How does your media product reflect particular social groups?
1. How does your media product reflect particular social groups? By Heather Myers, Marc Walsh and Sarah Walsh
2. Overall we think that we have portrayed women in both a positive and negative way. Women
3. Powerful In our piece women are represented as being more powerful then men. This is shown through the three dating scenes where the women is always more powerful than the man. As in the café scene the women humiliates him by slapping and in the house scene she runs screaming out the house again showing her control over the relationship.
4. Aggressive Women can also be shown in this extract to be aggressive as shown in the café scene where the character slaps her date around the face. This could be seen as a defence mechanism as the character feels her personal space has been invaded. This is something we found In other media products such as ‘Over Her Dead Body’ where we see the character being verbally aggressive and bossy to the staff working on her wedding.
5. Unforgiving Women are seen to be unforgiving in this extract. This is shown in the house scene where the woman is running away from Peter. She shouts ‘Freak!’ in an offensive and rude tone creating a negative representation as she runs down the stairs where he then follows and yells ‘Wait! I can change.’ She carries on running away showing her insensitivity towards the situation representing women to be quite harsh and unforgiving as he is making an effort and trying to reconcile himself while she continues to run and ignores this. This is also shown in the pub scene where the women’s facial expression towards Peter seems uneasy and rude as he sneezes into a tissue and places it into a champagne glass.
7. Lonely Men are represented as lonely in this extract as Peter has resulted to finding love on a dating website as he seems to be desperate for attention and company. It seems he would like to find a companion. This is seen at the end of the clip where he says ‘I’m just looking for a nice woman who enjoys spending time with me’ which makes us sympathise with him as his loneliness becomes clear.
8. Middle Class Men In the bar scene we see the two characters sharing a bottle of Champagne in what we see as a posh bar or restaurant giving the audience the impression he is keen to impress his date and could also show his wealth. They are also represented as quite stylish and modern as we see the character in the café scene dressed in a red polo and jeans showing he cares about his appearance.
9. Dating Website Users Peter is seen to be unlucky in love as we show three past attempts at a relationship where he finally results to dating websites. His characteristics show him to be nerdy, desperate and cheesy and his lack of social awareness such as sneezing into a champagne glass creates humour for the audience. It could also make him seem rather delusional as it is not a usual thing to do on a first date. Due to these factors, he feels he must resort to dating websites in hope he may find someone special. This could portray people who use dating websites as outcasts of the social norm, but could also represent them as individual as not many people use dating websites.
