In the first Zpryme/Fierce Smart Grid Index (SGI*) online poll 79 percent of Smart Grid executives feel that Smart Grid technologies could have helped utilities impacted by Hurricane Sandy restore power faster. The poll was taken on November 1st and November 2nd this week. The SGI conducted with 186 Smart Grid executives on Thursday, November 1 through Friday, November 2 asked, given the massive damage and power outages caused by the storm (Sandy) that just hit the Northeast United States, do you think that Smart Grid technologies could have helped utilities restore power faster had they been fully deployed (in transmission and distribution systems)? A notably significant 79 percent of executives responded “yes”, 21 percent “no.” This timely feedback from decision makers across the energy ecosystem underpins the need for a smarter grid. The extensive disturbance to electricity from Hurricane Sandy raises questions over whether the Smart Grid could make the current U.S. grid more resilient. Rewind a couple days, 8:00 pm EDT October 29, the National Hurricane Center reported Sandy made landfall near Atlantic City, NJ as a post tropical cyclone. The storm has brought heavy rain, winds, and snow in higher elevations to the Mid-Atlantic, Northeast, and portions of Midwest U.S. From the storm with new information from the DOE, Zpryme compiled five days of data across U.S. states that have been affected by the hurricane. Carbon Capture and Sequestration (CCS) is the process by which carbon dioxide is captured from coal fired power plants and stored in either underground, offshore (below the ocean bed) or in mineral deposits, thus preventing it from being released into the air. The process involves three stages: (1) capture of CO2 at point sources (such as power plants) and compression of the gas, (2) transportation through pipelines and (3) sequestration (geological, marine, or mineral). Although long-term costs associated with CCS may be cost-competitive (as indicated in the chart it Part 2), within each part of the process, different technologies exist with varying costs based on their level of development and maturity, elaborated below. CCS is an emerging technology which has still uncertain costs. While feasibility studies and pilot projects have been undertaken, large-scale commercial demonstration projects have not yet been carried out, although some are in planning stages. Cost uncertainty also exists around site-specific variability.

2011 has been touted as “the year of the plug-in electric vehicle”. With domestic fuel prices up 30 percent since last year, drivers are feeling pain at the pumps. Automakers have heard the cries of American wallets and have delivered a fleet of plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs). The Nissan Leaf and Chevy Volt are the first in a new generation of PEVs. The Leaf, a full PEV, runs entirely on a battery powered by the electric grid. The Volt is a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) that runs on a grid powered battery but also has a conventional engine fueled by gasoline. The Volt can travel between 20-50 miles on a single charge while the Leaf can travel over 100 miles. Regardless of a driver’s selection, the charging costs of both vehicles are less per mile than gasoline or diesel – approximately three cents per mile for EVs versus 12 cents per mile for conventional engines.
