MYO
• The term MYO means muscles.
• The MYO Gesture Control Armband is a new innovation in technology
developed by a Canada based hardware start-up named Thalmic
Labs.
• The start-up is not older than two years and they started selling the armband in
the end of 2014.
• The MYO gesture control armband has also found its place in the list of The Most
Innovative Gadgets of IFA 2015.
• The MYO is an armband that slips around your forearm, and using motion and muscle
sensors, is able to track your movements and gestures into input commands. The result is a
hands-free control system that will work with your computer, smartphone, tablet, television,
or robot.
Description of the Device
How Does a MYO Work?
• Using EMG sensors, the MYO armband measures electrical activity from your muscles to detect five gestures
made by your hands.
• Electromyography (EMG) is an electro diagnostic medicine technique for evaluating and recording the electrical
activity produced by skeletal muscles. An electromyograph detects the electrical potential generated by muscle
cells when these cells are electrically or neurologically activated.
• Using a 9-axis IMU, MYO senses the motion, orientation and rotation of your forearm. It armband transmits this
information over a Bluetooth Smart connection to communicate with compatible devices.
• The 9-axis IMU(Inertial Measurement Unit) incorporates three sensors - an ITG-3200 (MEMS triple-axis gyro),
ADXL345 (triple-axis accelerometer), and HMC5883L (triple-axis magnetometer) - to give you nine degrees of
inertial measurement.
Various Gestures detected by of the MYO
Gesticulation
With the same idea what gesticulation depicts we plan to design the interface and applications that
will work in synchronization to the hand gestures and will act according to the expected action
stored in them.
What’s the idea?
The idea is to gain insights of this great innovative device and attempts to create multi platform
interfaces that interact with MYO to perform operations and reduce distance dependency of
devices.
Stages
Stage 1
Platform – Windows
The first stage is based on the development of an interface basically a connector that will be used as a remote control
connector to various photo viewer devices present on the platform. MYO will act as a remote in the scene and using
various gestures the presentation of photos will be managed.
Stage 2
Platform – Android
The brief aim is to develop an all in one application that will automatically detect the nearest myo and will connect
automatically as soon as the myo is in the range. The functionalities of the application includes
• Handle various receivers of the mobile (Call Receiver, Message receiver)
• A multi screen supported music application
• A photo viewer integrated with the default camera.
• A casting interface to interact with Android TV. ( In Future)
Future Scopes
• Home Automation
• Gaming
• Blind Teaching
• E-Learning
• Motion Detection
Thank You
