Gender Inequality and Domestic Violence
The Gender Inequality remains a constant problem in our society today that leads
individuals to feel empowered or powerless. Domestic violence is a result of gender
inequality; it is the abuse and control that most women suffered. Individual’s rights
should be respected and ensured the equality in both men and women to avoid
violence. Since I was a child, we were taught about the distinction between feminine
and manly. We have certain limitations and expectations including how we dress, act,
decide and even our responsibilities in home settings. As I grow older, I learned to
practice expectations that society draws us to be and that is how I come to understand
how gender inequality limits our capabilities as a woman. I never feel that limiting my
actions means allowing me to be a victim of gender inequality not until someone
underestimates me and my abilities simply because I’m a woman and they think I can’t
able to do what they achieved. I am weaker, fragile and soft when it comes to emotions.
I am entitled to do house works and never to speak up for myself because I am a
woman and my value is not that much higher in contrast to a man. These things
engraved in my mind for so long because that is what I seen, taught and practice and
that what gender inequality made me.
In my personal experience, it gives me insights that every time we allow man to
dominate us because of their physical strength and qualities, they will feel more entitled
to be higher and powerful than us. There is no way we can guarantee the full equality
between men and women in every aspect of life but when it comes to job opportunities,
freedom and respect, we should hold 100%. Our experiences in our society regarding
inequality is very crucial in opening our eyes to all the positive regards that we may
obtain if gender inequality doesn’t hold that much towards individuals. May it be in
home, schools, public places or private institutions; we should learn more what we are
capable of becoming and our right to refrain from being violated.
Considering all this, we must change our individual mentality about the questions
regarding what gender is more powerful, what gender should lead and what gender can
do more. We should teach each other including man to have a harmonious treatment
between both parties and to be open to a balanced society. If we will work together
through it and respect each other’s differences, we may be in one world full of success
and harmony.
