Editor's Notes
Our device is a mobile device with a camera and projector that utilises a gestural interface.Purpose:- Encourages consumption of fruits and vegetables through tracking of diet and provision of nutritional advice Experiences with the device will help users relate better to nutrition Intuitive and engaging experience that will give users a positive perception towards nutrition and encourage them to be more active in consuming healthy food
Tertiary students (16-25 years old)Are less inclined towards eating fruits and veg. Why?: Hectic school and social lives prevents them from giving much thought as to whether their food is healthy or not encourages consumption of convenient processed foods instead of natural alternatives such as fresh fruits and veg Unaware of nutritional values and serving sizes hence will tend to consume less than recommended amount of fruits and veg Indifference towards healthy consumption due to their youth no (health) implications from eating unhealthy food when young do not think of future implications when old
Purpose of activity is to get tertiary students to consume more fruits and veg.Currently, nutritional data is poorly organized. Hence, it prevents users from using the data effectively towards their own benefit. Also, students frequently face time pressures (e.g. rushing for classes, doing projects), hence meals are usually taken in a hurry and not given much thought.
PhysicalNutritional data not easily available in a suitable representationSocialPeer pressure Group settings reinforce and influence individual’s unhealthy food habitsCultural- Singapore has a wide variety of local food, such as char kuayteow, but there is a lack of nutritional info for such food- Current methods of transmitting health knowledge are not interesting enough to engage youths
Our proposed solution isNutton- a device with an intuitive gestural interface. It is feasible as gestural interfaces already exist. An example would be Microsoft Surface in this picture which is an interactive tabletop.
Our device is about the size of a small badge. The camera will take images of food which will then be processed and then, relevant nutritional data will be shown through the projector. There is also a microphone and speaker to enable audio input/output so that there will be a multimodal experience. At the back, there is a pin to attach the device to clothes or bags.
The process of using our device is shown here.First, the camera will scan the food and display the relevant nutritional data. Then, the user can interact with the interface projected.*30-40 sec presentation of the interface shown after this slide
One strength of our device is that it is affordable. Its initial cost is around $300, which is affordable as compared to a similar device such as the iPhone. The large screen size allows users of a wide range of mobility and visibility capabilities to use the device. Also, its small size makes it portable while the intuitive gestural interface makes it user-friendly so that our device can be an “on-the-go” kind of gadget that fits in seamlessly with the hectic lives of tertiary students. The combining of auditory and visual aspects enhances the interactivity of the device. Nutritional data is arranged in a way that allows users to easily interpret the data and hence enable them to make use of the data and take action for their own benefit.Together, these strengths changes users from passive receivers of information into active users in pursuit of healthier consumption habits and a healthier lifestyle.
However, despite its various strengths, our research and experiments have shown us some shortcomings that we like to ask you for your feedback.Firstly, would increasing your awareness of nutrition change your consumption behaviour?Secondly, is this technology acceptable within your daily social context?
