3. Part One of my question What are the differences between the writing formats used for references that are supposed to be used by people within their profession/ field of study
4. Part Two of my question What reference format is used by what groups of study
5. Part three of my question Why is MLA chosen over other research formats to be taught in most literary courses.
6. The long road to finding the answers began by figuring this out APA (American Psychological Association) MLA (Modern Language Association) CSE (Council of Science Editors)
8. I talked with a group of my peers to get answers to the other parts of my question What writing format u use? For someone going to college u sure r dumb What is MLA What field of study are u in Have you ever heard about MLA
While starting this course we were told to write using the MLA format. I really did not know what that was but I looked it up in our text book and figured it out from there. What really confused me was while in one of my manufacturing classes the instructor told us that any papers written would be done in the APA format. That is when I got confused, I did not know that there were multiple writing formats nor did I know why I was using different formats in different classes. I graduated from high school over twenty five years ago and for the life of me I do not remember being instructed over any of these formats; then again if I was I don’t recall them. I struggled along with this class trying to figure out the reasoning for multiple writing formats. When Professor Mascle set up this writing assignment I knew that I must find out the answer to the questions I had about multiple formats.
This is the start of my research, trying to figure out exactly what is so important about writing formats.
I thought that by answering this question that I would be on the road to the answer of all my questions.
I really didn’t expect to get an answer to this question
What I done first was to find out what exactly MLA, APA, and CSE was and how they differed. What I found out was that each reference format had a specific format and neither of them is alike. I also found out that each format has a specific area of study that uses them
That small piece of information answered many a question that I had. Armed with that piece of information I decided to see if I could formulate an answer to the other parts of my question
We discussed writing in general and what they learned from their studies. What I found out from them is that they also wondered about the format question I had on references but really didn’t give it much more thought since MLA is their standard format for their studies since they were seeking degrees within the humanities field
My last part of the question was the hardest one to answer. I was only able to come up with a hypothesis since I could not find a solid answer from anywhere. My hypothesis is that there needs be a way to learn to cite references and MLA is used since English falls within the humanities department. The only answer I can find to support this guess came from MLA’s web site “the MLA style has been used widely by schools, academic departments and instructors for over half a century.” The article went on further to state that the MLA format is the basic taught by both high school and college..http://www.mla.org/styleSo I guess that the overall answer to my question is that it really doesn’t matter which reference format we learn, as long as we learn to give credit to those who deserve it.
