The Peru Cocoa Alliance: 28,000ha of fine and flavor cocoa under Agroforestry Systems Experiences
1. The Peru Cocoa Alliance (PCA) :
28,000 ha of Fine and Flavor Cocoa under
Agroforestry Systems Experience’s
A contribution for a bio diverse and carbon positive agriculture
with former illegal coca growers in San Martín, Huánuco and
Ucayali in Peruvian Amazonia
Global Landscape Forum | Paris
Palais du Congress, 5-6 December 2015
2. The problem and the challenge
• 3,2 million hectares deforested and
degraded in San Martin, Huánuco
and Ucayali regions.
• At least 180,000 small producers
live there.
• They need a business model to
overcame poverty and
simultaneously restore landscape…
3. PCA Agroforestry System Business Model´s Principles
• Market concept: “market niche” = differentiation by cocoa
unique flavors, “market driven” = direct contact with chocolate
makers.
• Biodiversity as competitive advantage: 7 varietal species of fine
flavor cocoa in PCA model.
• Productivity model: combine “sexual intercomptibility” among
varietal species of fine flavor cocoa to reach high yields.
• “Climate model”:restoring the landscape incorporating timber
species as a source of long term income and CO2 secuestration.
• Associativity with private partnership: to reduce transactions
costs and to take advantage from the “private know how”.
4. Trinitario hybrid cocoa selected by the
Peru Cocoa Alliance for its arrangements.
The Alliance has selected seven trinitario clones
that comply with the fine flavor characteristics:

12. Lesson from the Alliance experience
• It is possible to incorporate massively small producers living in
deforested and degraded areas into a technical, commercial,
biodiverse y carbon positive solid business model.
• However , it is necessary to expand the strategic partnership
between associated small farmer and private sector like chocolate
makers, forest species processing companies, investment funds, etc,
using anchor firms, “farming management companies”,
cooperatives, as aggregators and facilitators of these long term
relationships.
• Titling is a key enabler condition for private sector and small
producers strategic partnership. Only 24% of our farmers has land
title.
