         Strong Desire—Wise
                Action
On Saturday morning, Aunt Polly sends Tom out to whitewash the fence. Jim
passes by, and Tom tries to get him to do some of the whitewashing in return
for a “white alley,” a kind of marble. Jim almost agrees, but Aunt Polly
appears and chases him off, leaving Tom alone with his labor.
A little while later, Ben Rogers, another boy Tom’s age, walks by. Tom
convinces Ben that whitewashing a fence is great pleasure, and after some
bargaining, Ben agrees to give Tom his apple in exchange for the privilege of
working on the fence. Over the course of the day, every boy who passes ends
up staying to whitewash, and each one give Tom something in exchange. By
the time the fence has three coats, Tom has collected a hoard of miscellaneous
treasures. Tom muses that all it takes to make someone want something is to
make that thing hard to get.

Saturday morning came. All the summer world was bright and fresh
and full of life. Tom appeared in front of the house with paint and a
big brush. He looked at the fence, and all joy left him. A deep sadness
settled upon his heart. The fence was long and high. He wet the brush
and moved it along the top board. He did it again, and did it again.
He looked at what he had done. The painted part was very, very small.
The whole fence was very large. He sat down. He felt that he could not

  • 1. Chapter 2 Reading From: Camilo Ceballos Rozo. Strong Desire—Wise Action
  • 2. On Saturday morning, Aunt Polly sends Tom out to whitewash the fence. Jim passes by, and Tom tries to get him to do some of the whitewashing in return for a “white alley,” a kind of marble. Jim almost agrees, but Aunt Polly appears and chases him off, leaving Tom alone with his labor. A little while later, Ben Rogers, another boy Tom’s age, walks by. Tom convinces Ben that whitewashing a fence is great pleasure, and after some bargaining, Ben agrees to give Tom his apple in exchange for the privilege of working on the fence. Over the course of the day, every boy who passes ends up staying to whitewash, and each one give Tom something in exchange. By the time the fence has three coats, Tom has collected a hoard of miscellaneous treasures. Tom muses that all it takes to make someone want something is to make that thing hard to get. Questions 1) What was Tom's Saturday job for punishment? 2) How did Tom escape his punishment of washing the fence? 3) What did Tom do instead of whitewashing the fence? 4) What was the reward tom got for whitewashing the fence?

  • 4. PHONEMES FROM: YENNIFER OSPINA VALDIRIS PRONUNCIATION: FIND THE FIND THE MISTAKES AND INCORRECT FHONEMES. Saturday morning came. All the summer world was bright and fresh and full of life. Tom appeared in front of the house with paint and a big brush. He looked at the fence, and all joy left him. A deep sadness settled upon his heart. The fence was long and high. He wet the brush and moved it along the top board. He did it again, and did it again. He looked at what he had done. The painted part was very, very small. The whole fence was very large. He sat down. He felt that he could not continue. | ˌsætədi ˈmɔnɪŋ keɪm | ɔːl ðə ˈsʌmə wɜːld wez braɪt ənd freʃ | ənd fʊl əv laɪf | tɒm əˈpɪəd ɪn frʌnt əv ðə ˈhaʊs wɪð peɪnt ənd eɪ | bɪɡ brʌʃ | hi lokt ət ðə fens | ənd ɔːl dʒcɪ left ɪm | ə diːp ˈsædnəs | ˈsetl̩d əˈpɒn ɪz hɑːt | ðə fens wəz ˈlɒŋ ənd haɪ | hi wet ðə brʌʃ ənd muːvd ɪt əˈlɒŋ ðə tɒp bɔːd | hi dɪd ɪt əˈɡen | ənd dɪd ɪt əˈɡen |hi lʊkt ət ˈwɒt hi həd dʌn | ðə ˈpeɪntɪd pɑːt wəz ˈveri | ˈveri smɔːl | ðə həʊl fens wəz ˈveri lɑːdʒ | hi set daʊn | hi felt ðət hi kəd nɒt kənˈtɪnjuː |
