4. SELF REFLECTION
Cultural Engagement Activity 4
In hindsight, I was extremely nervous going outside of the typical norm with some of these activities. I
am glad that I was able to use some of the things I have learned from this course and others along the
way. These activities didn’t take me to far out of my norm, but it was just the unknown and not wanting
to cast preconceived biases on other cultures given what I have learned over the years.
5. WHAT HAVE I LEARNED?
PRESENTATION TITLE 5
Día de Los Muertos is translated as Day of the Dead. Two day Mexican holiday that
reunites the living and their deceased family members. The traditional days are
November 1 and November 2 and can be celebrated all the way up until November 6
depending on the area. Upon dying, people are believed to be in the Land of the Dead,
Chicunamictlán.
10. WHAT HAVE I LEARNED?
PRESENTATION TITLE 10
In this film, it displayed blatant examples of the damaging depictions of
what the American culture may think of trans individuals. Transgender
individuals have always been apart of the history timeline as far as films go.
The depiction of most trans members being apart of the sex worker industry
comes from employment biases. 80 % of transgender people are
unemployed according to this documentary, therefore most of them are
pushed to work in this particular high risk associated industry.
11. WHAT HAVE I LEARNED?
PRESENTATION TITLE 11
In our most recent dinner get together on November 4, 2023, we discussed the norms for different
cultures. We grew up with the idea of eating before going to to others home while in some
Hispanic and Asian cultures it was distasteful or disrespectful to an elder to decline eating.
Typical with these comparisons it was a display of our socioeconomic status which might be
frowned upon. While this is not a true representation of that, some still are heavily impacted by
the culture they grew up in.
13. SUMMARY
PRESENTATION TITLE 13
I believe we should all try to immerse ourselves in other cultures
because it adds a little more value and understanding to our lives.
It helps us to be a more unified body of people when we can
acknowledge one another and our differences as well as
similarities. I will continue to try to be more culturally competent in
other cultures by engaging in more activities such as these. I am
always actively looking for new things to try and/or understand by
participating in various festival, ceremonies, and historical site
visits.
