3. CONCEPT‐dialectic with the present and the past,
nature and art
This diploma project proposes the design of a
Sustainable Music Academy in the center of Athens.
The plot that was selected to host this use is adjacent to
the park of Academy of Plato, one of the most
important historic and spiritual sites of Athens related
to the life and work of the great ancient greek
philosopher Plato. The diploma proposes the design of
the music school as an Open All‐day Cultural Music
Center that refers to the park and promotes its cultural
rival.

It is also proposed the redesign of the park in relation
to the music school enriched with athletic and
cultural facilities, urban equipment and local
Mediterranean vegetation. The proposal aims to
offer a pleasant cultural and naturalistic walk to the
visitors of the park, both residents and tourists,
pedestrians and cyclists. Taking into account the
existing archaeological project of the unification of all
the historic and touristic sites of Athens, the project
also proposes the creation of an adequate and
relaxing ending of this project in the west part of the
city of Athens.

FUNCTIONAL PROGRAM‐ functional differentiation, flexibility in the use
The building complex comprises of two basic functional groups. The first one includes all
the classes of group core lessons and the administration which are placed in the upper
structure of the complex. The second one includes the personal or small group classes
where the music lessons are held and which are found in the lower‐underground part of
the complex. A third distinctive unit is the Auditorium which is placed in the western
side of the plot.

• ARCHITECTURAL LANGUAGE-MATERIALITY adaptation to a
diverse environment with both post-industrial and natural elements
The architectural design takes into consideration the elements of the existing post-
industrial environment of the region. In this direction the abandoned industrial
factories lent their materiality to the metallic prefabricated façades of the school. A
metallic structural system is chosen which has as a module the unit of the
teaching room. Thanks to this system the building complex is flexible and
adaptable to the ground and the general environment; more solid at the end of the
complex towards the northwest side and dismantling towards the southeast side
near the park. It also manages to give the impression at certain parts of the complex
that the building is load free and permeable, whereas at the same time solid and
rough at other sectors. Steel, metal and grate elements, glass and wood in the
north and east façades, vertical planted panels in the west façade near the
Auditorium. More rough materials, cast in situ beton walls in the underground
parts of the complex near the personal music classes.

• SUSTAINABILITY ELEMENTS- adaptable solar exposure,
ventilation, energy efficiency
The building complex incorporates in its basic conception the following
bioclimatic principals. The core of the building complex, which is also
the basic axis of circulation, is a translucent corridor that allows both
natural and mechanically controlled ventilation, adaptable at the
changing weather conditions of Greece during the year. The northwest
façade of the building is equipped with adjustable vertical blinds that
prevent the undesirable west radiation. The south facades of the
building are equipped with solar energy storing panels, and horizontal
canopies.

ANALYSIS OF THE REGION, THE CONTEXT, AND
THE GOALS OF THIS INTERVENTION.
The objective of this course is the design of an
intervention in the city scale (urban design, projet urbain).
The chosen region of intervention is a block in
Rizoupolis , at the east part of Irakleiou Av., near the train
station of ISAP, Perissos.
This region is adjacent to the municipalities of
N.Filadelpheia and N.Ionia, which were designed for the
rehabilitation of the refugees, and the municipality of Athens-A.
Patisia. It was developed as a zone of productive uses
between these densely populated residential communities.
Among the basic characteristics of this region are the
presence of industrial units, which where constructed during
the middle war, big scale athletic facilities like the stadium of
AEK and Apollon, and a cemetery. The region is crossed by a
small river-stream named Podoniftis, one of the important
streams of Attika, that flows to Kifissos. Although the local
landscape is caracterised by the presence of multiple rivers, in
most cases these are covered and disregarded. Few are the
cases where the existing rivers are maintained and preserved
as an important natural district. Distinctive green spots of the
region are the grove of N. Filadelpheia and the small grove
Prompona.

2. Abandoned industrial shell.
Nowadays, this region is characterised
by abandonment. The course proposes the
coordination of all three adjacent
municipalities for organizing a plan of
intervention that rejuvenate the region.
Among the goals of this intervention
are the enhancement of the general region by
introducing new uses and highlighting its
naturalistic and landscape beauty.

CONCEPT-ARCHITECTURAL LANGUAGE- atrium,
masrabiya, contemporary interpretation
This project is nspired from eastern models of urban
development in cities like Kourain, where the density of
the urban tissue is very high and residences are
organized around atriums. This structure produces very
characteristic typologies as a whole. Also exploring the
“masrabiya” element, that is found in the Oriental
traditional architecture as a vertical light filter, this project
experiments the projection of Oriental shaped patterns on
the roof of the complex. The roof is designed like a lace
full of square and rectangular openings, bigger at the
atriums smaller at the corridors that filter the direct sun
light and develop relevant shading effects. This “lace” is
observed as a sculpture from the taller compound
appartments.

Supervisors: I.Liakatas, Pechlivanidou. In cooperation with: Mpountouraki G.
Functional layering
In terms of the functions, the building is
organized in a way that all the public spaces
(library, exhibition room, café) are placed on the
ground level. In that way they are in direct
contact with the open patio and the visitors have
an esay and clear access..
All the other spaces related to the dance halls
lay from the first floor and above.
Movements
In the project there are two dominant movements:
(a) The public movement at the ground floor that “sinks”
the visitor gradually towards the cafeteria and the 200‐
person performance hall.
(b) The reverse upward move that “lifts” the stuents‐
dancers up to the halls of rehearsals. This movement is
highlighted with a ramp structure, comprised of wood and
metal. This route is designed to be more theatrical,
relaxed and observed by the public that is visiting the
platio. It consists another performance that is held during
the lessons.

17. Structure and materiality
The underground theatre follows a large construction grid
which is not restrictive for the upper buildind coplex,
appart from the region of the cafe.
Externally the building seems to be organized in three
“cubiclike” heavy solid volumes, connected by more
elegant light structures, where the circulation is
hosted(system of ramps and corridors).
The three volumes bear surfaces of exposed concrete cast
in situ or composed by precasted elements (as the
relevant details show).
The circulation structures are made of steel and wooden
louvers.
In this way there is a kind of rationl differentiation
between the rooms and the circulation spaces.

Τhe plot of the project is located in Glyfada, in Athens, Greece . It has an intense slope and a
spectacular view to the sea. The residential complex comprises of four residences (120sm, 100sm,
90sm and 65sm respectively) and has some public spaces as well mainly exterior ones, and a pool.
The beautiful view has been the inspiration for adapting the constructional greed of the building
complex to its orientation. Thanks to this turning all the residents enjoy a direct view to the sea.

25. 7. Urban Design near Lycabetus, Alexandras av.
Supervisors: Grafkou M., Pantzaris
In collaboration with Gitzias A., Mpountouraki G.
The subject of this project is the intervention in the ground of
Panathinaikos, near the hill of Lycabethus, one of the most beautiful hills in the
heart of Athens. The point of intervention boasts not only natural but also historic
interest. Opposite to it there is a very important historically refugee settlement, that
is consisted of “heavy” rectangular buildings arranged in a strict order. The plot is
also adjacent to Alexandras av. , one of the principal avenues of Athens. And so on
it is accessible by all means of transport. The surrounding area is densely
populated and with the exception of the hill, it lacks open spaces.
The proposed intervention highlighting the need of an additional open space
in the center of Athens targets to the creation of a Cultural meeting point for
students of the nearby schools and universities . The marketing logo of the space
is “Leisure combining reading, gaming and nature.” Taking advantage of this urban
void, this project introduces an organized square divided in two parts. The first one
is located near Alexandras av. This is designed to have a more strict modern
architectural style, so as to have a dialogue with the opposite historic refugee
complex. It is also connected with it via a pedestrian bridge, offering to the
habitats a relaxing walk with a nice view to Lycabetus hill. In the western part of the
square a canopy is formed to host a public book market, which will enrich and
revitalize the square. Opposite to this market it is designed a public library. The
square is divided in smaller rectangular sectors, some of which are planted-
available for pic-nics. Others bear solid surface and are available for games. The
square is in lower level than Alexandras av.. This ensures some protection from
the immense vehicle circulation of the avenue.
In the second part of the intervention the market canopy of the square is
evolving, as it continues towards Lycabetus hill, into a free form landscaping which
penetrates the soil and creates space for a nature exhibition space, equipped
with an Aquarium.
