1. Ivan Garcia
DNA:
UNC came over to give us a three seminar on DNA and proteins. First we started off with a simple experiment about DNA extraction involving protease, soap, Gatorade and alcohol. Basically at the end we had strands of DNA covered with salts from the protease and Gatorade which preserved it, and the soap had a lysis effect on the cell membrane. Afterwards the next day we extracted DNA, performed a PCR and learned about microbiology. During our PCR we extracted and amplified DNA, so we could then run it through an agarose gel electrophoresis.
The different strands showed in the gel indicated the size of the strands of DNA extracted. We worked with UNC undergraduates on GFP (green fluorescent protein) on bacteria and macrophages. With several different samples of GFP bacteria, we saw them glowing in the dark and under UV microscopy. Those three days were very interesting and educational, I can personally say that I acquired techniques and a lot more knowledge about many topics in science.
