Editor's Notes
The second issue pointed out by Goodhart is “the decline of a shared sense of community, local and national” (Portes 2013), this is explained to be the cause of immigrants choosing not to assimilate into British culture. It is unfair to say that someone must learn the behaviours and take on the same morals and values of the people of the society they migrate to, and the idea ignores multiculturalism and being able to embrace cultural diversity with acceptance. Migrants should be able to hold their cultural values and practices, as long they too respect British culture and the laws of the state.
As Goodhart argues that “low skilled immigrants have taken jobs from unskilled natives, leaving them languishing on benefits” (Portes 2013), Britains feel as though their government is just letting immigrants walk through the door to employment and success, whilst leaving native citizens waiting in cues for dole benefits. Image 10 shows a man holding a sign in a protest that reads ‘British jobs for British people’, which conveys that native citizens must be struggling to find employment. However pushing the blame to immigrants, is a display of cultural inequality and is going against multiculturalism by rejecting the acceptance of people from other countries, working and being educated in a new homeland.
