Tree-Lighting Contest
for Community Children

Tree-lighting ceremonies are scheduled

Dec. 3 at Camp Zama and
Dec. 4 at Sagamihara Family Housing Area.
As is tradition, the lights will be turned on
by the U.S. Army Garrison Japan commander.
Tree-Lighting Contest
for Community Children

But this year, the commander is looking for children
from the community to help flip the switch
for each tree – a “Cindy (or Charlie) Lou Who”
to kick off the holiday season on “Zama-ville”
and “SFHA-ville,” just like the young character
from Dr. Seuss’ beloved Grinch book!
Tree-Lighting Contest
for Community Children

Parents can nominate their children
by submitting a short essay explaining
why they think their son
or daughter would make
a great “Cindy” or “Charlie Lou Who.”
Tree-Lighting Contest
for Community Children

Two winners will be chosen to help
the Garrison commander light
the tree – one at Camp Zama, one at SFHA.
Tree-Lighting Contest

Submissions (no more than 200 words)
can be sent via email to
usag.japan@gmail.com
no later than Nov. 25.
The eligible age for children being nominated
is between 5 and 12 years old.
Tree-Lighting Contest
for Community Children

Include whether you live
on Camp Zama or SFHA,
and your email and phone number
so you can be contacted
if your child is the winner.
Tree-Lighting Contest
for Community Children

Those who are selected as winners
are reminded to ensure
they and their child will be available to be
at the site of either the Camp Zama or SFHA tree
prior to 6 p.m. (the ceremony time)
on either Dec. 3 or 4.

What is Ready Army?
Ready Army is the Army Emergency Management
Program’s proactive campaign to increase the
resilience of the Army community by informing of
relevant hazards and encouraging Soldiers,
their Families, Army Civilians and contractors to,
“Get a Kit. Make a Plan. Be Informed.”
What is Ready Army?
Through outreach and education Ready Army calls
our Army community to action and aims to create a
culture of preparedness that will save lives and
strengthen the nation.
Get a Kit
When disaster strikes, emergency responders
address the most critical needs and may not
even be able to get to an area until it is deemed
safe. While they work on behalf of the entire
community, it is your responsibility to ensure
your family’s well-being during times of crisis.
Emergency kits to sustain for 72 hours are an
essential tool for meeting that challenge.
Make a Plan
• Ensure everyone understands the plan, and practices.
• How to communicate during an emergency.
• Consider what to do, where to go, what to take.
• Plan for members with disabilities or special needs.
• Include pets in family plan.
• Report status through ADPAAS.
• Identify a continental U.S. contact.
Be informed
• Chain of Command
• www.ready.army.mil
• www.usarj.army.mil (Local Conditions Page)
•Mass Notification System
• Command Channel 13
• Eagle 810 radio
• Family Assistance Center
Emergency Supply Kit
• Food supply for all family members for five days (ready to
eat; no preparation required)
• Bottled water
• Protective mask
• 30-day supply of prescription medication
• Over-the-counter medications
• Baby toiletries (diapers, etc.) (five-day supply)
• Toiletry articles (toothbrush, etc.)
• Feminine hygiene articles

  • 209. What is Ready Army? Ready Army is the Army Emergency Management Program’s proactive campaign to increase the resilience of the Army community by informing of relevant hazards and encouraging Soldiers, their Families, Army Civilians and contractors to, “Get a Kit. Make a Plan. Be Informed.”
  • 210. What is Ready Army? Through outreach and education Ready Army calls our Army community to action and aims to create a culture of preparedness that will save lives and strengthen the nation.
  • 211. Get a Kit When disaster strikes, emergency responders address the most critical needs and may not even be able to get to an area until it is deemed safe. While they work on behalf of the entire community, it is your responsibility to ensure your family’s well-being during times of crisis. Emergency kits to sustain for 72 hours are an essential tool for meeting that challenge.
  • 212. Make a Plan • Ensure everyone understands the plan, and practices. • How to communicate during an emergency. • Consider what to do, where to go, what to take. • Plan for members with disabilities or special needs. • Include pets in family plan. • Report status through ADPAAS. • Identify a continental U.S. contact.
