Gloc9 is a Filipino rapper whose song "Walang Natira" reflects on the Philippines' economic problems. The rapper discusses how many Filipinos feel they have no choice but to leave the country and work overseas as OFWs to find employment. While OFWs help the economy, it would be better if jobs could be created domestically so Filipinos did not have to leave their families. The rapper effectively conveys strong emotions about this issue and makes the listener think deeply about the sacrifices of OFWs and how the country's situation could be improved.

“Walang Natira”
Or Nothing’s Left is a rap by Gloc9. Gloc9 is an Awit Award-winning Filipino
rapper, and his song “Walang Natira” is a reflection of our country’s economic status.
“Mga kabayan natin ay lumilipad, lumalabas para pumunta ng ibang bansa at doon
magtanas,” says a verse in the rap. The rapper’s main point is about the labor and
employment of our country. We know that a lot of people are unemployed and
underemployed, and because of that, our fellow Filipinos leave for other countries to work
as OFW’s. Although OFW’s help in our economy, it is still better if they would work here in
our country and make our country grow. Because when Filipinos leave, they leave their
families and leave with their talents and skills.
In the video, we can see that as the rapper says the words, there is emotion. And we
can see competence there because he knows what he is saying, and he feels what he is saying
too. He also speaks accordingly in our situation, that we are experiencing economic crisis.
He uses simple words, with deep meanings like, “Lupa kong sinilangan ang pangalan ay
Pinas ngunit bakit parang puno na ang prutas ay pitas.” He relays well what he is trying to
say and makes sure that the viewers would really understand what his point is. As a viewer,
we can be affected in the rapper’s manner of speaking and delivery of words, but much
affected with the words he uses and how he uses them.
An element of performativity is present, as there is an intention to inform us what is
really happening in our society and about the sacrifices of OFW’s. The words in the rap also
trigger emotions; it makes us empathize with the Filipinos who work abroad. In the verse, it
says, “Ganyan ba ang kapalit ng buhay ng Pilipino, lilisanin ang pamilya aamo kahit na
sino,” instead of serving our own country, we serve others, and instead of them taking care
of their own child, they take care of other’s child. The words also make us think and re-think
about our situation, if we would let this thing continue and loose great potentials in our
country.
I just want to add that I can personally relate to the rap because my mother is an
OFW. And my heart really goes to them, as I know the sacrifices my mother has made for
us. That even if she doesn’t want to be away from us, she cannot do anything because
2. working abroad is the best option and perhaps the best choice. We should really recognize
the efforts of our OFW’s but we should not let anymore Filipinos to leave our country. We
do not want to wake up and regret when there’s “nothing’s left.”
