1. ALGOPROG.KZ is an educational social network which is a platform for students and IT professionals to compete, learn and communicate to each other through on-line contests, trainings, posting of articles and solution analyzes, various discussions. 2. Educational Newtworking in IT Educational Networking ― is the use of social networking technologies for educational purposes. Today Kazakhstan needs social networks that are focused or devoted to some subject, rather than such global social networks as Facebook.
3. Algoprog.kz ALGOPROG.KZ – is an educational network devoted to IT, especially to programming and development.
4. Task of Algoprog.kz Bring together all school and university students, as well as IT professionals, to form a community or some kind of network where the users can communicate, learn, share and challenge themselves.
5. Functionality Programming contests – users can compete in on-line programming contests, that are announced beforehand and are held at some specific time.
7. Functionality Blogs (articles) – users can post articles, share their knowledge and thus express themselves and contribute to the community. Problem analyzes – users can post analyzes of problems, which might be a hint and help for other users. Question-answer (pingpong) – users can ask questions and answer the questions asked by other users.
8. Functionality Private messaging – users can send private messages to each other. Friends – users can have friends, they can follow each other, can see friends activities, leave messages on the wall and etc. Statuses (cross-post with twitter) – each user can update his status to make others see what he is doing at the moment. Algoprog's statuses can be cross-posted to well-known twitter.
9. Functionality Source-code view – users can view source code (solutions) of other users, if they already solved the problem. Ratings – for the now there are two types of ratings. Author rating which is earned by the number of votes on content written and coder rating which calculated by the sum of difficulties of solved problems. Voting, threaded-comments – users can vote on almost all content on the site, in such way provide another mark of quality. Also almost all content can be discussed. Every discussion is threaded.
10. Realization Project was realized by use of open-source web-framework django and judging system eJudge. Initial version was released at 1 October 2009.
11. What is done? - fully functional web site released, available at algoprog.kz - 24 on-line contests held - ~700 users registered - 160 problems available in archive
12. Actuality - gives opportunity to students that stay away from IT hubs of KZ. - specifics of IT education demands practice and communication - place where IT companies can search for local young bright minds.
13. Novelty - There is nothing new about social networks. The new thing is the way we use them. - we are mostly focused on personalities, rather than on content. - there is no such judging sites in KZ, and there is almost no such projects in the world. -the project will not make people wiser, but the community, the need for self-expression, and eagerness to become of highest level IT professional will motivate members to learn more and do more.
14. Social Networks? 1. 96 % of students report that they ever used any social networking technologies. Why? 2. Most common topics of conversation on the social networking scene is education.
15. Do we need our own EN? 1. Information is not so fragmented. 2. Communicate with members in native language. 3. Express yourself and get connections with local confederates. 4. Gives chance to students from all over the country to communicate on the same level.
16. What is next? - There are many ideas waiting to be realized. - There is a lot to improve and a lot to be detailized. - Depending on the growth of community, we will try to create challanges not only for algorithmic programmers, but also for software developers and maybe some other stuff.
