• Any activity expected of someone joining a
group that humiliates, degrades, or risks harm
• 80% of college athletes subjected to some
type of hazing
– Half is alcohol related and two-thirds humiliation
related

5. I chose this topic because I am an athlete and
even though I have not personally had to deal
with hazing, I have friends and coaches who
have. I feel that the world likes to think that
hazing is isolated to the Greek world, but
unfortunately that’s not the case. My team is
very close and I couldn’t imagine inflicting pain
either physically or mentally on any of them. In
researching this further I hope to learn what
exactly the purpose of hazing is and how it
affects those who fall victim to it.
