ENGINEER AS A
DECISION
MAKER
Reason
 We are told from childhood that everything that
we want to do is impossible, we grow up with
this idea and as the years accumulate So to the
layers of Fear and Guilt
 As we Encounter the prejudice of fear and
guilt, Then We faced with 2nd Obstacle:
“LOVE”
 We know what we want to do, but are afraid
of hurting those around Us abandoning
everything.
 Once we accept that Love is Stimulus then
we are Faced with 3rd Obstacle called “Fear
Of Defeats” we will meet on the path..
 And Next Comes the 4th Obstacle "Fear of
Realizing the Dreams”
Decision making ?
Engineers are Decision
makers ?
 Some thoughts to start with ?
lets solve for a largest positive
integer
 Let say X=Y
 Multiply by Y
 Subtract X2
 Factorize
 Divide by (Y-X)
 That could lead to a conclusion that
 X=2X which is like
1=2
which is not correct, So what I mean to say is
Engineers are
problem
solvers?
Engineers are
problem
solvers
Decision makers
 Doctor
 Pilot
 Mechanical
Engineer
Problem Solvers
 Nurse
 Co-Pilot
 Mechanic
Engineers are
Decision
makers
 Karl compton(pres MIT 1930-1948)
 I hope therefore the increasing attention in the
institution may be given to the fundamental
sciences, that they may achieve as never
before the spirit and results of research.
 1950’s :Eng professors MS holders with job
experience
 Same time: Funding agencies created.
Problems
 We solve problems
 When we solve a problem,we get an answer
 We judge answers to be right or wrong:
 Right if the answer is consistent with the laws of nature, mathematics,
data or boundary conditions
 Wrong otherwise
 Example:2+2=4 is right , any other answer is
wrong
But what do Engineers Do?
 Make coffee?
 Have meetings?
 Deal with Vendors?
 Make stuff?
 Test stuff and watch it break?
 What else?
 ENGINEERS DO DESIGN-take away the
Design, make up the Decision, and You take
way the engineering as well.
What is Design?
 Choosing a product or system configuration
 Choosing dimensions and tolerances
 Choosing materials
 Choosing manufacturing Equipment
 Choosing rules for Product use or system
operation
 Choosing how to dispose of the Product or
System at its end of life
Design is all about
Making choices,
And the engineers who do design are
Decision makers
 A Decision is Choice taken from a set of alternatives
 Decisions are made, not solved
 Decisions are made only in the present
 Decision are based on information
 Decision always involve a Commitment of Resources
 Decision results in Outcomes
 All Real Decisions Involves Uncertainity and Risk.
A recent Survey Results Shows 80%
Engineering Graduates are not
Professionals/Decision makers?
What Actually Stopping our Current Day Engineer
to take good Decisions?
Why ?
What ?
How ?
 Lack of Proper Vision in Current
Engineering Education
 In Transparency in Examination
and Evaluation
 Lack of Student Counseling
Clubs/centers what ever..
Lack of Constructive Research
and Development(R&D) Bodies
Absence Of Carriers Forum’s like
 Gate Forum
 Core Industry Visualization Forum
 CAT Forum
 Innovation Centers
 Challenges and Competitions Forum
 Higher Studies Forum
Lack of Coordination / Interaction
 Management to Faculty
 Faculty to Faculty
 Student to Student
 Faculty with Student
All these are happening because of Mis-
interpretation of Hierarchy
 For all the above Problems/
Disturbances there is one
underlying concept which is
increasing exponentially i.e is
Current day Education has
become a Capitalistic Venture
for Business Groups
Who we call
Successful
Decision
makers?
Let us Look at Some Case studies?
Stories of those who actually faced all
these obstacles and built their fruitful
carriers at certain high positions
 Facebook-Mark Zuckerberg
 TATA GROUP- RATAN TATA
REDBUS-A TEAM OF FRIENDS
 Harsha Bhogle- Mechanical engineer
A Engineer is a Decision maker who build's up his/her carrier
improving their instinctive’s on their own
----
Our Strategic Plan needs to answer for:
 Where are You Today?
 Where do you want to stand in
Future(5,10,15.. Years from now) ?
 How do You get from here to there ?
THANK YOU
