Hierarchy exists everywhere in society and nature, though it is not permanent in nature. Hierarchy presupposes inequality or at least difference between levels. In nature, hierarchy ensures the fittest survive but humans question their own value and identity, equating it too much with what they possess and comparing themselves to others based on possessions, which leads to envy and an inability to accept those with less.
