4. The Name Zoroaster
o Zoroaster is based from the Persian word
“Zarathustra”:
Zarath – yellow and Ustra– camels yellow camels
Zara – golden and Ushers – light golden light
o Other names that may refer to the
Persian prophet are: Zartosht, Zaratas,
Zarathushtra, and Zares.
5. Miracles on his Birth
o When Zoroaster was born, he laughed
instead of cried.
o His nurse throw him under galloping horses
and attempted to take his life through fire,
yet he was not harm.
o Turanian King Durasrobo hired an assassin,
but his hand was paralyzed before he could
kill the child.
o Also, the king sent cattle to trample
Zoroaster, but it didn't hurt him.
6. Early Life
o In his early years, Zoroaster displayed
great wisdom, arguing with wise men.
o At the early age of 16, he displayed
intense love and compassion for all living
beings.
o At the age of 20, he left his home, to lead
a life of purity and virtue. He spent his
time in meditation and reflections.
7. Family Life
o Zoroaster had three wives of whom the last
was Hvovi (Good Cattle), the daughter of
King Vishtaspa's prime minister.
o With his first wife, he had one son and three
daughters; while he had two sons by his
second wife.
8. Vision of Zoroaster
o Around the age of 30, Zoroaster had a vision
of the angel Vohu Mana, who told him a
divine revelation from Ahura Mazda.
o Part of the revelation included a drive to
become an itinerant preacher for the new
faith.
9. Vision of Zoroaster
o During the next 10 years, Zoroaster had other
visions in which each of the archangels of
Ahura Mazda appeared and revealed further
truth to him:
Vohu-Mana (love)
Armaiti (piety)
Haurvatat (wholeness or perfection)
Ameretat (immortality)
Asha (knowledge of the law of God)
Kshathra (loving service)
10. Later Life
o Zoroaster's ideas did not take off quickly
and he only had one convert:
Maidhyoimanha (his cousin)
o After 12 years, Zoroaster went to the
country of King Vishtaspa (in Bactria).
11. Conspiracy
o The Kavis and Karpans, the chiefs of
devil-worshippers, poisoned the ears of
King Vishtaspa against the prophet and
accused him of being sorcerer.
o They succeeded in convincing the King
to put Zoroaster behind the bars and
make him die of starvation.
12. Saved by the
Lord
o Zoroaster was put into prison for
sometimes and was later saved by the
Lord, for he cured the King’s favorite
black horse with the following conditions:
The king would accept the new faith
The king would consent that his son Isfendiar
would defend the new faith
The king would allow to covert Queen
Hautosa
The king would reveal the names of those
who had plotted against him and punish
them
13. King Vishtaspa’s
Conversionalso demanded four
o King Vishtaspa
conditions:
King wanted to know his final destiny and
place in heaven
His body would become invulnerable
He would have universal knowledge
His soul would not leave his body until
resurrection
o The King and Queen accepted
Zoroaster's ideas and made them the
official religion of their kingdom.
14. Death of Zoroaster
o According to tradition, Zoroaster lived for 77
years, thus indicating that he died about 551
BCE.
o The manner of Zoroaster’s death is unknown.
Some legends reported that he died peacefully,
while others said that he was killed while
praying.
o The death of Zoroaster is commemorated in
Iran on December 26, known as “Zarathust No
Diso”.
