1. Negotiation Experts Predict Prime Minister Julia Gillard to Pull Out All Stops
in Carbon Tax Announcement
This weekend, the speechwriters for Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard will, according to
negotiation experts Rick Otton and Iven Frangi, need to draw upon high level persuasion
techniques. When revealing the details of her government’s proposed carbon tax, the PM will
need to appease industry, environmentalists and, importantly, voters.
Sydney, Australia (PRWEB) July 07, 2011 -- Australian Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, faces the nation this
weekend, delivering an address that she hopes will go some way to appeasing voters who are smarting from her
broken promise on the introduction of a carbon tax. The persuasion techniques she will use, however, will need
to be directed to diverse groups.
Negotiation expert, Rick Otton, believes that Ms Gillard needs to appeal not just to the powerful lobby groups,
but to the man in the street as well.
“The Prime Minister is languishing in the opinion polls.” said Mr Otton. “Despite having the endorsement of
high profile personalities like Cate Blanchett, and the support of environmentalists, the most recent Newspoll
shows that carbon tax issue is not popular with voters.”
The Newspoll published a week ago had Ms Gillard’s Labor Party with just 30 per cent of the primary vote.
Iven Frangi, a specialist in the field of persuasion techniques believes The Prime Minister’s speechwriters will
be working overtime to ensure her message delivers the results that her party needs.
“Ms Gillard’s address needs to appease some very powerful stakeholders, including those that comprise the
Australian Trade and Industry Alliance” he said. “Any assistance packages for industry will draw upon Ms
Gillard’s highly refined negotiation skills if they have any chance of success.”
Mr Otton agrees. “With the Green’s Party now holding the balance of power in the Senate, the Prime Minister is
under even more pressure” he said. “While under the pressure of negotiation with both big business and the
Greens, she needs to be ever mindful of how voters perceive they will be impacted by this tax, especially in
these challenging economic times.”
Mr Otton and Mr Frangi both teach the use of negotiation skills and persuasion techniques for business and
personal success, and believe that Ms Gillard’s Sunday address to the nation will be crucial to her continued
political success.
