• Mulligatawny is a soup which originated from South Indian cuisine.
The name originates from the Tamil words X and Y and is closely
related to the rasam. It was very popular in British India by the end of
the 18th century, and by the 1800s it began to appear in cookbooks
of the day; with each cook (or cookbook) featuring its own recipe.
Recipes varied greatly at that time and over the years and later
versions of the soup included British modifications that included
meat.

reportedly arriving in India as a British stowaway. The captain of the
ship he was on ejected him from the ship at Madras port, after he

Protestant missionaries. However, the store suffered heavy losses and
the missionaries who ran the business decided to sell their shop for a
low price. X purchased the business, set up his own store and called it
X’s in the year 1844.
