概要： 算盤（そろばん）を用いた数値計算，すなわち「珠算」は，「珠」を用いた数値表現を理解した上で，複数の方法・順序により「珠」を操作しなければならず，その習得には長期に渡る繰り返し学習を要する．しかしながら，珠算指導は学習者の観察に基づきミスや苦手な珠操作を発見・指導する形式が主となっており，人手に頼るほかないのが現状である．そこで本研究では，一般的な算盤を用いる珠算学習を対象としたICTによる学習支援を実現するため，書画カメラによって取得した画像認識に基づく算盤上の入力値推定手法を提案する．評価実験の結果，算盤上に入力された7桁の数値に対し正解率95.0%での推定が可能であることを確認した．
Abstract: Numerical calculation using an abacus requires an understanding of numerical expressions using the beads of the abacus and manipulating beads in multiple ways and in different orders. To acquire the skill of using the abacus, it is usually required a long period of repeated learning. However, the teaching of the abacus is mainly in the form of finding errors and poor bead operations and teaching them based on the observation of learners, and there is no other way but to rely on human labor at this moment. In this study, in order to realize an ICT-based learning support system of arithmetic with a common abacus, we propose a method of estimating input values on an abacus based on image recognition captured by a document camera. Through the evaluation experiments, we have confirmed that the proposed method showed an accuracy of 95.0% in the estimation of 7-digit number input on an abacus.

防犯意識の向上に伴い，歩行者向けナビゲーションにおいても夜道の明るさなどの「安心・安全面」の情報整備が重要となるため，本研究ではスマートフォン搭載照度センサを用いて街灯照度を収集，集合知を形成することによる，夜道の安全判定手法を検討している．本稿では，事前調査により同機種端末間においても照度センサ特性には差異があることが明らかとなった．そこで，街灯周辺を歩行した際の照度測定値の波形形状を比較，波形のフィッティングを行うことで，センサ特性が既知であるデバイスを校正基準とした相対的な照度測定値校正手法について提案する．検証の結果，照度測定値校正手法では約90[%]の街灯において街灯種に依らずセンサ特性の差異を削減でき，また，街灯照度推定では高照度・広照射範囲を有する街灯における照度推定精度が向上した．

多数のセンサを搭載したスマートフォンの普及により，位置情報を用いたアプリケーションの需要が高まっている．中でも歩行者向けナビゲーションでは，従来の経路決定要素に加えて，夜道の明るさなどの「安心・安全面」に関する情報を考慮することが求められる．歩道の安全性を街灯の照度に基づき可視化する取組みは，大学，各自治体等によって実施されているが，安全性判定に必要な街灯の照度測定に掛かるコストや手間などから，網羅的な照度収集の実施が困難であることが問題となっている． そこで本研究では，スマートフォン搭載照度センサを用いて街灯の照度データを収集，集合知を形成することにより，網羅的な照度収集および夜道の安全性判定を行うシステムを検討している．なお，スマートフォン搭載照度センサは，入射角特性および照度追従特性といった入光特性をもつため，これらの特性を考慮した照度補正を行い，JIS照度測定法に基づく街灯の照度値を推定する手法，および夜道の安全性判定手法を提案し，検証を行った． 検証の結果，平均水平面照度に対して限定すると，平均誤差は 0.571 lx となり，また安全性判定は 85% と高い適合率を得ることができた．

近年，防犯意識の向上に伴い，夜道の明るさなどの「安心・安全面」での情報整備が歩行者向けナビゲーションにおいて重要となってきている．安心・安全情報については，企業や自治体，警察署などが独自に提供しているものの，情報の「明快さ」や「網羅性」が十分に達成されているとはいえない．本研究では，スマートフォンに搭載されている照度センサを用いて，街灯照度データを収集，集合知を形成することにより，安心・安全情報のうち「夜道の明るさ」を地図に付加するシステムの開発を行っている．本稿では，上記の課題のうち，情報整備の「網羅性」を解決するために，スマートフォン搭載照度センサの特性に基づいた街灯設置地点推定および街灯照度推定を行う手法を提案し，各手法について検証を行った．検証の結果，街灯位置推定手法における再現率は，事前調査の対象とした街灯については100[%]，全サンプルの街灯については約89[%]となった．また，街灯と推定点の平均絶対誤差は全サンプルの街灯について約1.97[m]となった．街灯照度推定手法における平均誤差率は事前調査の対象とした街灯については約17[%]，全サンプルの街灯については約31[%]となった．

From Natural Language to Structured Solr Queries using LLMs
This talk draws on experimentation to enable AI applications with Solr. One important use case is to use AI for better accessibility and discoverability of the data: while User eXperience techniques, lexical search improvements, and data harmonization can take organizations to a good level of accessibility, a structural (or “cognitive” gap) remains between the data user needs and the data producer constraints.
That is where AI – and most importantly, Natural Language Processing and Large Language Model techniques – could make a difference. This natural language, conversational engine could facilitate access and usage of the data leveraging the semantics of any data source.
The objective of the presentation is to propose a technical approach and a way forward to achieve this goal.
The key concept is to enable users to express their search queries in natural language, which the LLM then enriches, interprets, and translates into structured queries based on the Solr index’s metadata.
This approach leverages the LLM’s ability to understand the nuances of natural language and the structure of documents within Apache Solr.
The LLM acts as an intermediary agent, offering a transparent experience to users automatically and potentially uncovering relevant documents that conventional search methods might overlook. The presentation will include the results of this experimental work, lessons learned, best practices, and the scope of future work that should improve the approach and make it production-ready.

How Race, Age and Gender Shape Attitudes Towards Mental Health
Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

From Natural Language to Structured Solr Queries using LLMs
This talk draws on experimentation to enable AI applications with Solr. One important use case is to use AI for better accessibility and discoverability of the data: while User eXperience techniques, lexical search improvements, and data harmonization can take organizations to a good level of accessibility, a structural (or “cognitive” gap) remains between the data user needs and the data producer constraints.
That is where AI – and most importantly, Natural Language Processing and Large Language Model techniques – could make a difference. This natural language, conversational engine could facilitate access and usage of the data leveraging the semantics of any data source.
The objective of the presentation is to propose a technical approach and a way forward to achieve this goal.
The key concept is to enable users to express their search queries in natural language, which the LLM then enriches, interprets, and translates into structured queries based on the Solr index’s metadata.
This approach leverages the LLM’s ability to understand the nuances of natural language and the structure of documents within Apache Solr.
The LLM acts as an intermediary agent, offering a transparent experience to users automatically and potentially uncovering relevant documents that conventional search methods might overlook. The presentation will include the results of this experimental work, lessons learned, best practices, and the scope of future work that should improve the approach and make it production-ready.
