How to Order Sushi like a Pro?
If you are new to eating sushi you might have a vague idea where to start. Sushi, that is mostly raw fish,
is something not everyone knows how to enjoy. Here’s a guide to love sushi to its best by eating it the
right way.
Sushi is something not everyone knows how to admire and how to eat. However, there is a lot to
appreciate and love about sushi. For people whose newest craving is sushi, here’s a guide to the
delicious delicacy- how to choose the best sushi food and how to enjoy the dish to the last bite.
Say no to pre-packed sushi: Sushi, no doubt, is the cynosure of the Japanese restaurants but be aware
of restaurants serving unauthenticated versions of the delectable dish. Don’t trust fish in packaged form.
The quality and freshness of fish that is pre-packed is something that you cannot always rely on.
Therefore, don’t go for cheap pre-packaged sushi lunch when you can get far better quality by paying
slightly more.
Choose cooked fish: Go for cooked seafood until you are totally comfortable with the raw uncooked
ones. It might come as a surprise to you that not all sushi is about raw fish and seafood. Some of the
most delectable sushi delicacies like Eel, California rolls, grilled squid, shrimp and clam come in cooked
form. Some sushi restaurants also serve rolls that are cooked in tempura style.
Minimal fish content: For the neophyte sushi eaters it is recommended to start with something that you
already know. There is not much difference between eating sushi and any other fish. The only major
difference is that the former is uncooked. Go for a dish that has less of fish content. Starters will like
tuna, scallop, tai, ika and ohyo for the minimum raw fish content in them. Although these delicacies
have very mild fish content in them but they do stand second to none in taste and texture.
Let the chef help you: If you have even the slightest knowledge about sushi food then you must be
familiar with the three O’s of ordering sushi- Okimari, Okonomi and Omakase. If you say omkase in a
sushi restaurant, you are asking the chef to choose your meal for you. If you are a beginner at sushi then
this is most probably the best decision you can make.
Do you need wasabi and soy sauce: Not all Japanese food demands the use of a pair of chopsticks. Sushi
is meant to be eaten by your hands. Another big mistake you might be making in a sushi restaurant is
dipping your slab of fish into wasabi and soy sauce.
