The purpose of the WIDGaT tool, created by the Accessibility Research Centre at Teesside University, is to support the production by non-technical staff of widgets that meet the needs of learners with disabilities who may require their learning resources to be adapted or personalised.
The WIDGaT toolkit (Design Template, Authoring Tool and Widget Repository) supports tutors and carers to design and develop, without any technical knowledge beyond basic computer literacy, open source, W3C standard widgets.

  • The purpose of the WIDGaT tool, created by the Accessibility Research Centre at Teesside University, is to support the production by non-technical staff of widgets that meet the needs of learners with disabilities who may require their learning resources to be adapted or personalised. Context WIDGaT is the worlds first code-free widget design andauthoring tool for education. What this means: Code free – it requires no programming or coding skills byusers Aimed specifically at the creation of widgets to supportlearning Focus is on supporting disabled students – but hasmainstream application Supported by a number of funded projects from JISC – WIDE,WIDGaT, WiP.

Rationale Widgets Apps and Gadgets (WAGs) are now integral to daily lifebut there are limited number of WAGs available in theeducational domain Previous experience (WIDE) showed interest in widgets forpersonalisation of learning but resource intensive in terms ofdevelopers time. There are no other widget authoring tools available in educationfor non-developers Support staff in meeting the needs of disabled students Develop a solution that Is equally effective for mainstream education (HE and FE) Can potentially be used by both staff and students Supports sharing, re-use and adaptation
