1962 in California.
Cesar Chavez founds the National Farm Workers Association
obtain better wages and working conditions for grape pickers
and other farm workers. In 1965, the NFWA organized a boycott
of California grape growers. By 1970, most grape growers
signed contracts with the unions. Chavez continues to
organize California farm workers through the 1970s.

Ellen Ochoa
Ellen Ochoa was the first hispanic woman to be an
astronaut. A veteran of 2 space flights, she first flew in
space on a shuttle discovery in 1993. Sally Ride, the first
woman astronaut in the U.S.A., was one of her role models.
Ochea is not only an astronaut but also an inventor, holding
three patients. When she is in space, she says that she
loves “looking out the window at earth.”

The states that have the most Latinos influence are New
York,California,and Florida because all of these states
did something to help Latinos. New York's mayor, Mayor
Rudolph Giuliani announced that June 7 through June 14 is
Puerto Rican week in New York City. 25% of the
Californian population is Latino. Miami, Florida elected
its first Cuban-American mayor, Xavier L. Suárez in 1985.
