Council (IOC), world olive oil output estimated to exceed 3.225 million tons, will
come close to the record 3.271 million tons, Spain produced 1.1 million tons or
39% of world production.

million olive trees covering an area of five million acres.

The Greek’s attachment with olive oil is deeper than any other nation.
They are historically , culturally and economically attached to it. They eat more olive oil
than any other nation in the world. Greece produces 400,000 tons of oil per year.

Turkey has a long history of olive trees and oil. Currently, the country
cultivates the number of trees which are tipple of its own population. According to
the World Bank, the total population of Turkey is 73 million while the number of
olive tree is 250 million.

26. History of Olive in
Pakistan:
• Olive was introduced first time in
Pakistan by PARC during 1986
under an Italian Project titled
“Fruit, Vegetable and olive
Project” funded by Government
of Italy
• A general survey was
conducted to count naturally
occurring olive and found more
than 80 Million wild Olive plants
in different district of Pakistan.
27. Promotion of Olive Cultivation for Economic
Development and Poverty Alleviation:
This project was awarded to government of Pakistan by the Italian government
under the Debt Swap Agreement at total cost of Rs.382,153,016 (Three Hundred
Eighty Three Million One Hundred Fifty Three Thousand Sixteen Only).
The project is in operation through PARC, s strong coordination system in KPK,
Baluchistan, FATA and Punjab provinces.
Main objectives of the olive promotional project are to expand the cultivation of
olives in selected / identified areas through new plantation in Baluchistan,
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, FATA and Potohar.
To set up a number of new olive processing facilities (4 oil mills).
28. NEED FOR OLIVE CULTIVATION IN PAKISTAN:
The total domestic consumption of edible oil is around 1.9 million tons, out of
which 1.3 million tons is being imported from abroad. As many as Rs:28 billions
are being spent on the import of edible oil every year.
The total production of banola oil is around 450,000 tons, Sunflower 77,000
tons, Canola 32,000 tons and other seeds is 700 tons per year in the country.
Hence, 70% oil is being imported against local production of 30%.
