Welcome to

Where frugal travelers can explore and
enjoy beautiful Southern Vancouver Island
while living and working on our hobby
                   farm
We are seeking expressions of interest from CSD students, primarily in
NSSLHA Region 10. What follows is a modification of a simple
presentation sent to individual international backpackers who make a
direct and personal inquiry about staying with us. Here, we have no
control over who receives and who replies, SO a good deal of identifying
information has been blocked. But rest assured, we will promptly follow
up expressions of interest with detailed information.

On the next page, we have tried to anticipate and address student
concerns, so that if this is a poor fit for your needs, we will not waste each
other's time.
1. Students want JOBS FOR THE SUMMER. Backpackers are readily available for the start date we prefer -
April 5, and remain available during harvest months of September and October..

 2. Students quite often prioritize according to where the CASH is, the joys of travel take a backseat.
Backpackers typically want lodging and meals and plenty of free time to explore our wonderful island.

 3. This is NOT a way to make a lot of money over the summer. Your first 15 hours cover your meals and lodging.
It will probably be possible to work another 20 hours a week at minimum wage on the farm, but it is farm work -
fitness, variety, and fresh air needs will be met, but minimum wage is minimum, eh? Also, you pay your own
 transportation expenses

 4. We prefer 4 month stays, with starts on either April 5 or August 5. We will consider other start dates and
shorter stays, but be prepared to argue the case for your "star power" if you can't arrive when needed in April
and/or if you are returning to school in September.

 5. We are willing to assist you in arranging independent study credits for your stay here - we are both retired
university professors - but we cannot arrange supervised practicums.

 6. Graduate students - this is an EXCELLENT setting for writing a thesis or deissertation.

Most student's circumstances don't line up with what we
offer -- we are set up to meet the needs of international
backpackers, not students. Above is a list of mis-matches
we anticipate - glance briefly now if you wish, and then
more carefully should you decide you are interested in
applying. Hopefully, you can overcome them !
WHAT WE OFFER

We invite travelling work pairs to stay with us,
exchanging labour for meals and lodging.

Enjoy a private wifi ready furnished bedroom in an
entirely separate second floor suite of five rooms. This
wing is removed from our living quarters on the opposite
side of the farmhouse.

You can expect to share the second floor space with
one other traveling couple. In total there are 5 rooms:
two large bedrooms a sitting room, and two bathrooms.

Three hearty meals a day are yours to enjoy on the
sunny enclosed dining porch.

There are bicycles for you to borrow. It is a five minute
walk to four bus routes taking you in 20 minutes to the
busy city centre harbour - or to outlying wilderness
attractions as far away as Sooke and Duncan.

WHAT WE SEEK FROM YOU IN RETURN....
WE ARE RE-CREATING OUR FARM

            After unexpected events,
                       we are finding
              bright new beginnings.

You contribute to our new way of life
with 5 shifts a week, each 3 hours.
In previous years, visiting farm helpers needed to be strong and willing to abide by our
"house rules." We required little else.

Then, one bright September day in 2011, <name> fell a great
distance from an apple tree. He survived an extended coma, then
astonished experts and loved ones by the extent of his recovery.

He is no longer a particularly productive farm worker,
but this is his home, and he finds deep satisfaction in farm
work, which he can sustain for 15 to 30 minute intervals.
He requires accompaniment at all times.

So we still need help that is strong, and willing to abide by our house
rules. But now we also need "people people" who are VERY quietly
patient, and have experienced great personal satisfaction in helping
and teaching - be it swimming or physics, writing or dancing, bicycle
  repair or poetry.

Without doubt, over the years some amazing international young
people have stayed and worked at the farm. This pool may still suit
our new reality. But with the dramatic shift in emphasis,

we also seek expressions of interest from CSD students
who might find a career development opportunity here

Assist in running the household. Assist in maintaining the farm.

During each of your shifts, you will keep up with a During each shift you will likewise have a specific
very specific household chore, always the same area of the farm to maintain. You might, for

outbuildings are maintained assisting with crops.

Domain 3. Contribute to cognitive recovery.

Achieve comfort and competence in a specific aspect of cognitive stimulation. This will be based on
interests abilities and skills you have. If you are a trained musician, we will build on that. If you enjoy
crossword, sudoku, and jigsaw puzzles, we will build on that. If you are an avid reader or writer... or a
   woodworker....or ...

During each of your 5 shifts, you have the same specific,
routinized responsibilities in 3 domains; the tasks hardly
require 3 hours, the extra time allows you, when possible,
to involve <name> in your efforts.
Here are 2 exterior photos
and two photos of the
second story bedrooms.
You also can see the
kitchen where your meals
are prepared. The open
door leads to the enclosed
dining porch which looks
out over the hen yard and
orchard and on to the back
field.
Thank you for considering a stay at VictoriaFarm.
                      Here are your next steps.

Please send a short biographical sketch. resume optional. Please include
your school and year of study, year of birth, preferred arrival date, and
how long you wish to stay.

Oh, and please let us know if you have an avid interest in:
art (particularly drawing), music (we have a grand piano and sing,
rather badly, a great deal), literature (particularly reading aloud)
horticultural therapy, sport & fitness, faith-based living.

We will read what you have to say carefully and answer promptly.
With best regards, <name> and <wife>

In the hope that we can prevent harvesting of email addresses from this public
posting, we requet that you use this link as the means of first contact:
