Case Studies
Freelancing for enterprises including 3Com, HP, Novell, and some 12 others, Joan conducted and
analyzed primary and secondary research to validate target audience needs. She then translated
implications therefrom into results-driven branding and positioning communications programs.
Case Study: Joan’s research revealed that market analysts misunderstood the value of Xircom’s
external laptop network adapters as a product category. By Joan repositioning these products as
transforming laptops into corporate network assets, market analysts then validated the category
and branded Xircom as the knowledgeable category leader. Xircom achieved its business
objective of selling to large enterprises.
Case Study: With constant advancements in networking technology, St. Jude Medical saw a
business opportunity to embed remote patient monitoring capabilities into its Implantable Cardiac
Devices (ICDs). The executive team wanted further validation for its new business strategy. Joan
functioned as a team contributor, doing research that focused on three key areas:
Related case studies such as remote monitoring for patients with diabetes, the growing
demographics of web-connected seniors
Compelling business propositions and potential barriers among St. Jude Medical’s
ecosystem partners (cardiologists, electro-physiologists, disease management firms, and
insurance companies)
Competitive analysis of networking industry leaders with technology for remote patient
monitoring
Upon project completion, the St. Jude Medical team had the validation it needed to proceed, and
understood how to satisfy its ecosystem partners’ technical and business requirements. The
client also benefitted from a list of possible technology partners, and Joan’s approach strategies
of how to recruit them.
