2. ■ The tragic fire occurred in the second- largest city in Greece,Thessaloniki, in the year
1917.A tragedy that was marked as accidental, left more than 70,000 people
homeless. Burning for 32 hours, 9, 500 homes were burned to the ground.
■ After the fire,Thessaloniki was left in chaos. Most of the population didn’t have a place
to call home.
■ Many members of the Jewish population emigrated from the city since their home was
no longer inThessaloniki.
3. Start of the fire…
■ After much investigation by the Court ofThessaloniki, it is said that the fire began on
August 18, 1917.
■ The fire originated from a small house of refugees at Olympiados 3 which is located in
the Mevlane district.
■ The story has been told that a spark of kitchen fire fell into the pile of straw and began
the fire.
■ The fire was unable to put out due to a lack of water.
■ The other large issue was that the city ofThessaloniki did not have an organized
firefighting team.
4. After the fire…
■ Only a few days after the fire, theVenizelos government announced that it would not
allow reconstruction of the city as it was.
■ They intended to create a new city instead, according to an urban plan.
