The Holy Spirit is a person who wants to be our friend and our source of life. He empowers us for what we need to do by giving us the gifts of the Spirit. He speaks to us and directs our decisions.

he will guide you into all truth. He will
not speak on his own; he will speak
only what he hears, and he will tell you
what is yet to come.”
7. “He will glorify me because it is from me
that he will receive what he will make
known to you.”
8. ”All that belongs to the Father is mine.
That is why I said the Spirit will receive
from me what he will make known to
you.”

Theme: Life with the Holy Spirit – knowing, growing, going
Sermon: Who is the Holy Spirit?
Introduction
In Acts 19 we find a peculiar story, but just like the men in this story, we need to know more about who the Holy Spirit really is.
‘While Apollos was in Corinth, Paul traveled through the interior regions until he reached Ephesus, on the coast, where he found several believers. “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” he asked them. “No,” they replied, “we haven't even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.” “Then what baptism did you experience?” he asked. And they replied, “The baptism of John.” Paul said, “John's baptism called for repentance from sin. But John himself told the people to believe in the One who would come later, meaning Jesus.” As soon as they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then when Paul laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in other tongues and prophesied. There were about twelve men in all.’
Acts 19:1-7 (NLT)
“But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.

John 16:14 (NIV)
“All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.”
John 16:15 (NIV)
Main points
1. What is the Holy Spirit’s character?
He is just like Jesus and the Father.
He is God.
He is Spirit.
He is the real God in the real world.
He is compassionate and gracious, abounding in love and faithfulness, slow to anger and shows mercy. He is holy, all-powerful (omnipotent), all-knowing (omniscient) and everywhere (omnipresent).
2. How does the Holy Spirit work in our lives?
The Holy Spirit is a person who wants to be our friend and our source of life.
He is our encourager. The key scripture clearly states that the Father sent the Holy Spirit to come alongside us and encourage us in our journey.
He empowers us for what we need to do by giving us the gifts of the Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:1-31 and Romans 12:6-8).
The Holy Spirit is our guide – He speaks to us and directs our decisions.
3. What does the Holy Spirit do?
The best way I can explain the Holy Spirit’s work in my life is to compare it to the blood circulation system of the body. There are different arteries and veins in the body. The arteries take oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the whole body and all the organs. The veins take oxygen-depleted blood back to the heart and consequently, the lungs so that carbon dioxide can be removed from the system.
This is how Holy Spirit operates:
Arteries – He brings God’s presence and power to every part of our lives to empower and enable us to live like He wants us to and to touch our world. He brings the fruit of His character out in ours. The fruit of the Spirit is exactly that.
‘But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!’
Galatians 5:22-23 (NLT)
Veins – He removes from our lives that which is not good. If you’re able do something, it doesn’t necessarily mean, that it’s good for you. The Holy Spirit comes alongside us and removes those things that will damage us or our testimony (anger, resentment, judgement, wrong attitudes, etc.)
Application
A few years ago, I was driving down to the Kruger Park with two friends. It was a beautiful morning with mist in some places and the sun had just risen to show the majestic mountains that rose up at the end of a wide valley. Everything was perfect. As we came around a bend in the road, there was a house on the right. It was a beautiful modern house, one that seemed slightly out of place for the natural surroundings and yet, it blended perfectly with the wide valley and the mountain backdrop. It was as if the house was purposely designed and built for that location – with the view of the mountains as the focus. Having been struck by the whole picture, I was amazed to see that the house was empty. I then turned to my friend and asked why anyone would build a house and not live in it. For a long while afterwards the question kept popping into my mind: Why would anyone build a house and not live in it? Finally, the Holy Spirit spoke to me and said ‘Hardie, that is the point, no one builds a house to leave it empty!’
You are His treasured possession. He purposely designed you for the places He has called you to and He longs to live in you. He yearns to fill you in every way just like the blood circulation fills the body.
‘Don't you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself,’
1 Corinthians 6:19 (NLT)
Prayer
Father, thank you for sending the Holy Spirit. I want to be a temple for the Holy Spirit, so that my life can be filled with more of You and I can begin to resemble You.
