  • 1. SSRPSmall Scale Research Project
  • 2. ResearchThe primary objective is to develop yourresearch skills.It is also designed to make you aware of thechallenges, difficulties and interests involved insifting through a variety of sources andresources.
  • 3. TOP SSRP TIPChoose a research topic or area that interestsyou and (hopefully) an area that you knowsomething about
  • 4. Not all of the material and resources that youdiscover will be relevant. You must learn todiscard what is not of value. As well as presentneatly your useful findings.The critical framework is also important. Forexample, the research around a particular groupof films will be quite different depending onwhether the focus is on, say, STAR, or GENRE orETHNICITY.
  • 5. You are required to conceive your researchproject around one specific film. However youwill also be required to reach out to include atleast two other films.The one film is your Focus Film (your primarysource); the other two films are used to supportarguments stemming from the central FocusFilm.
  • 6. The key success with the SSRP is your ownmotivation.A ‘motivated’ research project is one in whichyou have a personal interest and a genuinedesire to become better informed about thearea of study.
  • 7. Applying a Critical FrameworkThe most popular critical frameworks with studentsare:STAR/PERFORMERAUTEUR &GENREAll of these frameworks depend on identifying a setof recurring characteristics and then consideringinteresting manifestations of these (as well asinteresting variations) in particular film examples.
  • 8. AUTEUR & STAR/PERFORMER are similar. Theyare both person-based. It is possible to talkabout the characteristic ‘signature’ of an auteurfilm maker or star/performer.The Autuer or Star/Performer brings suchdistinctive qualities to a film that it partlydetermines overall meaning and response.
  • 9. Social, Political and Cultural Studies, GenderIssues and Ethnicity are three criticalframeworks that, in different ways, encourage amore explicit engagement with ideology (or‘messages and values’).These frameworks may be addressed through aperson-based approach where, for example, thepolitics, gender or ethnicity of those involved inmaking a film or a body of work is investigatedfor its impact on meaning and audienceresponse. This can be contemporary or historicalfilms and/or film makers.

Institution and Technology critical approachesoften require students to research theeconomics of the film industry.This approach may be person-centred (e.gJames Cameron and 3-D) or institution centred(economic logic of 3-D for 21st CenturyAudience)You could do an historical study. For exampleyou would investigate the moment when amajor development look place.
  • 11. First Stage: Map out an area of study.Second Stage: Decide on a critical frameworkThe research project is meant to be Small Scaleand Focused. Please do not offer a general, wiki-pedia style overview of your area.
