This panel of higher education policy leaders will present a forecast of several critical trends that will have an enormous impact on higher education in the not-so-distant future. Access to postsecondary education and degree completion for this country's under-represented minority student population is a priority in this country. Some states are forecasting significant declines in college-going rates, while others are facing a swell in new student demand. Public financing for higher education has been in a crisis mode for several years in many states. The hope of new technologies, such as broadband networks, is exciting – but how will new applications be funded? David Longanecker, President, Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (CO) Bill Harvey, Executive Director, International Reading Association (DE) Dennis Jones, President, National Center for Higher Education Management Systems (CO)

Chaired by Lydia A. Hollie, JD/MAED, the Long Beach Youth and Gang Violence Task Force, in collaboration with the Long Beach Weed and Seed Program Steering Committee, spearheaded efforts that led to the acquisition of $400,000 for the Long Beach Gang Reduction, Intervention and Prevention Project. This project was designed to address critical unmet community needs necessary to effectively address growing youth andgang violence through a youth-centered, community-wide approach. Project efforts are expected to reduce violent crimes, decrease the number of gang-related offenses, and thereby increase self-esteem and self-worth. In April 2008, the California Governor's Office awarded $400,000 to the city of Long Beach to advance these efforts. In February 2009, the Long Beach Youth and Gang Violence Task Force transitioned into the Long Beach CalGRIP Advisory Council with direct oversight of fund allocations and program outcomes.

This presentation is intended to demystify the admissions process by providing an overview, with statistics, charts and studies. The goal is to put students and families at ease at an understandably nerve-wracking. It's also intended to raise awareness of "snake oil salesmen" in the admissions game who may attempt to mislead and take advantage of vulnerable and anxious parents, as well as call attention to the dysfunctional high school guidance system across the country—a system in which 6 in 10 college-going graduates say their high school guidance counselors failed them.
