Varanasi … since time immemorial

Early in the morning well before sunrise

on the banks of the Ganga, the holiest of all rivers

large crowds gather for the surya-darshan

some take to the waters to enjoy the best views

of the long line of ancient ghats

leaving busy crowds far behind…

the boats sail past old palaces belonging to royal families across India

and ancient temples

from every possible place people wait for the sunrise

the boat passes the bathing ghats

some seek salvation in groups

some in solitary meditation

the palaces speak of a glorious past

alongside some even more timeless offerings

rafts for birds to drink and bath in peace away from the congested town and river banks

then comes the sunrise to the furious applause of cameras

back on the ghats life goes on as always

the reverent pray

the not so reverent catch up with friends

some seek salvation through alms

birth and death an eternal cycle

for the living simple commerce, a means for survival

on good days customers come early

on others even flowers have few takers

no guarantees in life that’s the secret

keep your faith whatever form it takes

then in the evening enjoy the arti

in the company of fellow seekers

you might find peace in the crowds
