Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted disease caused by the herpes simplex virus types 1 or 2 that is contracted through sexual intercourse. Symptoms include painful inflamed blisters around the infected area, burning urination, and burning genital sensations. While there is no cure, treatment involves taking antiviral medications such as acyclovir, famciclovir, or valacyclovir. An estimated 25% of American adults have genital herpes and 80% have oral herpes, with 45 million Americans infected with HSV-2, which causes genital herpes.
