3. It comes from the Latin word genus which
means “type”.
Back in the past the term “gender” was only
used in the field of grammar but in 1995, a
scientist began using it when referring to
people, in a way that was related to their
sex, but not quite the same. It refers to the
socially constructed roles, behaviors,
expressions and identities of girls, women,
boys and men.
4. Talking about gender in Pakistan, there
is a huge misconception about this term
“gender”. People take it in the same
meaning as the sex of a person but what
they fail to understand is that it is
mostly used in reference to social and
cultural differences rather than the
biological ones.
6. Male
In our Pakistani society, males are the
heads of the families. They are the
bread earners and protectors of their
family. Being the decision makers
7. Female
Females are mostly responsible for
the household chores. They are tasked
with taking care of the children, cooking
and laundry etc. Working outside of
homes and, in some cases, even getting
an education is not appreciated when it
comes to females.
8. Transgender
Pakistan’s 2018 law defines transgender
as anyone with a mixture of male and female
genital features or ambiguous genitalia.
Being a transgender in Pakistan is very harsh.
There is a serious lack of education and other
basic human rights.
But in recent years, the government of
Pakistan along with the OHCHR are taking
steps to empower the trans youth.
9. Conclusion
Every gender has their own responsibilities
and roles that are assigned to them by the
society. Each gender, be it male or female,
has their own problems. The need of the hour
is that we have to understand the deeper
meaning of the word gender and give each
and every person some breathing space
because we can't just restrict anybody to
certain way of behavior solely on the basis of
their sex.
