4. I – Analysis environnemental structure
A – BRASILfocus
Brazil (Federative Republic in its long form
of Brazil) is the largest state in Latin
America. With a population of about 201
million people and an area of 514 876 km2 8,
it covers half the territory of South America
(47.3%) 2, sharing borders with all countries
of the continent except Chile and Ecuador.
Brazil is the fifth largest country on the
planet, behind the United States, China,
Canada and Russia. The country is the only
legacy of Portugal on American soil, which is
reflected in its official language, Portuguese.
In 2013, Brazil's GDP amounted to 2190
billion US dollars, making it the seventh
largest economy, just ahead of Russia3.
5. Considered a great emerging power, the
country is notably a member of the United
Nations, the Mercosul, G20 and BRICS.
Militarily, the Brazilian army is ranked
among the top twenty military powers and
remains the largest in the Americas, behind
that of the US4. Despite the size of its
economy, Brazil is still a country where
social and economic inequalities are among
the highest in the world. With China, India
and Russia, Brazil is considered one of the
few countries to have the potential to one
day become a superpower mondiale5,6
6. Brazil's population is characterized by
significant ethnic and cultural diversity:
according to the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of
Geography and Statistics), there are in
Brazil 47.7% White, 43.1% mestizo, 7.6% of
black and about 2% of Asians and Native
Americans. Many Brazilians are descended
from European countries, mainly Italy7, of
Allemagne8, Spain and Portugal. The
majority of black Brazilians, meanwhile, are
from sub-Saharan Africa, mainly Angola9.
Like its neighbors, Brazil is a country with a
Christian majority (89%). With 123 million
faithful, it is the second largest Christian
nation in the world behind the United States
and the first Catholic nation (the US being
largely Protestant party).
7. Rich in natural resources, Brazil has been
identified as a new power pétrolière10: huge
pre-salt oil fields were discovered in the
basins of Santos and Campos, off Rio de
Janeiro. The recoverable reserves have
continued to be re-estimated on the rise: in
2013, they are estimated at 106 billion
barrels according AIE11. "Either more
reserves discovered in Brazil than in any
other country," says the agency.
