ince, Guilin University of Technology.
Introduction: Since 1998, a total of 9834 of meteorites have
been collected from Grove Mountains (GRV), eastern Antarctica,
by the Chinese Antarctic Research Expedition (CHINARE) [1,2].
Up to date, 684 meteorites from GRV collection have been clas-
sified. Here we report magnetic susceptibility measurement of
most meteorites classified, in comparison with literature data. We
also evaluate application of magnetic susceptibility for classifica-
tion of the Grove Mountains meteorite collection.
Results: Magnetic susceptibility of the meteorites were
measured at a frequency of 958Hz, with a range of log χ (10-
9
m3
kg-1
) of 3.68-5.40 for GRV ordinary chondrites, 5.39-5.61 for
four mesosiderites, 5.73 for a pallasite (GRV 020099), 3.97-4.51
for three ureilites, 3.92-4.47 for two CM2 chondrites, 3.35 for an
eucrite (GRV 051523), 3.14 for the lherzolitic shergottite GRV
020090. The average decimal logarithm of magnetic susceptibili-
ties are 5.03±0.17 (n=171) for H-group, 4.66±0.14 (n=370) for L-
group and 4.15±0.23 (n=13) for LL-group. In addition, there are
three small pieces with fusion crust (0.24-5.44 g), mainly consist-
ing of metals. Their magnetic susceptibilities are within a range
of 5.26-5.67. However, Fa contents of olivine and Co content of
kamacite plot on the trend of ordinary chondrites.
Discussion: In comparison with literature data [3-5], the
magnetic susceptibilities of H, L, LL groups, carbonaceous chon-
drites, ureilites and the martian meteorite are undistinguishable
from the same groups of other Antarctic meteorites. The mag-
netic susceptibility of the eucrite GRV 051523 is between those
of Camel Donga and others [5]. Mesosiderites and pallasite have
the highest magnetic susceptibilities, consistent with their high
abundances of metal. Only severely weathered ordinary chon-
drites (W3) show slight reduction of magnetic susceptibility by
0.12-0.15 of log χ. Plots of magnetic susceptibility versus Fa-
content of olivine demonstrate overlapping of H-group with mag-
netic susceptibility log χ<5 with L-group, and most LL chon-
drites cannot be distinguished from L-group. However, magnetic
susceptibility of unequilibrated ordinary chondrites plays a more
important role for classification in comparison with FeO contents
of Mg, Fe-silicates.
Acknowledgements: The meteorites were supplied by the
Polar Research Institute of China. This study was supported by
the One-Hundred-Talent Program and the Knowledge Innovation
Program (Grant No. kzcx2-yw-110) of the Chinese Academy of
Sciences.

  • 1. MAGNETIC SUSCEPTIBILITY OF GROVE MOUNTAINS METEORITES. Y. Lin1 , H. Luo1 , S. Hu1 , L. Feng1 , T. Liu1 and B. Miao2 . 1 Institute of Geology and Geophysics, Chinese Academy of Sci- ences, Beijing, China. Email: LinYT@mail.igcas.ac.cn. 2 Key Laboratory of Geological Engineering Center of Guangxi Prov- ince, Guilin University of Technology. Introduction: Since 1998, a total of 9834 of meteorites have been collected from Grove Mountains (GRV), eastern Antarctica, by the Chinese Antarctic Research Expedition (CHINARE) [1,2]. Up to date, 684 meteorites from GRV collection have been clas- sified. Here we report magnetic susceptibility measurement of most meteorites classified, in comparison with literature data. We also evaluate application of magnetic susceptibility for classifica- tion of the Grove Mountains meteorite collection. Results: Magnetic susceptibility of the meteorites were measured at a frequency of 958Hz, with a range of log χ (10- 9 m3 kg-1 ) of 3.68-5.40 for GRV ordinary chondrites, 5.39-5.61 for four mesosiderites, 5.73 for a pallasite (GRV 020099), 3.97-4.51 for three ureilites, 3.92-4.47 for two CM2 chondrites, 3.35 for an eucrite (GRV 051523), 3.14 for the lherzolitic shergottite GRV 020090. The average decimal logarithm of magnetic susceptibili- ties are 5.03±0.17 (n=171) for H-group, 4.66±0.14 (n=370) for L- group and 4.15±0.23 (n=13) for LL-group. In addition, there are three small pieces with fusion crust (0.24-5.44 g), mainly consist- ing of metals. Their magnetic susceptibilities are within a range of 5.26-5.67. However, Fa contents of olivine and Co content of kamacite plot on the trend of ordinary chondrites. Discussion: In comparison with literature data [3-5], the magnetic susceptibilities of H, L, LL groups, carbonaceous chon- drites, ureilites and the martian meteorite are undistinguishable from the same groups of other Antarctic meteorites. The mag- netic susceptibility of the eucrite GRV 051523 is between those of Camel Donga and others [5]. Mesosiderites and pallasite have the highest magnetic susceptibilities, consistent with their high abundances of metal. Only severely weathered ordinary chon- drites (W3) show slight reduction of magnetic susceptibility by 0.12-0.15 of log χ. Plots of magnetic susceptibility versus Fa- content of olivine demonstrate overlapping of H-group with mag- netic susceptibility log χ<5 with L-group, and most LL chon- drites cannot be distinguished from L-group. However, magnetic susceptibility of unequilibrated ordinary chondrites plays a more important role for classification in comparison with FeO contents of Mg, Fe-silicates. Acknowledgements: The meteorites were supplied by the Polar Research Institute of China.
