3. Announcements!
These will be quick and to the point.
1) Remember that we don’t have a lot of time
left. Keep on top of due dates.
2) Thanksgiving is coming in 3 weeks. That
week will be light work, but make sure
you’re bearing in mind that it is coming.
3) I am still getting questions that are
answered in the class materials. From this
point on, if you ask one of those
questions, I just won’t respond. So if I
don’t respond to you, check class
materials first.
4. Activity
When I asked what you’d like to learn, many of you
mentioned that you would like more work with photo
editing software.
So today, we’re going to do a hopefully fun focused
remix. You can do this in pairs if you wish, but if you
haven’t had a lot of experience with Photoshop you
should work solo. I wanted you to do it together so you
could ask each other for help if you get lost.
5. Context…
We’ve been talking about remix and IP law,
so this is a chance to do a remix where we
might be doing some “strange” stuff IP law-
wise and it’s a chance to practice.
So what I want you to do is “remix” a comic
book page (or two, if you need two). To do
this you need to at minimum remove and
replace the text, though to really get into the
spirit of remix you will want to move the cells
around, too (and perhaps take cells from
different books).
6. Goal
Your comic remixes are going to be “one sheet” posters
for one of the things this month “is.”
What do I mean? Next slide, please, for some
Wikipedia knowledge dropping…
7. November is Native American Heritage Month,
Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month, COPD
Awareness month,[1] National Novel Writing
Month, Alzheimer's Disease Awareness Month,
American Diabetes Month, Lung Cancer
Awareness Month, National Homeless Youth
Awareness Month, Crohn's & Ulcerative Colitis
Awareness Month, National Pomegranate
Month in the United States,[2] and the month
dedicated to the Holy Souls in Purgatory in the
Roman Catholic Church. November is also
International Drum Month.
8. In other words…
There are plenty of causes that call
November their month.
Pick one. Then you will make your comic
page into a remix that somehow comments
on that issue/that thing. While I won’t be
asking you to print and hang these, think of
them that way. I will probably put them on the
web unless you’d prefer I didn’t.
So we know the task and the goal. Now you
need the raw materials, right?
9. Go here:
I want you to go to http://marvel.com/digitalcomics/free/
This site will allow you to browse Marvel’s free-to-view
digital comics.
So you will find images/pages that you like to use as
source material.
10. But wait!
How do I get them to my computer?
That’s easy. Hit the “print screen” button on the
keyboard. Open a new document in Photoshop,
and go to “paste.” This will paste the contents of
your screen into a Photoshop image document
that you can then manipulate.

12. These last few slides
Are images from the video that you might want
to have stationary on your screen. They
describe, briefly, the tools on the Photoshop
toolbar. Your version on campus may vary
slightly from mine at home. I have the newest
one, and I think the labs are one version behind.
But the basics will be the same. The icon might
just look a touch different.

Oh, snap! No speakers!
No problem! This video has no audio track!
See, I’m always thinkin’ ahead!
When you finish your image, save it as a .jpg
and email it to me. alexa325@msu.edu if you
somehow forgot
