6. The boards are buried in holes roughly
a foot deep dug along jungle trails
used by the Maoists in their jungle
strongholds. Troopers stumbling into
these traps find rusted nails slicing
through the rubber soles of their light
jungle shoes, and through muscle and
ligaments of their feet.
Method of placing Spikes
7. Reason for placing Spikes
1) To make harm to security forces.
2) To engage maximum security force
personnel in handling the injured personnel.
3) To make fear among the troops.
4) To immobilize and slow down the
operations.
5) Nail board traps offer a far cheaper and
plentiful solution for impeding the security
forces.
8. When Naxals are placing spikes and possible
places of planting Spikes
“ Naxals are planting spikes during rainy
season, when other method of attacks
like blasting IEDs are not possible over
security forces due to wet land /chances
of expose of IED places”.
9. The following are the possible places were spikes can be
planted:-
1) On regular routes of movements of troops
2) On jungle foot paths
3) Under trees
4) On the banks of river/nallas/hills
5) Near water points
6) On wet grounds
7) On dry plain ground
8) Among thick vegetation /jungles

1) Slow down the movement of security forces
2) Making harm to security force personnel
3) Making fear among security force personnel
4) Making harassment to security forces
5) Distract/ disturb the operations
20. Prevention of spike incidents
1) Frequent change of entry and exit operational
routes
2) During routine operational duties, like ROP & AD
duties, ensure to change the movement routs and
halting places frequently.
3) During operations, avoid predictable movements
and ensure cross country march.
4) Conducting operations in the same area on same
pattern creates casualness among troops. It should
be avoided. All operations must be treated as
special operation.
5) Effective use of DSMD
23. First aid after spike injury
1) Remove the object if you can-
If the object that caused the injury is small and you can
easily remove it, do so.
2) Stop the Bleeding-
Apply firm, direct pressure with sterile gauze or clean
cloth until bleeding stops.
3) Clean and Protect the Wound-
• Rinse the wound under clean water for several
minutes. Then wash the area with mild soap and water
and rinse again.
24. • Apply an antibiotic cream.
• Use a sterile bandage to protect the puncture wound from
dirt or further injury.
4) Treat Pain-
For pain, give ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, Nuprin)
or acetaminophen (Panadol, Tylenol). Check with the
doctor first, though, if you have any medical conditions or
take any other medicines.
5) Follow-up-
• See a healthcare provider for any signs of infection:
redness, increasing pain, swelling, or pus at the site.
• Ask the healthcare provider if a tetanus shot is needed.
• Some wounds may need antibiotics.
