30. TRADITION The Hong Kong Jewish community, with roots dating back to the early
1900s, has played an important role in the development of Hong Kong as

A handful of Jewish merchants settled in the fertile Pear River delta, establishing vast and intricate trade networks to
supply the world with the raw materials and finished goods necessary for everyday life. Here at the gateway to the Far
East they set up rich and thriving export businesses that persist to this day. The Sassoon and Kadoorie families, early
pioneers, brought fellow Jews to the region as managers to support these trade dynasties.
The completion of the Ohel Leah Synagogue in 1902 firmly established a center for Jewish community and religion.
Since its establishment the Jewish Community has grown from 65 members to over 600 families present day.
