various reasons:
− Economic Climate
− Mechanization
− Quickness of Mountain Top Removal
− Price of other energy sources
− Larger amounts in other regions (ie: Wyoming)

39. Shifting to efficient Lighting:
Avoid building 705 new coal fired power plants.
Raise efficient standards for 15 more appliances:
Avoid building another 16 coal plants.
In 2006 alone, Energy Star programs saved some $14
billion on American Utility bills and helped avoid peak
power demands equivalent to the capacity of 70 new
power plants.
World Efficiency: Gains in lighting and appliance efficiency alone would enable us
to: Avoid building 1410 coal fired power plants.
(More than 1382 new coal plants projected to be built by 2020)

Editor's Notes
Appalachian Region is defined by the Appalachian Commission which was established in 1965 to promote economic development in the region. It contains parts of 12 states and all of 1, West Virginia. The Region includes 420 counties. It extends more than 1,000 miles, from southern New York to northeastern Mississippi, and is home to 24.8 million people. (ARC.gov)
NOTE: Family values are deeply rooted in Appalachians. Many live within minutes of another family member, sometimes all living the same hollow. A connection to the land, faith in God, and loyalty to where you’re from are key components to Appalachian families.
In order to truly connect with the wonders of Appalachia, one must take advantage of the many outdoor activities. Ie: visiting state parks, atv trails, white water rafting, rock climbing, kayaking, etc.
Coal slurry= cleaning coal (Buffalo Creek 1972-125 killed; Martin Co, KY 2000: 1000s homeless. 250 M gallons, Exxon Valdez: 11 million gallons. Coal ash= burning coal (TVA authority-2008) 900X greater risk of cancer when living by ash impoundment. 60% of impoundments are unlined. (EPA 2007); Marsh Fork: 998 would die. Recently moved this past year.
Note that most Appalachian literature uses nature as a central character for the story, holding true to its role in the Appalachian lifestyle. Encourage students to always take advantage of reading and viewing films that shine light on the beauty and not the stereotypes of Appalachia. Also, students should always be seeking films and lit that challenge them to explore the issues we’ve discussed in this powerpoint.
