The Battle Of Lexington And Concord
"By the rude bridge that arched the flood, their flag to April's breeze unfurled, here once the embattled farmers stood, and fired the shot heard round
the world..." primary source Ralph Waldo Emerson's poem "Concord Hymn" was written about the Battle of Lexington and Concord. Although this
poem is not a good answer on who shot first during this battle, it does open the idea about the battle itself and makes you think who shot first. I believe
that the Americans shot first at this Battle.
What happened at the Battle of Lexington and Concord? Though it has been called a battle, it was more of a skirmish. It happened on April 19th the
year 1775 in Middlesex Country, province of Massachusetts Bay during the American Revolution. The British were marching to Concord because of
the arms depot of the Americans. The Americans were out–numbered, out–gunned, and not as well trained at the British soldiers. On the side of the
road there were 40 to 100 speculators of this event. When the British arrived one of the officers rode forward waving his sword and called out to the
militia to disperse and go home, as well as telling them "Lay down your arms, you damned rebels!" But the Americans did not lay down their arms so
the British commander Major John Pitcairn told his men to hold fire as did the Americans leader, Captain John Parker, who was a veteran from the
French and Indian War (1754–1763). But, a shot was fired from an unknown source. By the end of the fight eight militia men lay

Did Thomas Jefferson Abandon His Ethics for the Lousiana...
Did Thomas Jefferson give up his deeply held political values in order to purchase the Louisiana Territory from the French (P. 2)? This is the major
question that has led to much debate within the early history of America (P. 1). Some historians argue that Thomas Jefferson did, in fact, throw away
his commitment to states' rights and constructionism by the large purchase of Louisiana for the U.S. (P.1). On the other hand, some believe that
President Jefferson supported his political beliefs, the fortification of the republican government, with the Louisiana Purchase (P. 1).

13). In "When the Ends Justify the Means," Barry J. Balleck debates that President Jefferson did not abandon his political ethics by purchasing the
Louisiana Territory (P. 14). Balleck states that the Louisiana Purchase was "the greatest achievement of Thomas Jefferson's presidency" (P. 14). With
the addition of the new territory to the United States, President Jefferson secured the nation "for generations, if not centuries to come" (P. 14). Jefferson
was confident that purchasing the Louisiana Territory would encourage the development of an upright Republican populace (P. 14). Surprisingly, he
had many reservations about his authority to purchase Louisiana, but that did not stop him from laying the treaty before Congress (P. 19). He also
knew that, by purchasing Louisiana, the Federalists power might be lost, but he still pushed forward with the treaty (P. 19). Although many historians
criticize President Jefferson for giving up his most visible political convictions by purchasing Louisiana, he knew that it would double the size of the
United States and ensure much land expansion for the country (P. 20). He strongly believed that the new territory was "essential to national security"
(P. 21). In President Jefferson's mind, purchasing Louisiana secured the "virtues of Republicanism in an 'Empire of Liberty'" (P. 22). "The Louisiana

Before The Enlightenment : A Traditional Social Structure...
Christine Dito Mr. Martin World History–Block 1 18 November 2014 Title Before the Enlightenment, every law and every decision was made and
accepted, only by the King. There was a traditional social structure consisting of the monarchy on the top, followed by the nobles and clergy, and
then all of the lower class on the bottom, which included peasants, merchants, and craftsman. When the people of the Western a Society began to
receive ideas from Enlightenment scholars and thinkers, the began to realize how wrong the ways of the King were. They began to revolt against
and disagree with these ways of the King. These people, motivated by the ideas of the Enlightenment, challenged the traditional social and political
structures of the Western society to eventually lead to human rights for everyone. Prior to the Enlightenment, the rules, laws, and social structures
were set in stone, relying on the Kings and Queens to make all decisions and declare rights for them, even if they were completely unfair. People of
this time argued that, "Royal power is sacred, and nothing is more firmly grounded in the Word of God than the obedience due, as a matter of faith and
conscience, to lawful authority...the prince [is] one to whom obedience [is] due without exception."(Bossuet Doc. 4). They believed that God wishes

The State Of Nature Is An Important And Relevant...
Erich Harkema
Prof. Wolfe
10/1/14
Intro: The state of nature is an important and relevant philosophical idea that has been discussed and debated for a long time. The reason it is such a
key topic in philosophy is it delves into the reasoning behind why man had to create political society. In order to properly understand the philosophy of
the state of nature it is important to look at conflicting viewpoints about it in order to understand it with less bias. Thomas Hobbes and Jean Jacques
Rosseau both have differing viewpoints regarding the state of nature. Hobbes feels that man's natural state is cowardly, fearful, almost paranoid, so
man created political society in order to protect himself. Rosseau, on the other hand, feels that man was much happier before political society was
created. Their viewpoints differ regarding the state of nature, man's phase after leasing their state of nature, and the basis and legitimacy of the social
contract.
Hobbes' and Rousseau's views on man's state of nature are quite different. Hobbes feels that man is naturally brutish, and constantly in a state of
misery due to the fact that everyone else is your adversary and may act as they see fit. Due to this natural state, anyone could simply kill you in your
sleep, like the coward that they naturally are. Hobbes felt that because man did not understand good and evil, man responds with violence or panic:
"Hobbes maintains that man is naturally intrepid and seeks only to attack and fight...And

Thomas Hobbes And John Locke On Liberty
In this essay, the contrasting ideas of Thomas Hobbes and John Locke on liberty will be discussed and critically analyzed.
Freedom is the idea of being able to do what one wants to, however, in a society, laws are created to make us all equal. Laws apply to every one of us
in a civilized democratic society, which is the common voice that keeps us living together without violating each other's rights.– Author's general view.7
Thomas Hobbes primarily expresses the idea of liberty using sovereignty as a model. According to him, sovereignty was established by agreement
initially, but he goes on to say that sovereignty established by force incorporates the same rights and requirements of the social contract. The difference
lies in the way the sovereign is retained, installed and thought of. A sovereign coming into power by universal consent is supported by the masses, as
people fear each other. In contrast to this, a sovereign that comes into power by force gains support as the people fear the sovereign himself. Both of
these sovereigns are mutually consented to by social contract, which is driven by fear in either case. In the state of nature, liberty was non–existent as
actions were influenced by fear of death and fear of the power held by others. While fear and power are present in The Leviathan, the person has
acquired absolute liberty as he handed over fear and power to the sovereign to use as tools consentingly making him responsible for his own fate
should the sovereign

The Influence of Locke and Hobbes on Government
Thomas Hobbes and John Locke have authored two works that have had a significant impact on political philosophy. In the "Leviathan" by Hobbes and
"Two Treatises of Government" by Locke, the primary focus was to analyze human nature to determine the most suitable type of government for
humankind. They will have confounding results. Hobbes concluded that an unlimited sovereign is the only option, and would offer the most for the
people, while for Locke such an idea was without merit. He believed that the government should be limited, ruling under the law, with divided powers,
and with continued support from its citizens. With this paper I will argue that Locke had a more realistic approach to identifying the human
characteristics that... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This absolute Sovereign will gain power when the citizens have given up the entirety of their rights to this new authority and agreeing to a covenant.
This is considered a rational action, and is the only option for the body of people to smoothly come together. When that happens, an organized society
forms, in which the consequences of not adhering to the rules and regulations of the covenant will be so severe, that no one would attempt to violate
this contract and disobey the Sovereign. That can happen since first, the Sovereign has deadly force and is permitted to use it whenever he or she likes,
and, second, the citizens have parted away with all their rights, and cannot protect themselves from this Sovereign. That fact creates a fearful, and
therefore, obedient society. This limitless Sovereign is justified, based on information from the "Leviathan." As we can infer from Hobbes' views on
human nature, people will always act selfishly and in an evil manner to obtain the things that they want. As a result, for people to contract into a
peaceful society that will have what they want and need readily available, they must be bound by force. If this distrustful group of people had an
inclination that the governing authority was weak, they would overturn it, fatefully returning them to the state of nature. Additionally, this absolute
monarchy is considered warranted, according to

While in office his primary goal was to undo the federal institutions created by the Constitution of the United States. He wanted to cease the political

blockades in the Atlantic and Caribbean Ocean. The act forced to close American ports and exports to foreign countries. According to Ellis he anxiously

Social Contract : The Blend Of Government And Freedom
Rousseau Social Contract; the Blend of Government and Freedom Elise Rozenberg Survey of Modern History I July 13, 2015 "Daring ideas are like
chessmen moved forward; they may be beaten, but they may start a winning game."[ ] These words can be applied to the progression of history.
Throughout history, there have been many radical thinkers whose ideas, though initially criticized, have become the catalyst of great change. Though,
the radical thinkers were met with the criticism and disdain of the people, eventually, their ideas slowly impacted society. The Enlightenment was one
of the greatest time periods in history where many ideas and philosophies greatly influenced history as we know it. The Enlightenment was an
intellectual movement that questioned the aspects of the absolutist regime of monarchs such as King Louis 14 of France, and strongly challenged the
religious beliefs. In years prior to the Enlightenment, the people sought out answers from positions of authority, such as the church or monarchy. The
Enlightenment emphasized an alternative, the use of reason to seek answers. With the emphasis on reason came many social and political philosophies
that challenged the preconceived notion of divine right of the monarchy. Many enlightened thinkers, or philosophes, wrote about the natural rights of
people and the role of government in society.[ ] From the Renaissance Era through the Scientific Revolution, the Church had slowly lost their influence

The Laws Should And Should Not Be Place
Law is fluid. This statement can be interpreted in a number of ways with no exact answer. One can construe it as law being ever changing or law
varying from place to place. The fluidity of law is very clearly illustrated in the assorted judgments of law itself. In particular, many are strongly
opinionated regarding which laws should and should not be place. St. Thomas Aquinas, a traditional law theorist, raised many questions concerning law
as he had substantial sentiments around law. He combined the philosophy of Aristotle and Christian geology to create the Traditional Natural Law
Theory. Aquinas defines law as "nothing else than an ordinance of reason for the common good, made by him who has care of the community and
promulgated" ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Similar to so, Aquinas declares that a law is unjust laws if it is contrary to human good and again, opposed to divine good. Additionally, just laws are
the foundation to acquiring virtue. As Aquinas's claim will be elucidated and objected, one will be clear to conclude that Aquinas speaks of the truth.
There are different characteristics that create a law. In the light, there are a number of characteristics that determine if the law is just. Aquinas
strongly imposes that all laws must be just. If not just, then they are invalid, unnatural, and perceived as "a perversion of law" (Aquinas in Dimock,
ed., 2002, p.20). Aquinas states that "every human law has just so much of the nature of law as it is derived from the law of nature" (Aquinas in
Dimock, ed., 2002, p.20). The essence of natural law is to elude evil and achieve good. It is an outlet of eternal law, the legislator being God, in which
He commands Nature. Natural law applies only to rational creatures, as opposed to eternal law which applies to nature as a whole. Naturally, the pursuit
of good among humans come in accordance with natural inclinations that is obtained as living creatures, animals, and rational thinking. Man strives for
self–preservation, procreation, and the pursuit of knowledge. With the nature of humans, and nature of natural law, it is manifestly an ordinance of

Is Gun Control The Answer?
Is Gun Control The Answer?
The Second Amendment of the United States Constitution:
A well–regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed. This
amendment, a part of the constitution known as the Bill of Rights, describes the protection of the right people to possess whatever arms they wish.
The limits of this bill are fiercely debated among pro–gun and anti–gun supporters, as well as debates within each faction. Those who choose violence
to advance their political, philosophical or theological ideals do not concern themselves with a vote tally.
In the 1980's a "mental illness" was removes from the list of 26 identifiable mental illnesses. The American Psychiatric Association, the organization
responsible for mental classification, is the apex of subjectivity. They are responsible for arbitrarily adding or subtracting a lifestyle from a list of
mental illnesses. They are also the organization that will determine who is mentally capable of owning a gun. Through comparisons made between
Switzerland and Chicago, more evidence points to the problem being the people and not the tool or gun they choose to use. (Vargas, 2014). Gun
Control is not efficient as it has not shown to reduce the amount of gun–related crimes.
The examples of terrorist attacks that do not include the shooting of a gun are numerous and are often more devastating to the regions or

The Contributions Of Thomas Jefferson
Our country was made upon the most rebellious, intelligent, and competent individuals who saw the wrongdoings in their authoritative enforcers;
however, there was a red–haired Virginian who was less than intimidating yet more literate and educated; he was credited for driving the nail in our
retaliation against Britain's lack of representation against the colonists. This man's name was Thomas Jefferson, a historical figure who wasn't expected
to accomplish much based on his modesty; however, he achieved so many successful pursuits in which the most notable contributions will be included
in the following main points: His general background/upbringings which allowed him to gain success, his most notable contributions to the United
States, and how those contributions were and still are significant. All these milestones obliged me to choose him as one of my favorite founding
fathers. Along with relevance and key structure, Thomas Jefferson's background will be discussed chronologically within different main points instead
of being consolidate within a single paragraph. (History Channel) To start, Thomas Jefferson's development allowed him to have a successful future. It
all started April 13, 1743 in a simple farmhouse around the vicinity of Shadwell, Virginia. Newborn Thomas took his first breath in the Jefferson home

Hobbes, Marx, and Shah
The cold, calculating, and logical brains of Enlightenment thinkers are much different from the emotional, fantasy–loving mind of Romantics. The
Enlightenment was an 18th century movement in which rationality and science were placed as the number one things a human could have (Brians).
The Enlightenment also propagated the idea equality and liberalism (Brians). Romanticism was an international movement which occurred after the
Enlightenment during the late 1700s to the mid–1800s (Melani). It placed emotions at the forefront of human thought (Melani). Thomas Hobbes, a very
early Enlightenment thinker, has a variety of ideas which do not coincide with those of Karl Marx, an early Romantic.

Therefore, when Hobbes speaks of a state of nature, he is speaking of a state without a governing body. In the natural state, "Every man was
continually engaged in a war against all other men ("bellum universale")" ("The Philosophy of Thomas Hobbes") in an effort to gain power ("Thomas
Hobbes"). In Hobbes's natural state, all men are equal insofar that each man is able to kill every other man, be it through sheer force, cunning, or
by joining his power with others against a stronger foe (Williams). This "equality" leads Hobbes to claim that "there is no natural source of
authority to order [men's] lives together," (Williams). Also in Hobbes's bellum universale, "'nothing can be unjust. The notions of right and wrong,
justice and injustice have no place [in the state of nature],'" (Williams). The combination of Hobbesian equality and lack of a universal moral system
allow there for no agreed authority to decide if anyone's actions are allowable or not. Unless "people share the same moral ideas...at the level of
individual judgment," (Williams), no conclusion may be arrived at. However, identical moral ideas for each and every judgment on each and every
person are possible when political authority exists.
In a Hobbesian society, all men (except the chosen ruler or ruling body), agree to give up or limit their rights (especially the singular right of nature) in
order to create a "social contract" which

Comparing Hobbe's and Locke's Theories on Nature
Two books that I am going to be drawing information from for my paper are Hobbes' "Leviathan" and Locke's "Two Treatises of Government." This
essay will be focusing on the differences between Hobbes' and Locke's ideas on the state of nature. One of the biggest, and in my opinion most
important points that makes Hobbes different from Locke is his belief that the state of nature is equal to the state of war.Thomas Hobbes was an English
philosopher, who lived between 1588 and 1679. He witnessed multiple events throughout his life that later led him to write his book "Leviathan," in
1651 once the war had ended. Hobbes witnessed the English Civil War (1642–1651), the interregnum period of England starting in 1649, and the

(Hobbes PAGE NUMBER)"
After that Hobbes goes on to say, "The life of man is solitary, poore, nasty, brutish, and short." (Hobbes) He argues that nothing is unjust in the state of
nature. He believes that everyone has the right to do anything he/she wants because in the state of nature, there is no right or wrong and there is no
law; everyone can do everything and nothing can be unjust. He says that " Where there is no common power, no law; where no law, no injustice."
(Hobbes)
So all in all with Hobbes, he believes that all people are equal, therefore no power over the others in the state can be established. Everyone is the
enemy to everyone else, therefore, no on can secure himself/herself, there is no property, and nothing is unjust. So overall, Hobbes state of nature is
very pessimistic and is not a place to survive.
Locke's idea of the state of nature is that everyone is equal to everyone. He states that, "the state of nature is also the state of equality, wherein all the
power and jurisdiction is reciprocal, no one having more than another.." (Locke) Locke however, does not think that this leads the people to war. He
thinks that the state of nature is NOT equal to the state of war, but there is a chance of it becoming the state of war. He says that the person who
committed the crime against a certain person puts himself in the state of war with that

Hobbes And The State Of Nature
1.According to Hobbes the state of nature leads to a war of all against all. What Hobbes refers to when he discusses the state of nature is a state in
which there are no civil powers. To reach his conclusion about how the world would be in the state of nature, Hobbes first explains what human nature
is and then explains the relationship between man and civil government.
As Hobbes sees it men are naturally in conflict. Hobbes sees three reasons for this. They are competition, diffidence, and glory. Following from the
right of nature, which states that all men have the liberty to promote their own life, men naturally desire to obtain resources so as to promote their
own life and obtain some form of the good. Yet there are only so many resources, and so men enter into conflict over competition of who will be able
to have the limited resources, since only one person can own each resource. .
Diffidence follows from this competition. Since all men are equal in terms of mind and body, meaning that any man could kill any other man, men
constantly feel threatened by other men. So, as a way promote their own self preservation, men seek out their enemies, which is every other person,
and attempt to get rid of the threat they possess rather than let themselves be harmed by the threat. So, men are proactive in defeating their enemies.
Finally, men enter into conflict via glory. Men value their honor and desire to be treated in a certain way. When this honor is damaged men lash out so

John Locke And Plato 's Views On Human Nature
Human Nature
Human nature or man's behavior in nature is a widely discussed topic in philosophy. Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, and Plato are among some of the
many philosophers that have covered this topic in detail. John Locke expressed a generous view of human behavior. He states, "All mankind... Being
all equal and independent no one ought to harm another in his life, health, liberty, or possessions. "1 . This quote refers to human nature, which is
heavily discussed by John Locke. Locke is not the only philosopher who shared his views on man's behavior in a state of nature, but others such as

The television series The Walking Dead is a show based in a post–apocalyptic world where the undead roam around feeding off the last known
survivors. This show is a perfect example of man in a state of nature since there are no more governments or formal civil authorities. In the series
people fight to survive against the elements, zombies, and other people. This leads to survivors joining together to form groups making their chances
of survival more likely. Rick Grimes is the main character in the series, he is the one who leads his group. Rick and his group face enemies along the
way whether it be disease, "walkers" (zombies), or other groups.
The television series The Walking Dead mostly tends to favor Thomas Hobbes views. The show portrays Hobbes' three reasons for violence quite
often in the show. Particularly when the Governor's group attacks Rick's group. The Governor attacks Rick's group for all of the three reasons that
Hobbes claims violence is used for. Invasion, the Governor tries to invade Rick's group primarily because he wants their home. The Governor wants
to take the prison that Rick's group resides in using violence. He attacks the prison with weapons and even using a tank, so that he can gain control
over Rick's territory, food, and even some of his people. On to the second reason for violence being safety. Using the same example in The Walking
Dead the Governor was attacking the prison so that he could have a safe haven for his

Discrimination : The American Association Of University Women
Throughout history, discrimination in all forms has been an endless battle; whether it 's race, gender, religion, beliefs, appearance or anything else that
makes one person different from another, it's happening every day. One significant discrimination problem the world population is combating, takes
place in the work field. Women, who are as equally trained and educated, and with the same experience as men are not getting equal pay, "The
American Association of University Women is releasing a new study that shows when men and women attend the same kind of college, pick the same
major and accept the same kind of job, on average, the woman will still earn 82 cents to every dollar that a man earns"(Coleman). This form of
discrimination dates back for centuries and derives from the common stereotype that since men provide for women and women take care of the home
and children, men consequently are more effective in the career chosen. In today's world, the realization that man and woman can produce the same
outcome, have the same education, and have the same capability to accomplish the same overall tasks as men is becoming more popular, especially
as the idea of women not being as valuable as a man is being proven wrong.
Women are almost half of the workforce. They are the equal, if not main, breadwinner in four out of ten families. They receive more college and
graduate degrees than men. Yet, on average, women continue to earn considerably less than men. According to the

The Louisiana Territory And How It Changed America Forever
The American landscape has always been that of great majestic glory. But this was not always so. The westward expansion was not always in the
cards for the Americans. The French had mostly settled from the Mississippi River in the east to the Rocky Mountains in the west and from the Gulf of
Mexico in the south to the Canadian border in the north. With the Louisiana Purchase the U.S acquired most of that land. How did this land help define
the United States of America as a Nation? This essay will discuss the actions leading up to the Acquirement of the Louisiana territory and how it
changed America forever.
In 1762 France ceded French Louisiana west of the Mississippi River to Spain. The French also transferred almost all of its remaining North American
holdings to Britain in 1763. Spain was no longer a dominant country and they did little to develop Louisiana during the next three decades in which
they held it. Spain in 1796 allied itself with France causing Britain in a bold move to use its navy to cut off the Spanish from reaching America.
The Spanish in 1801 signed in secret, a treaty with France to return Louisiana Territory to France. This set off a series of concerns for the
Americans. Americans had been moving westward into the Ohio River and Tennessee River valley areas since the 1780's and the Port of New Orleans
was a strategic port of entry as well as the Mississippi River which was needed if the U.S was going to be able to ship good through the Gulf of Mexico.

cultural and "not primarily ideological." It is this that I plan to expand on but not at the expense of explaining it in totally non–characteristic manner. To

History itself is a diachronic science and constructing a true historical record coincidentally begins its origins in the West. History starts in
Mesopotamia and Egypt then somehow works its way into Rome, then the text books, then the American psyche. It is this pattern, as opposed to the
historical record other countries keep, which Americans rely on. This goes side–by–side with the repetitive role Euro–centrism plays in defining our
origins and identity in society. Can an aggregation of narratives that help bridge the gap between empirical evidence that supports our origin as a
species honestly rule over this post–World War Two triumphant state we live in? Can the world converge, or are the shifting patterns of philosophy out
ruling this possibility? Our environment and technology serves as a back–drop to this triumphant society we familiarize with and here it is that one of
my "branches" from the political/social tree emerges: There is no diversity in our culture, only dominance – of all societies; this is how we are
"conditioned" to believe our origins are of the "Western" hemisphere. Can Carbon 14 accurately yield ideas as to when Megalithic structures were
erected? Is our ego–centrism a reaction to the condescending belief that we Americans have created an accurate enough history of the world, and have
tapped into the truth of our saga not in favor of ourselves?

The Pivotal Political Decisions On The Young American...
The pivotal political decisions in the young American republic of the late 18th century were made by a select few leaders. These forerunners knew
each other at a personal level, and their gregariousness had a remarkable impact on the choices they made in the future. In the words of an
accomplished historian and a biographer, Joseph Ellis, these crucial decisions with an astounding aftermath came about "in a sudden spasm of enforced
inspiration and makeshift construction" (3). In addition, in his new non–fiction erudite study, Founding Brothers: The Revolutionary Generation,
published in the year 2000, Ellis strives to illustrate how these decisions came about "in a sudden spasm of enforced inspiration and makeshift
construction during the final decades of the eighteenth century." (3). Thus, in order to distinguish between categorical truth and romantic fiction, Ellis
focuses primarily on the forerunners themselves, wishing to examine how their relationships resonated through political changes.
As an ardent historian, Joseph Ellis has written numerous books on the topic of American history. Some of his most famous include: Passionate Sage:
The Character and Legacy of John Adams and American Sphinx: The Character of Thomas Jefferson, which won the 1997 National Book Award. After
graduating from Yale University and the College of William and Mary, Ellis currently lives in Amherst, Massachusetts, with his wife, Ellen, and three
sons.

Modern vs. Ancient in Cyberspace
The Big Bang created the energy and matter to create the universe, and Bob Kahn and Vint Cerf invented TCP and IP which created the protocols that
built the internet. Without the aforementioned, technically cyberspace couldn't exist, but the fact that it does exist, it not only has physical components
in an electric, virtual world, but it can effectively become an intangible idea which is debated and analyzed. What makes the internet somewhat unique
is that it is an artificial alternative realm where we humans can think, speak, and act. We have unique lives on the internet and web. We can search for
info in an encyclopedia, post photos, stream music, start revolutions, buy drugs and weapons, and hack the pentagon, all through an electric system
connected to billions of other devices. Those who connect to the internet all bear liberty to act, in an almost state of nature way. Yet, you are subject to
the internet as soon as you are connected. Thus, based on the evolution of the Internet, certainly different political philosophers would have competing
visions, ancient versus modern, about its current state and how to handle political or governing policies moving forward.
To be able to properly analyze and apply political theories to a cyber–realm, we must understand that connecting to the internet is much like a social
contract. When you sign on the internet you are

The Nature Of People's Beliefs
Philosophy allows people to study the nature of people's beliefs. Throughout history people's beliefs have differed. At one time people may believe
one idea and decades later people may completely disagree with that idea. Not even the ideas of the law are exempt from this occurrence. Since the
spoken word, hundreds of philosophers have defined law in different ways. Seeing law in different ways people can come to different conclusions
about specific cases. The Fugitive Slave Law was a controversial law in American history. The Fugitive Slave Law allowed slave–owners to capture
their slaves who have fled north to free states. In United States v Morris, the emancipators challenged the Fugitive Slave Law in Boston. A group
of emancipators helped an escaped slave flee to Canada; the Fugitive Slave Law states helping an escaped slave is in violation of the law. In this
case, the jurors let the emancipators free for helping a slave escape slavery to Canada. Philosophy gives us the tools to analyze the legality of the
juror 's actions and answer the question "Did the jurors in Morris do the right thing?" Natural Law theory, Positivism, Legal Realism, Dworkin's
neo–natural law theory, and Butler's critical law theory all provide different outlooks to answering this question. All of these philopshers have differing
beliefs of the role of morality and law. However, these philosophies all conclude in the answer the jurors in Morris, in fact, did the right thing. The

James Monroe And The American Revolution
James Monroe, born in Westmoreland County, Virginia, to Spence Monroe and his wife Elizabeth Jones Monroe, was a very prominent man in
history. James Monroe was also a very ambitious man who would, at most times, be a potential rival to many of his close companions in the
presidential elections. He was the seventh Secretary of State, served as a member of the Congress of the Confederation, served as a U.S. Senator,
served as the governor of Virginia, and was the fifth U.S. president. Monroe also served as the Secretary of War during the War of 1812.James Monroe
was very active in the American Revolution, and, even later after the war was over, he was very active in politics. He traveled many times often to
foreign countries dealing with affairs concerning various treaties to help keep the peace between countries or expand countries. James Monroe was
born on April 28, in 1758 to Spence Monroe and his wife Elizabeth Jones Monroe. Spence Monroe was a prosperous planter who also practice
carpentry. James Monroe 's mother was of Welsh heritage, and his father 's ancestry could be traced to a relative who fought in the English Civil Wars
alongside Charles I. This relative was later captured and exiled to Virginia from England. James Monroe was homeschooled with his other siblings by
his mother until the age of eleven. After he was homeschooled, Monroe attended Campbell Town Academy, which was run by Reverend Archibald

Frederick Douglass, An American Slave
Frederick Douglass is well known for many of his literary achievements. He is best known, now, as a writer. "As a writer, Frederick Douglass
shined. As a speaker, he was the best. There was no abolitionist, black or white, that was more for his speaking skills." (McFeely, 206) "So
impressive were Frederick Douglass's oratorical and intellectual abilities that opponents refused to believe that he had been a slave and alleged
that he was a impostor brought up on the public by the abolitionists. In reply, Douglass wrote Narrative Of The Life Of Frederick Douglass, An
American Slave (1845), which he revised in later years: in final form, it appeared in 1882 under the title Life and Times Of Frederick Douglass."
(Graves, 52 ) Frederick's oratory skills left the largest impact on Civil War time period literature. Douglass's most significant autobiographical
works include: Narrative Of The Life Of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave: My Bondage And My Freedom: and Life And Times Of Frederick
Douglass. These three books are about the same person, and share a similar message, but are written by Frederick at different times of his life,
looking at the past in different ways. In Narrative Of The Life Of Frederick Douglass, Douglass used a simple, yet educated way to show how he felt
as a slave growing up in Maryland. He describes in the Narrative "I have often been so pinched with hunger as to dispute with old "Nep," the dog, for

Features Of Metaphysical Poetry
The first invention of the term "Metaphysical Poetry" by Samuel John as he pertained to the group of writers in the beginning of the 17th century
continues to give an impertinent impression for this kind of works were made by men of high intellect. Presenting new ideas and marveling through the
art of conceit, imagery, and allusion surprises every reader and challenges them to the wonders of the poet's learning. The metaphysical poets are the
known writers for their originality. They were all unique and original both in their thoughts and ideas. Instead of following the path of the
contemporary poets, they differentiated themselves in an unseen style of writing before them. Because of this, they were known as the original poets
of the English Literature. There are classified major poets who lived during 1500 – 1799. They are John Donne, George Herbert, Richard Crashaw,
Abraham Cowley, Henry Vaughan, Saint Robert Southwell, Thomas Traherne and Andrew Marvell. These are the well known metaphysical poets of
all time, but there are also lesser known poets and considered metaphysical poets like Anne Bradstreet, George Chapman, Thomas Carew, Richard

Elliot, another characteristic of this poetry is the "Unified Sensibility". It implies the interrelationship or a combination of human thoughts and feelings.
It delineates itself to some poetry works in which the beauty of poetry only lies in the reason and judgment of the writer rather than the person's
feelings. That in the age of Pope, poets creates their work purely with the use of their intellect and not with their emotions and feelings. With this the
"Unification of Sensibility" became the imperative feature of metaphysical poetry. And since the metaphysical poets did not disassociated feelings and
reason from one another, it indicated a more "spiritual and physical", "ethereal and earthly" "abstract and concrete" ideas and

Chapter 1:
Chapter 1 focused on introducing two politicians that were about to have a duel on July 11, 1804. Aaron Burr was the third vice president of the
United States and the vice president during Thomas Jefferson's term. Alexander Hamilton was a founding father of the United States and apart of the
federalist party. Both Hamilton and Burr were each other 's political rival and would insult one another until they arranged a duel to end their dispute.
The duel ended with Hamilton shooting Burr in the right side causing him to die the next day. Newspapers exaggerated the situation by making it
seem like Hamilton murdered Burr out of cold blood and dwindling his reputation as a politician. What interested me in this chapter was that in the
past they used dueling as a way to handle disputes between one another. However, I don't think that dueling was the smartest method of settling a coral
between people because it is a selfish act that is similar to suicide and risk ruining your life.
Chapter 2:
Chapter 2 consisted of Hamilton considering to resign from being the secretary of treasury if his fiscal was rejected because he would then of no use
but Jefferson suggested that he could possibly help Hamilton. Hermetic meetings were hosted at Jefferson's home, and they were arranged and called
"dinners". During these dinners Thomas Jefferson invited Alexander Hamilton and James Madison so that they can discuss the if

"Hey, you can come up. The key is under the rug," his mom said. He walked through the passageway. He came upon a courtyard with some old
tables and chairs. He walked into his building. Then he jogged up the stairs with his books. He picked up the key from under the rug. He turned the

The Power Of The Grotesque
The Power of the Grotesque in Literature It is often said that beauty is within the eye of its beholder. A statement this broad, begs the question, "what is
the true definition of beauty?" Writers such as Sherwood Anderson and Thomas Mann depict the beauty of life through the usage of the grotesque. The
grotesque is used to reveal the absolute truth and reality of humanity. However, no matter how terrifying these truths may be, it is evident that the
messages depicted and the passion evoked through them are truly beautiful. Winesburg, Ohio is a collection of short stories by Sherwood Anderson.
The episodic stories have a wide range of character types and messages and yet, they all share the common theme of the grotesque. Similarly, Death in
Venicethe novella by Thomas Mann follows a burdened artist, Gustave Aschenbach who struggles with repressed desires that are slowly liberated
throughout the story. Both Anderson and Mann use the grotesque to explain the true nature of society, their characters, and to evoke emotion from
their readers especially through the theme of obsession.
In order to truly understand the grotesque and its usage, readers must first know its complex history, meaning, and usage. Due to its wide range of
usage, the definition of grotesque changed numerous times throughout history. In literary uses, it can be defined as an "expression of the estranged or
alienated world...an attempt to control and exorcise the demonic elements in the world" (Thomson).

The Seatbelt Law, By Thomas Hobbes, And Jean Jacques Rousseau
INTRODUCTION
Every day millions of people around the United States commute daily to work, and to run their errands. In almost every state in the United States,
wearing a seatbelt is required. Many people ask why they should have to wear a seatbelt in their private vehicles, while others agree that everybody
definitely should wear their seatbelt. Should the government be able to create and enforce this laws such as this one on the public? This paper will
discuss the seatbelt law, the views of philosophers Thomas Hobbes, and Jean–Jacques Rousseau, and whether or not this law is ethical.
THOMAS HOBBES Thomas Hobbes (1588–1679) was an English philosopher who is best known for his work in political ethics. Hobbes had a
pessimistic view of the human race, however his theory has been used as a major influence on western political views. In 1651, Thomas Hobbes wrote
Leviathan, in which he states that life before government was violent, brutal, and barbaric. Hobbes continues on to argue that civil peace and social
unity are best achieved by the establishment of a commonwealth through social contract. Leviathan consisted of four books: 1.) Of Man, 2.) Of
Commonwealth, 3.) Of a Christian Commonwealth, and 4.) Of the Kingdom of Darkness. The first book contains the philosophical context, while the
second book outlines the rights of the citizens within the commonwealth. The third book argues against certain scriptures, and whether or not a person

The Lewis And Clark Expedition
The acquired Louisiana territory doubled the size of America and allowed the boundaries of the country to be extended. This acquisition of land
became to be known as the Louisiana Purchase. However, the new and unknown territory had to be explored in order to obtain an accurate sense of
the strange land and what resources it had to offer. Jefferson was in need of someone brave enough who would take on the challenge and achieve
success. The role best fit the appointed soldier, politician, and public administrator Meriwether Lewis. Lewis turned for assistance and invited the U.S
soldier and experienced outdoorsman, William Clark, to share command of this legendary expedition. The explorers marched to the unexpected
challenges and experiences that laid within the unfamiliar land. Their contributions to the extraordinary expedition provided valuable information
regarding the topography and ecology the Louisiana territory had to offer.
Appointed for the Position The Lewis and Clark Expedition covered 8,000 miles (13,000km) and took three years to complete. In order to appoint
someone for this challenging position, certain qualities had to be present. Meriwether Lewis was a member of the state militia. After several years of
serving, in 1801 he was solicited by President Thomas Jefferson to become his personal secretary. When the Louisiana territory was obtained, Jefferson
offered Lewis the lead to an expedition into the unknown land. The purpose for this

The Supreme Court Of Virginia
In any legal system, there is a notion that the chief end to be achieved is justice. Clearly no one would advocate for an unjust legal system, but what if
the clear distinction between just and unjust is not so clear? What if there are diametrically opposed moral principles supporting competing arguments?
On three occasions, the Supreme Court of Virginia has declined ruling on whether the relationship with an assailant 's wife deprives a defendant of the
right to self–defense. The Supreme Court of Virginia should deny a defendant the right to claim self–defense when the following elements are present:

It is in the public's interest to maintain a predictable standard of acceptable behavior. Without such a standard, society will fall into chaos. There are
two traditional, primary means for integrating moral reasoning into the analysis of criminal law. The first is requiring a defendant to have a culpable
mental state for most crimes. The second is the doctrine of affirmative defenses. There are two types of Affirmative defenses: justifications and
excuses. In effect, if a defendant can establish a defense, the defendant should be acquitted because society believes he took the right or at least a
tolerable action. Excuses, invoke the notion that while what the defendant did was not justified, the defendant "should not be held accountable for his
wrongdoing because he is not to blame for it." Despite the fact that the criminal law is essentially a moral enterprise, the legally–trained actors in the
criminal justice system rarely explicitly examine exactly what moral principles the system is enforcing. One reason for the absence of moral analysis
is that most lawyers are not trained in moral philosophy. Generally, legal education has never seriously attempted to incorporate moral principles into
instruction." Another explanation for the absence in moral reasoning in the criminal law is that there is no need for any deep moral debate concerning
the right or wrong of

The Expulsion of Freedom
According to Jean Jacques Rousseau, human beings are bestowed with the blessings of freedom during their individual genesis on this fruitful planet,
but this natural freedom is immensely circumscribed as it's exchanged for the civil liberties of the State. He indicated that the supplanting of natural
freedom is necessary for the obtainment of greater power for the greater collective community, but the prospect of obtaining superlative capabilities
comes with the price of constraints. Yet this notion of natural freedom conflicts withThomas Hobbes rendition on the state of nature because he
illustrates that nature, interface through savagery. According to Hobbes, mankind has endorsed and embraced natures temperament, because this

The illusion of a free society with unbiased laws created by the collective and ratified by the legislator, enables the society to have a sense of morality
and perform a ceremonial civic duty to uphold the laws they finance with commitment. Rousseau states in the opening page that, "Man is born free,
but everywhere he is in chains. One thinks himself the master of others, and still remains a greater slave than they." These chains that Rousseau refer
to are the constraints that are strategically placed on the freedom of the residents of the state. Since laws consult the public interest of the people
collectively and suppress the private interest of the individual, they are essentially chains on the minds and souls of mankind, because people are used
as vessels by the state to fulfill its agenda, under the guise and illusion of individual power to implement change in the collective.
The author of Leviathan, Thomas Hobbes eloquently emphasizes that the state of nature is, in its rawest essence, chaotic and savage. In Chapter
thirteen of his work Leviathan, he depreciates man's role in the state of nature by saying, "the life of man, solitary, poore , nasty, brutish and short"(pg.
186). From his perspective, due to the fact that humans dwell in this catatonic state of destitution, humans naturally yearn for peace. Hobbes suggest
that through the formulation of "Leviathan" through a social contract, achieving peace is a more

The Lord Of The Flies By William Golding
The theme of The Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, is the reason society is flawed is because people are flawed. Although Piggy is
knowledgeable, he has many flaws including his laziness and physical inabilities. Ralph is an authority seeker. He sets rules and laws, yet does
little to enforce them. Ralph wants to be the ruler, without doing the work to enforce his laws. Jack is persistent. He is rude, harsh and violent in
order to get what he wants. He wants to be supreme. Piggy's flaws are impactful in the story. His laziness and lack of physical ability hurt him in his
quest for survival. Piggy is incapable of completing physical undertakings. This, in turn, lowers Piggy 's chance of survival on the island. Piggy brings
forth a suggestion to make a sundial clock. Ralph explains his feelings about Piggy's ideas. "... his matter–of–fact ideas were dull..." (Golding 65).
"Piggy was an outsider, not only by accent, which did not matter, but by fat, and ass–mar, and specs, and a certain disinclination for manual labor"
(Golding 65). Ralph exclaims the group doesn 't have the supplies for a sundial clock and thinks Piggy is uneducated. Ralph states Piggy just thinks
of impractical ideas while he sits and does no physical labor. Piggy is different and does not blend in with the others, not only physically but he has a
unique personality as well. Ralph wants complete control of the island. He wants to be in command of everything while he sits back and does nothing.

The Life Of Thomas Jefferson's Most Trusted Servants
Among the hundreds of slaves at Monticello resided James Hemings, a young man who, through his renown family and unique skills, became one of
Thomas Jefferson 's most trusted servants. Son of Elizabeth Hemings, a half African, half European slave, and John Wayles, Jefferson 's

deciding whether to stay in France as a free man, conflict emerged throughout the country. James ' stay in France spanned from 1784 to 1789, and at
the very end of his time there, on July 14th, 1789, tensions between the rich, upper class government and the bourgeoisie erupted into conflict when
the Bastille, a nearly vacant prison , was raided. Economic crisis had caused famine among lower class citizens over previous years, and the general
populace had grown weary of the incompetence of the government. While the government 's, specifically King Louis XVI 's, plan to restore the
economy involved heavy increases in taxes, the bourgeoisie believed that the best solution was, To abolish internal customs duties and establish a
national market. To abolish guild and government restrictions on entry into particular trades and businesses and establish freedom of enterprise and
laissez–faire. To end feudal dues and tithes levied on agricultural property; rent, interest and profit to be the only legitimate forms of non work income.

How Joss Whedon Does Not Have An Origin As Dramatic
Joss Whedon does not have an origin as dramatic as some comic book heroes, but his story is almost as unbelievable in filmmaking today: a
transformation from a typecast fan favorite to the writer and director of some of the most successful movies of all time. He began his career as a
lesser–known–but undeniably talented–sitcom writer in 1988, but his fame in Hollywood really began when Marvel sought him out in 2010 to write
and direct The Avengers. Whedon's varied experience in the movie industry, unique skill set, and passions forwriting and creating made him the
perfect fit for the project; and they have helped him become one of the most admired screenwriters of the 21st century. He knows the creative
process that works best for him when writing, and he used this same process when writing the script for The Avengers. He believes that writing from
a director's point of view, being a willing and able collaborator, and finding balance in characters will lead to a great film. Applying these constants to
his writing process for The Avengers, Whedon created a coherent and compelling story that balances the characters' heroism with their humanity. Before
he begins writing, Whedon has a certain environment that fosters his creative process best. While he has always liked working in the early morning
best, Whedon's schedule has become much more unreliable since becoming a father. "You write whenever you can," he told Steve Weintraub of

The Battle Of Lexington And Concord

  • 1. The Battle Of Lexington And Concord "By the rude bridge that arched the flood, their flag to April's breeze unfurled, here once the embattled farmers stood, and fired the shot heard round the world..." primary source Ralph Waldo Emerson's poem "Concord Hymn" was written about the Battle of Lexington and Concord. Although this poem is not a good answer on who shot first during this battle, it does open the idea about the battle itself and makes you think who shot first. I believe that the Americans shot first at this Battle. What happened at the Battle of Lexington and Concord? Though it has been called a battle, it was more of a skirmish. It happened on April 19th the year 1775 in Middlesex Country, province of Massachusetts Bay during the American Revolution. The British were marching to Concord because of the arms depot of the Americans. The Americans were out–numbered, out–gunned, and not as well trained at the British soldiers. On the side of the road there were 40 to 100 speculators of this event. When the British arrived one of the officers rode forward waving his sword and called out to the militia to disperse and go home, as well as telling them "Lay down your arms, you damned rebels!" But the Americans did not lay down their arms so the British commander Major John Pitcairn told his men to hold fire as did the Americans leader, Captain John Parker, who was a veteran from the French and Indian War (1754–1763). But, a shot was fired from an unknown source. By the end of the fight eight militia men lay ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Did Thomas Jefferson Abandon His Ethics for the Lousiana... Did Thomas Jefferson give up his deeply held political values in order to purchase the Louisiana Territory from the French (P. 2)? This is the major question that has led to much debate within the early history of America (P. 1). Some historians argue that Thomas Jefferson did, in fact, throw away his commitment to states' rights and constructionism by the large purchase of Louisiana for the U.S. (P.1). On the other hand, some believe that President Jefferson supported his political beliefs, the fortification of the republican government, with the Louisiana Purchase (P. 1). David A. Carson argues in "Blank Paper of the Constitution: The Louisiana Purchase Debates" that Thomas Jefferson did abandon his political ideals when purchasing ... Balleck debates that President Jefferson did not abandon his political ethics by purchasing the Louisiana Territory (P. 14). Balleck states that the Louisiana Purchase was "the greatest achievement of Thomas Jefferson's presidency" (P. 14). With the addition of the new territory to the United States, President Jefferson secured the nation "for generations, if not centuries to come" (P. 14). Jefferson was confident that purchasing the Louisiana Territory would encourage the development of an upright Republican populace (P. 14). Surprisingly, he had many reservations about his authority to purchase Louisiana, but that did not stop him from laying the treaty before Congress (P. 19). He also knew that, by purchasing Louisiana, the Federalists power might be lost, but he still pushed forward with the treaty (P. 19). Although many historians criticize President Jefferson for giving up his most visible political convictions by purchasing Louisiana, he knew that it would double the size of the United States and ensure much land expansion for the country (P. 20). He strongly believed that the new territory was "essential to national security" (P. 21). In President Jefferson's mind, purchasing Louisiana secured the "virtues of Republicanism in an 'Empire of Liberty'" (P. 22). "The Louisiana ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Before The Enlightenment : A Traditional Social Structure... Christine Dito Mr. Martin World History–Block 1 18 November 2014 Title Before the Enlightenment, every law and every decision was made and accepted, only by the King. There was a traditional social structure consisting of the monarchy on the top, followed by the nobles and clergy, and then all of the lower class on the bottom, which included peasants, merchants, and craftsman. When the people of the Western a Society began to receive ideas from Enlightenment scholars and thinkers, the began to realize how wrong the ways of the King were. They began to revolt against and disagree with these ways of the King. These people, motivated by the ideas of the Enlightenment, challenged the traditional social and political structures of the Western society to eventually lead to human rights for everyone. Prior to the Enlightenment, the rules, laws, and social structures were set in stone, relying on the Kings and Queens to make all decisions and declare rights for them, even if they were completely unfair. People of this time argued that, "Royal power is sacred, and nothing is more firmly grounded in the Word of God than the obedience due, as a matter of faith and conscience, to lawful authority...the prince [is] one to whom obedience [is] due without exception."(Bossuet Doc. 4). They believed that God wishes for the King to rule over the people, and only those people could rule, making all decisions about the civilization on their own, and no person should give anything but ... • 4. The State Of Nature Is An Important And Relevant... Erich Harkema Prof. Wolfe 10/1/14 Intro: The state of nature is an important and relevant philosophical idea that has been discussed and debated for a long time. The reason it is such a key topic in philosophy is it delves into the reasoning behind why man had to create political society. In order to properly understand the philosophy of the state of nature it is important to look at conflicting viewpoints about it in order to understand it with less bias. Thomas Hobbes and Jean Jacques Rosseau both have differing viewpoints regarding the state of nature. Hobbes feels that man's natural state is cowardly, fearful, almost paranoid, so man created political society in order to protect himself. Rosseau, on the other hand, feels that man was much happier before political society was created. Their viewpoints differ regarding the state of nature, man's phase after leasing their state of nature, and the basis and legitimacy of the social contract. Hobbes' and Rousseau's views on man's state of nature are quite different. Hobbes feels that man is naturally brutish, and constantly in a state of misery due to the fact that everyone else is your adversary and may act as they see fit. Due to this natural state, anyone could simply kill you in your sleep, like the coward that they naturally are. Hobbes felt that because man did not understand good and evil, man responds with violence or panic: "Hobbes maintains that man is naturally intrepid and seeks only to attack and fight...And ... • 5. Thomas Hobbes And John Locke On Liberty In this essay, the contrasting ideas of Thomas Hobbes and John Locke on liberty will be discussed and critically analyzed. Freedom is the idea of being able to do what one wants to, however, in a society, laws are created to make us all equal. Laws apply to every one of us in a civilized democratic society, which is the common voice that keeps us living together without violating each other's rights.– Author's general view.7 Thomas Hobbes primarily expresses the idea of liberty using sovereignty as a model. According to him, sovereignty was established by agreement initially, but he goes on to say that sovereignty established by force incorporates the same rights and requirements of the social contract. The difference lies in the way the sovereign is retained, installed and thought of. A sovereign coming into power by universal consent is supported by the masses, as people fear each other. In contrast to this, a sovereign that comes into power by force gains support as the people fear the sovereign himself. Both of these sovereigns are mutually consented to by social contract, which is driven by fear in either case. In the state of nature, liberty was non–existent as actions were influenced by fear of death and fear of the power held by others. While fear and power are present in The Leviathan, the person has acquired absolute liberty as he handed over fear and power to the sovereign to use as tools consentingly making him responsible for his own fate should the sovereign ... • 6. The Influence of Locke and Hobbes on Government Thomas Hobbes and John Locke have authored two works that have had a significant impact on political philosophy. In the "Leviathan" by Hobbes and "Two Treatises of Government" by Locke, the primary focus was to analyze human nature to determine the most suitable type of government for humankind. They will have confounding results. Hobbes concluded that an unlimited sovereign is the only option, and would offer the most for the people, while for Locke such an idea was without merit. He believed that the government should be limited, ruling under the law, with divided powers, and with continued support from its citizens. With this paper I will argue that Locke had a more realistic approach to identifying the human characteristics that... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This absolute Sovereign will gain power when the citizens have given up the entirety of their rights to this new authority and agreeing to a covenant. This is considered a rational action, and is the only option for the body of people to smoothly come together. When that happens, an organized society forms, in which the consequences of not adhering to the rules and regulations of the covenant will be so severe, that no one would attempt to violate this contract and disobey the Sovereign. That can happen since first, the Sovereign has deadly force and is permitted to use it whenever he or she likes, and, second, the citizens have parted away with all their rights, and cannot protect themselves from this Sovereign. That fact creates a fearful, and therefore, obedient society. This limitless Sovereign is justified, based on information from the "Leviathan." As we can infer from Hobbes' views on human nature, people will always act selfishly and in an evil manner to obtain the things that they want. As a result, for people to contract into a peaceful society that will have what they want and need readily available, they must be bound by force. If this distrustful group of people had an inclination that the governing authority was weak, they would overturn it, fatefully returning them to the state of nature. Additionally, this absolute monarchy is considered warranted, according to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 8. Social Contract : The Blend Of Government And Freedom Rousseau Social Contract; the Blend of Government and Freedom Elise Rozenberg Survey of Modern History I July 13, 2015 "Daring ideas are like chessmen moved forward; they may be beaten, but they may start a winning game."[ ] These words can be applied to the progression of history. Throughout history, there have been many radical thinkers whose ideas, though initially criticized, have become the catalyst of great change. Though, the radical thinkers were met with the criticism and disdain of the people, eventually, their ideas slowly impacted society. The Enlightenment was one of the greatest time periods in history where many ideas and philosophies greatly influenced history as we know it. The Enlightenment was an intellectual movement that questioned the aspects of the absolutist regime of monarchs such as King Louis 14 of France, and strongly challenged the religious beliefs. In years prior to the Enlightenment, the people sought out answers from positions of authority, such as the church or monarchy. The Enlightenment emphasized an alternative, the use of reason to seek answers. With the emphasis on reason came many social and political philosophies that challenged the preconceived notion of divine right of the monarchy. Many enlightened thinkers, or philosophes, wrote about the natural rights of people and the role of government in society.[ ] From the Renaissance Era through the Scientific Revolution, the Church had slowly lost their influence on ... • 9. The Laws Should And Should Not Be Place Law is fluid. This statement can be interpreted in a number of ways with no exact answer. One can construe it as law being ever changing or law varying from place to place. The fluidity of law is very clearly illustrated in the assorted judgments of law itself. In particular, many are strongly opinionated regarding which laws should and should not be place. St. Thomas Aquinas, a traditional law theorist, raised many questions concerning law as he had substantial sentiments around law. He combined the philosophy of Aristotle and Christian geology to create the Traditional Natural Law Theory. Aquinas defines law as "nothing else than an ordinance of reason for the common good, made by him who has care of the community and promulgated" ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Similar to so, Aquinas declares that a law is unjust laws if it is contrary to human good and again, opposed to divine good. Additionally, just laws are the foundation to acquiring virtue. As Aquinas's claim will be elucidated and objected, one will be clear to conclude that Aquinas speaks of the truth. There are different characteristics that create a law. In the light, there are a number of characteristics that determine if the law is just. Aquinas strongly imposes that all laws must be just. If not just, then they are invalid, unnatural, and perceived as "a perversion of law" (Aquinas in Dimock, ed., 2002, p.20). Aquinas states that "every human law has just so much of the nature of law as it is derived from the law of nature" (Aquinas in Dimock, ed., 2002, p.20). The essence of natural law is to elude evil and achieve good. It is an outlet of eternal law, the legislator being God, in which He commands Nature. Natural law applies only to rational creatures, as opposed to eternal law which applies to nature as a whole. Naturally, the pursuit of good among humans come in accordance with natural inclinations that is obtained as living creatures, animals, and rational thinking. Man strives for self–preservation, procreation, and the pursuit of knowledge. With the nature of humans, and nature of natural law, it is manifestly an ordinance of ... • 10. Is Gun Control The Answer? Is Gun Control The Answer? The Second Amendment of the United States Constitution: A well–regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed. This amendment, a part of the constitution known as the Bill of Rights, describes the protection of the right people to possess whatever arms they wish. The limits of this bill are fiercely debated among pro–gun and anti–gun supporters, as well as debates within each faction. Those who choose violence to advance their political, philosophical or theological ideals do not concern themselves with a vote tally. In the 1980's a "mental illness" was removes from the list of 26 identifiable mental illnesses. The American Psychiatric Association, the organization responsible for mental classification, is the apex of subjectivity. They are responsible for arbitrarily adding or subtracting a lifestyle from a list of mental illnesses. They are also the organization that will determine who is mentally capable of owning a gun. Through comparisons made between Switzerland and Chicago, more evidence points to the problem being the people and not the tool or gun they choose to use. (Vargas, 2014). The Contributions Of Thomas Jefferson Our country was made upon the most rebellious, intelligent, and competent individuals who saw the wrongdoings in their authoritative enforcers; however, there was a red–haired Virginian who was less than intimidating yet more literate and educated; he was credited for driving the nail in our retaliation against Britain's lack of representation against the colonists. This man's name was Thomas Jefferson, a historical figure who wasn't expected to accomplish much based on his modesty; however, he achieved so many successful pursuits in which the most notable contributions will be included in the following main points: His general background/upbringings which allowed him to gain success, his most notable contributions to the United States, and how those contributions were and still are significant. All these milestones obliged me to choose him as one of my favorite founding fathers. Along with relevance and key structure, Thomas Jefferson's background will be discussed chronologically within different main points instead of being consolidate within a single paragraph. (History Channel) To start, Thomas Jefferson's development allowed him to have a successful future. It all started April 13, 1743 in a simple farmhouse around the vicinity of Shadwell, Virginia. • 12. Hobbes, Marx, and Shah The cold, calculating, and logical brains of Enlightenment thinkers are much different from the emotional, fantasy–loving mind of Romantics. The Enlightenment was an 18th century movement in which rationality and science were placed as the number one things a human could have (Brians). The Enlightenment also propagated the idea equality and liberalism (Brians). Romanticism was an international movement which occurred after the Enlightenment during the late 1700s to the mid–1800s (Melani). It placed emotions at the forefront of human thought (Melani). Thomas Hobbes, a very early Enlightenment thinker, has a variety of ideas which do not coincide with those of Karl Marx, an early Romantic. The thinkers of the Enlightenment era, which ... In the natural state, "Every man was continually engaged in a war against all other men ("bellum universale")" ("The Philosophy of Thomas Hobbes") in an effort to gain power ("Thomas Hobbes"). In Hobbes's natural state, all men are equal insofar that each man is able to kill every other man, be it through sheer force, cunning, or by joining his power with others against a stronger foe (Williams). This "equality" leads Hobbes to claim that "there is no natural source of authority to order [men's] lives together," (Williams). Also in Hobbes's bellum universale, "'nothing can be unjust. The notions of right and wrong, justice and injustice have no place [in the state of nature],'" (Williams). The combination of Hobbesian equality and lack of a universal moral system allow there for no agreed authority to decide if anyone's actions are allowable or not. Unless "people share the same moral ideas...at the level of individual judgment," (Williams), no conclusion may be arrived at. However, identical moral ideas for each and every judgment on each and every person are possible when political authority exists. In a Hobbesian society, all men (except the chosen ruler or ruling body), agree to give up or limit their rights (especially the singular right of nature) in order to create a "social contract" which ... • 13. Comparing Hobbe's and Locke's Theories on Nature Two books that I am going to be drawing information from for my paper are Hobbes' "Leviathan" and Locke's "Two Treatises of Government." This essay will be focusing on the differences between Hobbes' and Locke's ideas on the state of nature. One of the biggest, and in my opinion most important points that makes Hobbes different from Locke is his belief that the state of nature is equal to the state of war.Thomas Hobbes was an English philosopher, who lived between 1588 and 1679. He witnessed multiple events throughout his life that later led him to write his book "Leviathan," in 1651 once the war had ended. (Hobbes PAGE NUMBER)" After that Hobbes goes on to say, "The life of man is solitary, poore, nasty, brutish, and short." (Hobbes) He argues that nothing is unjust in the state of nature. He believes that everyone has the right to do anything he/she wants because in the state of nature, there is no right or wrong and there is no law; everyone can do everything and nothing can be unjust. He says that " Where there is no common power, no law; where no law, no injustice." (Hobbes) So all in all with Hobbes, he believes that all people are equal, therefore no power over the others in the state can be established. Everyone is the enemy to everyone else, therefore, no on can secure himself/herself, there is no property, and nothing is unjust. So overall, Hobbes state of nature is very pessimistic and is not a place to survive. Locke's idea of the state of nature is that everyone is equal to everyone. He states that, "the state of nature is also the state of equality, wherein all the power and jurisdiction is reciprocal, no one having more than another.." (Locke) Locke however, does not think that this leads the people to war. He thinks that the state of nature is NOT equal to the state of war, but there is a chance of it becoming the state of war. The seeds that he had were a little bit sweeter and not as harsh which grabbed the interest of the Virginia company even though Spain had declared a death penalty to anyone who was selling it to non–spains. Once he had produced enough tobacco from his first shipment to England the price of tobacco shot sky high. John Rolfe paved the road for the development and settlement of the New world. To reach his conclusion about how the world would be in the state of nature, Hobbes first explains what human nature is and then explains the relationship between man and civil government. As Hobbes sees it men are naturally in conflict. Hobbes sees three reasons for this. They are competition, diffidence, and glory. Following from the right of nature, which states that all men have the liberty to promote their own life, men naturally desire to obtain resources so as to promote their own life and obtain some form of the good. Yet there are only so many resources, and so men enter into conflict over competition of who will be able to have the limited resources, since only one person can own each resource. . Diffidence follows from this competition. Since all men are equal in terms of mind and body, meaning that any man could kill any other man, men constantly feel threatened by other men. So, as a way promote their own self preservation, men seek out their enemies, which is every other person, and attempt to get rid of the threat they possess rather than let themselves be harmed by the threat. So, men are proactive in defeating their enemies. Finally, men enter into conflict via glory. Men value their honor and desire to be treated in a certain way. When this honor is damaged men lash out so ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, and Plato are among some of the many philosophers that have covered this topic in detail. John Locke expressed a generous view of human behavior. He states, "All mankind... Being all equal and independent no one ought to harm another in his life, health, liberty, or possessions. "1 . This quote refers to human nature, which is heavily discussed by John Locke. The television series The Walking Dead is a show based in a post–apocalyptic world where the undead roam around feeding off the last known survivors. This show is a perfect example of man in a state of nature since there are no more governments or formal civil authorities. In the series people fight to survive against the elements, zombies, and other people. This leads to survivors joining together to form groups making their chances of survival more likely. Rick Grimes is the main character in the series, he is the one who leads his group. Rick and his group face enemies along the way whether it be disease, "walkers" (zombies), or other groups. The television series The Walking Dead mostly tends to favor Thomas Hobbes views. The show portrays Hobbes' three reasons for violence quite often in the show. Particularly when the Governor's group attacks Rick's group. The Governor attacks Rick's group for all of the three reasons that Hobbes claims violence is used for. Invasion, the Governor tries to invade Rick's group primarily because he wants their home. The Governor wants to take the prison that Rick's group resides in using violence. He attacks the prison with weapons and even using a tank, so that he can gain control over Rick's territory, food, and even some of his people. On to the second reason for violence being safety. • 18. Discrimination : The American Association Of University Women Throughout history, discrimination in all forms has been an endless battle; whether it 's race, gender, religion, beliefs, appearance or anything else that makes one person different from another, it's happening every day. One significant discrimination problem the world population is combating, takes place in the work field. Women, who are as equally trained and educated, and with the same experience as men are not getting equal pay, "The American Association of University Women is releasing a new study that shows when men and women attend the same kind of college, pick the same major and accept the same kind of job, on average, the woman will still earn 82 cents to every dollar that a man earns"(Coleman). This form of discrimination dates back for centuries and derives from the common stereotype that since men provide for women and women take care of the home and children, men consequently are more effective in the career chosen. In today's world, the realization that man and woman can produce the same outcome, have the same education, and have the same capability to accomplish the same overall tasks as men is becoming more popular, especially as the idea of women not being as valuable as a man is being proven wrong. Women are almost half of the workforce. They are the equal, if not main, breadwinner in four out of ten families. They receive more college and graduate degrees than men. Yet, on average, women continue to earn considerably less than men. According to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 19. The Louisiana Territory And How It Changed America Forever The American landscape has always been that of great majestic glory. But this was not always so. The westward expansion was not always in the cards for the Americans. The French had mostly settled from the Mississippi River in the east to the Rocky Mountains in the west and from the Gulf of Mexico in the south to the Canadian border in the north. With the Louisiana Purchase the U.S acquired most of that land. How did this land help define the United States of America as a Nation? This essay will discuss the actions leading up to the Acquirement of the Louisiana territory and how it changed America forever. In 1762 France ceded French Louisiana west of the Mississippi River to Spain. The French also transferred almost all of its remaining North American holdings to Britain in 1763. Spain was no longer a dominant country and they did little to develop Louisiana during the next three decades in which they held it. Spain in 1796 allied itself with France causing Britain in a bold move to use its navy to cut off the Spanish from reaching America. The Spanish in 1801 signed in secret, a treaty with France to return Louisiana Territory to France. This set off a series of concerns for the Americans. Americans had been moving westward into the Ohio River and Tennessee River valley areas since the 1780's and the Port of New Orleans was a strategic port of entry as well as the Mississippi River which was needed if the U.S was going to be able to ship good through the Gulf of Mexico. ... • 22. The Pivotal Political Decisions On The Young American... The pivotal political decisions in the young American republic of the late 18th century were made by a select few leaders. These forerunners knew each other at a personal level, and their gregariousness had a remarkable impact on the choices they made in the future. In the words of an accomplished historian and a biographer, Joseph Ellis, these crucial decisions with an astounding aftermath came about "in a sudden spasm of enforced inspiration and makeshift construction" (3). In addition, in his new non–fiction erudite study, Founding Brothers: The Revolutionary Generation, published in the year 2000, Ellis strives to illustrate how these decisions came about "in a sudden spasm of enforced inspiration and makeshift construction during the final decades of the eighteenth century." (3). Thus, in order to distinguish between categorical truth and romantic fiction, Ellis focuses primarily on the forerunners themselves, wishing to examine how their relationships resonated through political changes. Some of his most famous include: Passionate Sage: The Character and Legacy of John Adams and American Sphinx: The Character of Thomas Jefferson, which won the 1997 National Book Award. Ancient Cyberspace Michael Galantini Professor Bissex Intro Political Philosophy April 25, 2015 Modern vs. Ancient in Cyberspace The Big Bang created the energy and matter to create the universe, and Bob Kahn and Vint Cerf invented TCP and IP which created the protocols that built the internet. Without the aforementioned, technically cyberspace couldn't exist, but the fact that it does exist, it not only has physical components in an electric, virtual world, but it can effectively become an intangible idea which is debated and analyzed. What makes the internet somewhat unique is that it is an artificial alternative realm where we humans can think, speak, and act. We have unique lives on the internet and web. We can search for info in an encyclopedia, post photos, stream music, start revolutions, buy drugs and weapons, and hack the pentagon, all through an electric system connected to billions of other devices. Those who connect to the internet all bear liberty to act, in an almost state of nature way. Yet, you are subject to the internet as soon as you are connected. Thus, based on the evolution of the Internet, certainly different political philosophers would have competing visions, ancient versus modern, about its current state and how to handle political or governing policies moving forward. To be able to properly analyze and apply political theories to a cyber–realm, we must understand that connecting to the internet is much like a social contract. • 24. The Nature Of People's Beliefs Philosophy allows people to study the nature of people's beliefs. Throughout history people's beliefs have differed. At one time people may believe one idea and decades later people may completely disagree with that idea. Not even the ideas of the law are exempt from this occurrence. Since the spoken word, hundreds of philosophers have defined law in different ways. Seeing law in different ways people can come to different conclusions about specific cases. The Fugitive Slave Law was a controversial law in American history. The Fugitive Slave Law allowed slave–owners to capture their slaves who have fled north to free states. In United States v Morris, the emancipators challenged the Fugitive Slave Law in Boston. A group of emancipators helped an escaped slave flee to Canada; the Fugitive Slave Law states helping an escaped slave is in violation of the law. In this case, the jurors let the emancipators free for helping a slave escape slavery to Canada. Philosophy gives us the tools to analyze the legality of the juror 's actions and answer the question "Did the jurors in Morris do the right thing?" Natural Law theory, Positivism, Legal Realism, Dworkin's neo–natural law theory, and Butler's critical law theory all provide different outlooks to answering this question. All of these philopshers have differing beliefs of the role of morality and law. However, these philosophies all conclude in the answer the jurors in Morris, in fact, did the right thing. (McFeely, 206) "So impressive were Frederick Douglass's oratorical and intellectual abilities that opponents refused to believe that he had been a slave and alleged that he was a impostor brought up on the public by the abolitionists. In reply, Douglass wrote Narrative Of The Life Of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave (1845), which he revised in later years: in final form, it appeared in 1882 under the title Life and Times Of Frederick Douglass." Aaron Burr was the third vice president of the United States and the vice president during Thomas Jefferson's term. Alexander Hamilton was a founding father of the United States and apart of the federalist party. Both Hamilton and Burr were each other 's political rival and would insult one another until they arranged a duel to end their dispute. The duel ended with Hamilton shooting Burr in the right side causing him to die the next day. Newspapers exaggerated the situation by making it seem like Hamilton murdered Burr out of cold blood and dwindling his reputation as a politician. What interested me in this chapter was that in the past they used dueling as a way to handle disputes between one another. However, I don't think that dueling was the smartest method of settling a coral between people because it is a selfish act that is similar to suicide and risk ruining your life. Chapter 2: Chapter 2 consisted of Hamilton considering to resign from being the secretary of treasury if his fiscal was rejected because he would then of no use but Jefferson suggested that he could possibly help Hamilton. • 32. The Power Of The Grotesque The Power of the Grotesque in Literature It is often said that beauty is within the eye of its beholder. A statement this broad, begs the question, "what is the true definition of beauty?" Writers such as Sherwood Anderson and Thomas Mann depict the beauty of life through the usage of the grotesque. The grotesque is used to reveal the absolute truth and reality of humanity. However, no matter how terrifying these truths may be, it is evident that the messages depicted and the passion evoked through them are truly beautiful. Winesburg, Ohio is a collection of short stories by Sherwood Anderson. The episodic stories have a wide range of character types and messages and yet, they all share the common theme of the grotesque. Similarly, Death in Venicethe novella by Thomas Mann follows a burdened artist, Gustave Aschenbach who struggles with repressed desires that are slowly liberated throughout the story. Both Anderson and Mann use the grotesque to explain the true nature of society, their characters, and to evoke emotion from their readers especially through the theme of obsession. In order to truly understand the grotesque and its usage, readers must first know its complex history, meaning, and usage. Due to its wide range of usage, the definition of grotesque changed numerous times throughout history. In literary uses, it can be defined as an "expression of the estranged or alienated world...an attempt to control and exorcise the demonic elements in the world" (Thomson). ... Of Commonwealth, 3.) Of a Christian Commonwealth, and 4.) Of the Kingdom of Darkness. The illusion of a free society with unbiased laws created by the collective and ratified by the legislator, enables the society to have a sense of morality and perform a ceremonial civic duty to uphold the laws they finance with commitment. Rousseau states in the opening page that, "Man is born free, but everywhere he is in chains. One thinks himself the master of others, and still remains a greater slave than they." These chains that Rousseau refer to are the constraints that are strategically placed on the freedom of the residents of the state. Since laws consult the public interest of the people collectively and suppress the private interest of the individual, they are essentially chains on the minds and souls of mankind, because people are used as vessels by the state to fulfill its agenda, under the guise and illusion of individual power to implement change in the collective. The author of Leviathan, Thomas Hobbes eloquently emphasizes that the state of nature is, in its rawest essence, chaotic and savage. • 38. The Life Of Thomas Jefferson's Most Trusted Servants Among the hundreds of slaves at Monticello resided James Hemings, a young man who, through his renown family and unique skills, became one of Thomas Jefferson 's most trusted servants. Son of Elizabeth Hemings, a half African, half European slave, and John Wayles, Jefferson 's Father–in–Law, James was a half brother of Martha Jefferson. James and his direct siblings, although considered to be black based on the ethnicity of their mother, were actually only one fourth African, with the remaining three fourths of his ethnicity being European. This led their appearance to be described as "bright" when compared to the other slaves. The blood connection kept the Hemings family closer to the Jefferson family than any other slaves. James ... While James Hemings was deciding whether to stay in France as a free man, conflict emerged throughout the country. James ' stay in France spanned from 1784 to 1789, and at the very end of his time there, on July 14th, 1789, tensions between the rich, upper class government and the bourgeoisie erupted into conflict when the Bastille, a nearly vacant prison , was raided. Economic crisis had caused famine among lower class citizens over previous years, and the general populace had grown weary of the incompetence of the government. While the government 's, specifically King Louis XVI 's, plan to restore the economy involved heavy increases in taxes, the bourgeoisie believed that the best solution was, To abolish internal customs duties and establish a national market. To abolish guild and government restrictions on entry into particular trades and businesses and establish freedom of enterprise and laissez–faire. • 40. How Joss Whedon Does Not Have An Origin As Dramatic Joss Whedon does not have an origin as dramatic as some comic book heroes, but his story is almost as unbelievable in filmmaking today: a transformation from a typecast fan favorite to the writer and director of some of the most successful movies of all time. He began his career as a lesser–known–but undeniably talented–sitcom writer in 1988, but his fame in Hollywood really began when Marvel sought him out in 2010 to write and direct The Avengers. Whedon's varied experience in the movie industry, unique skill set, and passions forwriting and creating made him the perfect fit for the project; and they have helped him become one of the most admired screenwriters of the 21st century. He knows the creative process that works best for him when writing, and he used this same process when writing the script for The Avengers. He believes that writing from a director's point of view, being a willing and able collaborator, and finding balance in characters will lead to a great film. Applying these constants to his writing process for The Avengers, Whedon created a coherent and compelling story that balances the characters' heroism with their humanity. Before he begins writing, Whedon has a certain environment that fosters his creative process best. While he has always liked working in the early morning best, Whedon's schedule has become much more unreliable since becoming a father. "You write whenever you can," he told Steve Weintraub of Collider. "Whenever you're given the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
