Woollen Residence
The Woollen Residence is a complete refurbishment of an existing 4-bedroom house in Royal Tunbridge Wells. Closely
following the client’s desire for modern open-plan living and the adoration & respect for the celebrated modernist architect,
Richard Neutra (1892-1970), the solution maximises living space and enhances the visual connection to the external
landscaping and separate modernist garage / sculpture studio.
4. residential
Maddison Residence
The Maddison Residence is a modern, refurbishment of an Edwardian house in a conservation area in central Sevenoaks.
Originally built in 1905, the house has a clear & deliberate contrast of styles outside and inside. The kitchen, living and dining
rooms have been opened up to form one large open-plan layout and bathrooms repositioned and upgraded. Period details
have been replaced by simple modern lines, whilst full-height mirrors dramatically increase the illusion of space. Complete
with classic 1920s furniture and commercial-style lighting, the project reflects the modern ideals of its occupiers whilst
respecting the otherwise traditional streetscape.

Maddison Residence II
The Maddison Residence II project is a fully refurbished 4-bedroom house in a conservation area in central Sevenoaks, close
to Sevenoaks Station. The house has undergone a complete make-over, replacing windows, knocking down walls and Phase
II of the project is to sub-divide the plot and build a separate 2-storey, 4-bedroom house with separate driveway and garage.
The new project will be inspired in form by the modernist architects of the early twentieth century, whilst surpassing the
current building regulations with an aim to be carbon-neutral. Internally the rooms are arranged in such a way to be simple
yet highly efficient, whilst maximising natural daylight and views over mature gardens.
7. residential
Sandle Residence
The Sandle Residence is a new 100m2 extension of an existing family home, built in ca. 1850. The solution incorporates a
large over-hanging, green roof over a full-width open-plan lounge, dining area and playroom. With separate first floor guest
facilities and adjacent garage and store rooms, the project satisfies all of the client’s spatial requirements. A fully-glazed rear
façade enjoys uninterrupted views over the mature garden, whilst a continuous strip of glazed roof lights floods into the heart
of the building and respects the division between the old and the new.
8. retail
Nokia
A2D architecture is proud to be appointed as the Nokia Master Design Agency for Europe and Eurasia. Working since 2005 on
over 200 Nokia Stores in 22 different countries, A2D have assisted Nokia on new concept development, marketing displays,
trade fairs and UK headquarter design. We have also written the Nokia Store and Nokia Care Design Standards Manual on
how to build a store or care point. Nokia either host or enter several large trade fairs every year. A2D have helped design
some of the most prominent ones, including 3GSM in Barcelona, CeBIT in Hannover and the inaugural World Retail Congress
in Barcelona. A2D continue to design Nokia stores throughout Europe and Eurasia, most prominently in Italy, Russia and
Turkey, where Nokia are keen to establish and maintain a firm foothold in market share and customer experience.
9. retail
Nike
Nike is the world’s leading supplier of athletic shoes and clothing. Immediately prior to founding A2D architecture, Darren
worked as in-house architect in the European Headquarters in Hilversum, near Amsterdam. During this time there were 60
projects in 5 different store concepts for shopping centers and high streets all over Europe. The strength of the Nike Retail
concept lies within clear, simple, functional furniture placed within instantly recognisable gender-specific layouts. A bold
entrance portal and deep suspended ceilings signify the customer’s transcendence into a Nike-branded world, full of heritage,
where large images of Nike-sponsored athletes adorn the walls and sporting success is “in the air”.

BDP
BDP is a large interdisciplinary practice of over 900 architects, interior designers, engineers and urbanists, based in studios all
around the world and with experience in all major building sectors. Prior to founding A2D both Darren and Olivia worked in
BDP’s largest UK office, London. Our projects at that time included major extensions, refurbishments and brand new shopping
centers through UK, France, Spain, Portugal, Beirut and Germany (often mixed development projects with major changes to
road infrastructures). Working in medium to large size teams our roles included concept & feasibility studies, master planning,
preparing detailed design packages and construction drawing sets.

Nokia
In 2008 Nokia underwent a major refurbishment of their UK Headquarters in Southwood, nr. Farnborough, UK. A2D re-
designed all communal areas, including reception, concierge, atrium, café, lounge, restaurant and meeting rooms. The design
included : a Nokia Flagship retail installation; a circular reception desk made from black and white corian; bespoke meeting
tables and benches; 2 enormous suspended light sculptures in the quadruple height atrium (previously part of the Nokia-
sponsored Regent Street Christmas Lights); previously land-locked meeting rooms converted into a Media Lounge; and the
refurbishment of an existing café and restaurant. The building was awarded Gold certification under LEED CI 2.0, one of the
first ever in UK in this category.
12. commercial
Corporate Offices
Prior to founding A2D both Darren and Olivia worked with some major corporate brands, designing their office environments.
Typical projects would include bespoke receptions, meeting rooms, tea points, canteens, copy centers, toilets, as well as
office layouts. Each project required detailed questionnaires, benchmarking, adjacency analysis, as well as corporate identity
related materials selection and furniture specifications. Wherever possible new ways of working policies would be applied,
creating hot desking, satellite working and flexible environments.

P2
The P2 Group is a manufacturing company, based in the Netherlands, China and USA, specialising in custom retail fixturing
and POS solutions. Their clients include global brands such as Barclays, Honda, Nike, Miele and Nokia. A2D were invited
to redesign part of their Dutch Headquarters. Housed in a former bulb warehouse in an Amsterdam School style (J. Zietstra
1928), our solution incorporates open-plan office space, customer showrooms and meeting rooms all around the perimeter
of an indoor lake. Four oversized, hollow, suspended “beehives” delineate and illuminate the office area, whilst allowing free
movement in between. The glass and steel showrooms are designed to be flexible frameworks of raised floors and suspended
ceiling grids to accommodate any possible retail interior design. The meeting room has 3 walls of full-height polarized glass,
which can be turned opaque at the flick of a switch. The central feature is an indoor lake with its own island of palm trees
and mini waterfall, placed directly under a massive 8 x 8m rooflight.
14. competition
Lightbox Pavilion
The Art Fund Pavilion architecture competition requested a design for a new, free-standing exhibition space for pieces of
art, whilst also offering possibilities for party and lecture spaces for 30 or more people. Set within a strict area schedule,
the pavilion must be constructed in a modular system, able to be easily deconstructed and moved elsewhere. After a brief
exhibition tour, the proposed pavilion is to be sited directly adjacent to the Lightbox Art Gallery in Woking. Our solution is
Oculus, the Latin word for eye, and is designed to be a uniform backdrop and means to viewing the arts, whether 2D or 3D
pieces or performance. Oculus is a continuous occupied wall, featuring stairs and upper gallery and retractable seating and
sun canopies.
15. competition
Bohemian Hostel for Backpackers
The competition organised by Arquitectum is set on a piece of land adjacent to the Museum of Contemporary Art by Richard
Meier (1995) in the Gothic Quarter part of central Barcelona. Its purpose is to provide a new youth hostel for bohemian
travellers and a new interruption on Barcelona’s skyline. Our solution is Bohome, a 100m tall glass and steel tower, containing
50 individual accommodation pods, suspended in animation. Each pod, although linked to its neighbour, maintains its own
sense of identity and space and has commanding views of the city.
16. competition
Close the Gap
The challenge in the international competition to ‘Close the Gap’ of the East Coast Greenway, New York, is not just an exercise to
complete an existing transport circuit, but also an opportunity to create a destination rather than a transition.
