CHAPTER THREE
ACTIVITIES I WAS ASSIGNED TO
3.0 INTRODUCTION
This chapter consists of the activities I was given during my internship exercise as discussed
below;
3.1. Hardware and maintenance
This was my first activity I worked in the field of hardware and maintenance through repairing
clients computers which were no longer working or having different problems mastered different
During my internship I was assigned to a department for the hardware were by in this department
assembling was done that’s to say I used to assemble hardware components such as hard disks,
CD ROMS placing In RAM chips the CPU that at times called the processor, power supply etc.
Equipments I used
Small brushes to clean the motherboard,
Screw driver for opening components,
Blower for removing dust from different components
Steps I followed during windows installation
I Inserted the Windows 7 operating system disk into the DVD drive, this time I used windows 7
Ultimate 32-bit and then restarted your computer after setting it to boot from the CD/DVD.The
following screen Appeared.
Language selection option appears by default the selection English which I used.
7
I clicked on Install now to start the windows installation
After accepting the Terms of agreement I selected Custom installation for a fresh copy of
windows to be installed instead of an upgrade.
I selected Windows Ultimate 32 bit
I selected the partition I wanted windows to be installed and formatted it using the advanced
option as seen below;
7
Then windows installation continued as seen in the figure below;
After the above process I was almost done , I entered the computer name and password I wanted
to use after the automatic rebooting of the computer.
I then installed antivirus and different application softwares.
2. Networking
I configured a new computer to access internet. The computer was new in Natsi and had internet
settings not configured. I was directed by the field trainer on the procedures of how to set IP
addresses and other configurations. Our supervisor took us in internal audit room to get the
settings. He told me to follow the following steps cmd>>cd>>ipconfig/all>>enter the
The supervisor told me to copy the ip address and the gateway on the paper to be transferred to a
new computer I followed the following steps to configure the ip address to this computer.
Steps I followed
Start>>control panel>>internet and network connection>>local area network>>properties>>ip
protocols>> I then entered the addresses copied from the working computer.
The trainer advised me to change the ip address by increasing from 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.1.1 to
avoid sharing the same address. I completed filling and saved the changes. This solved the problem
and the computer accessed internet immediately.
I terminated wires by use of RJ45 cabling in a straight through connection. I used a straight through
since network cables were to connect computers to a switch.
I was sent, to the office of the managing director to connect the computer on a printer which had
lost connection. We followed these steps to trouble shoot VLAN connection; My
7
computer>>printers and faxes>>share>>add a computer>>. Click, connect to a network>> next
and then complete the wizard by selecting a computer name.
During my internship training I discovered what a hassle it is to be shoved aside when someone
else needs the printer--which happens to be attached to your PC or connecting different computers
to communicate. It is also probably tired of running up and down the stairs to transfer files using
floppy disks. And no one likes fighting over the only computer with Internet access. No wonder I
was interested in networking.
I covered three different options here, based on the three established home networking standards:
HomePNA 2.0 (Home Phoneline Networking Alliance), which centers on home's phone line
system; HomePlug, which uses your existing power lines; and the 802.11b (Wi-Fi) standard, which
lets you go wireless. (There's also the more recent Wi-Fi5, also known as 802.11a, Wi-Fi's speedier
successor.),SOHO(small office network) and LAN-local area network
Setting up a home network went much more smoothly since I was prepared for a few things
beforehand, no matter which option i choose. Although all networking kits come with adapters
and the other components i needed, such as phone line cables or USB cables, i still wanted to have
a few other things worked out before i plugged anything in.
Equipments I used in networking
RJ45 connectors for connecting on the end sides of cables
CAT5 cables
Climping tools
Network interface cards among others
I followed the steps below while trying to put up networks
Visiting the home networking company's Web site and make sure you have the most current drivers
for your operating systems. You might have Windows Mellenium on your PCs at home, for
instance, and you may not get the right drivers for Millennium on the CD bundled with the
networking kit.
Have your Windows installation CDs handy for each PC to be networked; you may need to install
Windows' own network drivers while setting up your home network.
Choose a name for your network (also referred to as a workgroup). Something descriptive is
usually best, such as your family name or the name of your small business. Wireless networks will
also need another name (a network identification code or SSID, which stands for Service Set
Identifier). It doesn't matter if the workgroup name and SSID are the same.
7
Decide on unique names for each computer. Although you can use literal, descriptive names like
"Office" or "Games," you might as well be creative.
Web designing,
I also got skills in web designing using Dreamweaver for designing user interface and mysql to
connect to the databases. I gained valuable experience in making connections to the database and
creating sites.
I started on installing Wampserver and mastering commands using mysql console. I also practiced
CMS designing for some websites like wordpress.Joomla, drupal among others and also covering
web hosting and domain name registration. For hosting we used infopoint and it was the one we
used for domain name registration.
Procedures I used to install Word press on wampserver
Setting Up a DatabaseforWordPress
I first step I used was to setup database in WampServer, it comes with phpMyAdmin, a web based
application to manage MySQL databases. Click on the Wampserver icon in windows taskbar and
then click on phpmyadmin. phpMyAdmin opened in a new browser window.i Clicked on
Databases in phpmMyAdmin to create a new database for WordPress. Chose a name for my
database and click on Create button.
I Downloaded a copy of WordPress from WordPress.org. Extracted the zip file and copy the
wordpress folder. I used C:wampwww and paste wordpress folder there. You can renamed the
wordpress folder to anything you want for example mysite, wpbeginner, etc. For the sake of this
tutorial, we renamed our wordpress directory to mysite. Now open a web browser and go to:
http://localhost/mysite/ WordPress will inform you that it cannot find a wp-config.php file. Click
on the Create a Configuration File button to create it On the next screen, provided database
information. The database name will be the one that you selected. In our case, we called it test_db.
On the next screen, fill out the installation form. You need to provide a title for your website,
choose an admin username and password, and provide admin email address. Finally press the
Install WordPress button

Graphics designing using Adobe illustrator and photoshop
I got skills in photoshop CS3 through creating attractive images, editing pictures and mastering all
tools used.
How I changed a photo background
I got interested in Photoshop when I realized that it could pluck a person out of a photo and then
paste him/her onto a totally new background, here I used the extract filter function one of the cool
features I learnt. Photoshop has the excellent “Extract” filter built especially for such tasks.
Photoshop CS3 however, no longer features the Extract filter. So we I first looked at how to use
the extract tool to pull off the maneuver, then briefly I enabled the extract filter in CS4 or use an
alternative to the Extract filter. Let’s get working straight away.
I found the Extract filter under the Filter menu. The Extract filter is very useful to cut out or extract
a person/object from the photo and then use it on another photo to change the background of the
original photo. The tool is very simple to use. Although it opens a giant dialog box there is really
no need to be intimidated by it. First off, I went ahead and check the Smart highlighter box right
away. Now chose the highlighter tool and draw around the object you want to extract. I made sure
i covered the edges; this means that the highlight stroke should roughly lie half on the object i
wanted to extract and half on the background.
I duplicated the layer before starting the extract filter. That way, you still had the original image
when extract finishes. Now I used Ctrl + Click on the extracted layer’s thumbnail to load it as a
7
selection. I now used Select > Refine Edges to improve the selection and hence the extract. Once
done hit Ctrl + C and then Ctrl + V to get the extracted-refined object on its own layer.
Another program we used in graphics designing is Adobe illustrator; I used it to create business
cards, posters, calendars, flyers among others.
How I created business cards
First thingI did wasto setup print-readybusinesscardsusingIllustratoristo create a new artboard and
set up the size. To create a new artboard, select File -> New from the menuat the top. The dimensions
should be 3.75x2.25" and that includes the 1/8" bleed on each edge. We need to ensure that the raster
effects is set to 300 dpi and color mode is set to CMYK. Once we have all this set, just hit OK.
Next I needed to add our guides that will show where the Bleed, Trim and the Critical Area are.
BLEED AREA: 1/8” on each edge . Where all the background, images, color should extend out to.
TRIM AREA: Showing where the card is going to be cut.
CRITICALMARGIN:1/8” from the trimline.Keepimportantgraphicsandtextwithinthismargintoprevent
anythingtobe close tothe edge ortrimmed off (Tocreate anew guideyouneedtoclickonthe Rulerarea
on the edge of the Illustrator artboard and drag into the document. If you don’t see the Rulers please
select View -> Show Rulers to activate them)

CHAPTER FOUR:
LIST OF SKILLS GAINED, RECOMMENDATIONS AND CONCLUSION
4.1 Skills I obtained
These included hardware and maintenance, windows installation, networking, customer care
among others.I got experience in transformation of resources for strategic successfulness of the
organization. This involved creation of a good relationship with staff members and clients. It also
involved use of equipments and devices in a well organized manner.
I learnt practical knowledge in principles of information technology through practicing different
activities.
4.2 Internship experience assessment
Basing on the over all IT related activities I performed at Natsi Technologies, I conclude by saying
that the internship was excellent and met my expectations.
In my internship I observed most of the departments in the organization. I analyzed all departments
basing on customer care, management, and general operations.
In my analysis I obtained the following table showing general performance;
Comments on the findings
The findings have showed that Natsi Technologies is performing with a distinction though some
improvement in some departments is needed.
4.3 Recommendations for the problems
I recommend the organization to buy more computers because those ones which exists are not
enough and also to purchase the generator in order to overcome the problem of load shedding.
4.4 Over all conclusion
I had a hand on practical internship applicable and appropriate to my course of Information
Technology. This internship satisfied all my intended objectives and I benefited a lot.

  • 10. 7 CHAPTER THREE ACTIVITIES I WAS ASSIGNED TO 3.0 INTRODUCTION This chapter consists of the activities I was given during my internship exercise as discussed below; 3.1. Hardware and maintenance This was my first activity I worked in the field of hardware and maintenance through repairing clients computers which were no longer working or having different problems mastered different During my internship I was assigned to a department for the hardware were by in this department assembling was done that’s to say I used to assemble hardware components such as hard disks, CD ROMS placing In RAM chips the CPU that at times called the processor, power supply etc. Equipments I used Small brushes to clean the motherboard, Screw driver for opening components, Blower for removing dust from different components Steps I followed during windows installation I Inserted the Windows 7 operating system disk into the DVD drive, this time I used windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit and then restarted your computer after setting it to boot from the CD/DVD.The following screen Appeared. Language selection option appears by default the selection English which I used.
  • 11. 7 I clicked on Install now to start the windows installation After accepting the Terms of agreement I selected Custom installation for a fresh copy of windows to be installed instead of an upgrade. I selected Windows Ultimate 32 bit I selected the partition I wanted windows to be installed and formatted it using the advanced option as seen below;
  • 12. 7 Then windows installation continued as seen in the figure below; After the above process I was almost done , I entered the computer name and password I wanted to use after the automatic rebooting of the computer. I then installed antivirus and different application softwares. 2. Networking I configured a new computer to access internet. The computer was new in Natsi and had internet settings not configured. I was directed by the field trainer on the procedures of how to set IP addresses and other configurations. Our supervisor took us in internal audit room to get the settings. He told me to follow the following steps cmd>>cd>>ipconfig/all>>enter the The supervisor told me to copy the ip address and the gateway on the paper to be transferred to a new computer I followed the following steps to configure the ip address to this computer. Steps I followed Start>>control panel>>internet and network connection>>local area network>>properties>>ip protocols>> I then entered the addresses copied from the working computer. The trainer advised me to change the ip address by increasing from 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.1.1 to avoid sharing the same address. I completed filling and saved the changes. This solved the problem and the computer accessed internet immediately. I terminated wires by use of RJ45 cabling in a straight through connection. I used a straight through since network cables were to connect computers to a switch. I was sent, to the office of the managing director to connect the computer on a printer which had lost connection. We followed these steps to trouble shoot VLAN connection; My
  • 13. 7 computer>>printers and faxes>>share>>add a computer>>. Click, connect to a network>> next and then complete the wizard by selecting a computer name. During my internship training I discovered what a hassle it is to be shoved aside when someone else needs the printer--which happens to be attached to your PC or connecting different computers to communicate. It is also probably tired of running up and down the stairs to transfer files using floppy disks. And no one likes fighting over the only computer with Internet access. No wonder I was interested in networking. I covered three different options here, based on the three established home networking standards: HomePNA 2.0 (Home Phoneline Networking Alliance), which centers on home's phone line system; HomePlug, which uses your existing power lines; and the 802.11b (Wi-Fi) standard, which lets you go wireless. (There's also the more recent Wi-Fi5, also known as 802.11a, Wi-Fi's speedier successor.),SOHO(small office network) and LAN-local area network Setting up a home network went much more smoothly since I was prepared for a few things beforehand, no matter which option i choose. Although all networking kits come with adapters and the other components i needed, such as phone line cables or USB cables, i still wanted to have a few other things worked out before i plugged anything in. Equipments I used in networking RJ45 connectors for connecting on the end sides of cables CAT5 cables Climping tools Network interface cards among others I followed the steps below while trying to put up networks Visiting the home networking company's Web site and make sure you have the most current drivers for your operating systems. You might have Windows Mellenium on your PCs at home, for instance, and you may not get the right drivers for Millennium on the CD bundled with the networking kit. Have your Windows installation CDs handy for each PC to be networked; you may need to install Windows' own network drivers while setting up your home network. Choose a name for your network (also referred to as a workgroup). Something descriptive is usually best, such as your family name or the name of your small business. Wireless networks will also need another name (a network identification code or SSID, which stands for Service Set Identifier). It doesn't matter if the workgroup name and SSID are the same.
  • 14. 7 Decide on unique names for each computer. Although you can use literal, descriptive names like "Office" or "Games," you might as well be creative. Web designing, I also got skills in web designing using Dreamweaver for designing user interface and mysql to connect to the databases. I gained valuable experience in making connections to the database and creating sites. I started on installing Wampserver and mastering commands using mysql console. I also practiced CMS designing for some websites like wordpress.Joomla, drupal among others and also covering web hosting and domain name registration. For hosting we used infopoint and it was the one we used for domain name registration. Procedures I used to install Word press on wampserver Setting Up a DatabaseforWordPress I first step I used was to setup database in WampServer, it comes with phpMyAdmin, a web based application to manage MySQL databases. Click on the Wampserver icon in windows taskbar and then click on phpmyadmin. phpMyAdmin opened in a new browser window.i Clicked on Databases in phpmMyAdmin to create a new database for WordPress. Chose a name for my database and click on Create button. I Downloaded a copy of WordPress from WordPress.org. Extracted the zip file and copy the wordpress folder. I used C:wampwww and paste wordpress folder there. You can renamed the wordpress folder to anything you want for example mysite, wpbeginner, etc. For the sake of this tutorial, we renamed our wordpress directory to mysite. Now open a web browser and go to: http://localhost/mysite/ WordPress will inform you that it cannot find a wp-config.php file. Click on the Create a Configuration File button to create it On the next screen, provided database information. The database name will be the one that you selected. In our case, we called it test_db. On the next screen, fill out the installation form. You need to provide a title for your website, choose an admin username and password, and provide admin email address. Finally press the Install WordPress button
  • 15. 7 Graphics designing using Adobe illustrator and photoshop I got skills in photoshop CS3 through creating attractive images, editing pictures and mastering all tools used. How I changed a photo background I got interested in Photoshop when I realized that it could pluck a person out of a photo and then paste him/her onto a totally new background, here I used the extract filter function one of the cool features I learnt. Photoshop has the excellent “Extract” filter built especially for such tasks. Photoshop CS3 however, no longer features the Extract filter. So we I first looked at how to use the extract tool to pull off the maneuver, then briefly I enabled the extract filter in CS4 or use an alternative to the Extract filter. Let’s get working straight away. I found the Extract filter under the Filter menu. The Extract filter is very useful to cut out or extract a person/object from the photo and then use it on another photo to change the background of the original photo. The tool is very simple to use. Although it opens a giant dialog box there is really no need to be intimidated by it. First off, I went ahead and check the Smart highlighter box right away. Now chose the highlighter tool and draw around the object you want to extract. I made sure i covered the edges; this means that the highlight stroke should roughly lie half on the object i wanted to extract and half on the background. I duplicated the layer before starting the extract filter. That way, you still had the original image when extract finishes. Now I used Ctrl + Click on the extracted layer’s thumbnail to load it as a
  • 16. 7 selection. I now used Select > Refine Edges to improve the selection and hence the extract. Once done hit Ctrl + C and then Ctrl + V to get the extracted-refined object on its own layer. Another program we used in graphics designing is Adobe illustrator; I used it to create business cards, posters, calendars, flyers among others. How I created business cards First thingI did wasto setup print-readybusinesscardsusingIllustratoristo create a new artboard and set up the size. To create a new artboard, select File -> New from the menuat the top. The dimensions should be 3.75x2.25" and that includes the 1/8" bleed on each edge. We need to ensure that the raster effects is set to 300 dpi and color mode is set to CMYK. CRITICALMARGIN:1/8” from the trimline.Keepimportantgraphicsandtextwithinthismargintoprevent anythingtobe close tothe edge ortrimmed off (Tocreate anew guideyouneedtoclickonthe Rulerarea on the edge of the Illustrator artboard and drag into the document. If you don’t see the Rulers please select View -> Show Rulers to activate them)
  • 17. 7 CHAPTER FOUR: LIST OF SKILLS GAINED, RECOMMENDATIONS AND CONCLUSION 4.1 Skills I obtained These included hardware and maintenance, windows installation, networking, customer care among others.I got experience in transformation of resources for strategic successfulness of the organization. This involved creation of a good relationship with staff members and clients. It also involved use of equipments and devices in a well organized manner. I learnt practical knowledge in principles of information technology through practicing different activities. 4.2 Internship experience assessment Basing on the over all IT related activities I performed at Natsi Technologies, I conclude by saying that the internship was excellent and met my expectations. In my internship I observed most of the departments in the organization. I analyzed all departments basing on customer care, management, and general operations. In my analysis I obtained the following table showing general performance; Comments on the findings The findings have showed that Natsi Technologies is performing with a distinction though some improvement in some departments is needed. 4.3 Recommendations for the problems I recommend the organization to buy more computers because those ones which exists are not enough and also to purchase the generator in order to overcome the problem of load shedding. 4.4 Over all conclusion I had a hand on practical internship applicable and appropriate to my course of Information Technology. This internship satisfied all my intended objectives and I benefited a lot.
