is
organised would be appropriate in order for audiences to buy my
media product if all conventions appeals to my audience.
