W H EN WIL L F ORENSIC L AB IS ADE QUA T E L Y ST A F F ED?
Castries, Saint Lucia September 24, 2013 As another innocent victim is
laid to rest today, The United Workers Party's Women in Action (WIA)
following its press statement of September 16th
, 2013; the damming contents of
a letter by former Forensic Consultant Ms. Valerie Fuller of the US (Star
Newspaper September 18th
, 2013); and the enlightening interview of Mr. Louis
Murray Former Consultant Forensic Scientist on the inadequacies of the Lab;
states that we are not satisfied with the non-committal comments of the
National Security Minister that The lab is properly staffed, not to say we
could not do with some additional staff, the lab is highly equipped and well-
staffed. Two months ago there was a slight problem; the major consultant
attached to that lab was in transition, one consultant moved out and a new
consultant has been brought on board .
This is a wholly inadequate response to the outrage and panic invoked by the
senseless murder of yet another young woman in Saint Lucia.
The comments of the Minister of National Security, Senator Victor La
Corbiniere, do not reflect the dire situation at the Lab and the general
lackadaisical approach of crime management in Saint Lucia. Certainly, Minister
La Corbiniere needs to do more than issue a passing comment to quell the fears
of our women and the people of St. Lucia.
We therefore, wish to reiterate our call for a full and proper explanation from
the Prime Minister, the Minister of National Security, and the Minister of
Health into the under-utilization of the Tapion Forensic Laboratory. This is a
necessary first step to bring some hope of resolution to the families of, Tricia
Denis, Gizelle Georges, Pascaline Bertin, Verlinda Joseph, Feliciana
Charles, Berthelie Mangal, Alisha Hunte, Joanne Cox, Christel Fanis and
her unborn child, as well as the most recent, Chereece Benoit etc.. All of
whom were murdered with their alleged perpetrator/perpetrators still at large.
Ends./
