Editor's Notes
Welcome to this presentation which will walk you through the instructions for the Virginia Wizard assignment.
Start by going to www.vawizard.org and LOG IN using the name and password that you use to login to Blackboard.
After loggin in, click on the Career Assessment button. You may listen to Ginny walk you through the entire tour or you may jump straight to this assignment.
There are three assessment inventories that you need to complete: Skills, Interests, and Values. Remember that there are no wrong answers! Just check the box that feels most appropriate to YOU.
After you have taken all three assessments, check to see what your results are. Ginny will show you some ideas for careers that might fit with your personality, abilities, and interests. Look through the results that Ginny gives you for each assessment.
Once you have seen the individual results, click on the link to see your COMBINED results. You will notice the % numbers probably dropped and the categories may have changed.
You now need the VA Wizard Results Form from your SDV course. Here is a list of the questions that are on it but it is not the form. You will need to complete and submit the official form to your instructor for a grade. A copy can be found at VA Wizard Form.
Use the following information to fill out questions 1-3. The top three career clusters that might suit you are listed in the column on the right. On the left, you can click to look around at various jobs that fit within those recommended clusters. Choose a couple that seem interesting to you. They are listed under tabs and divided by the amount of education one would need to work in each particular field. If you see an occupation listed that you would like to learn more about, simply click on its name, and a description of it will pop up. You can choose to ADD any of these to your personal profile – try to select at least two.
Now that you have chosen a career or two to explore, click on the Careers button and search by Name, Career Clusters, or Paths of Study.
You will find detailed information about specific jobs. This information will enable you to answer questions 4 & 5. Question 6 is subjective.
There are additional tabs that will prove helpful to you. You should explore the Paying for College section in order to answer question 7, and some of you may find the Veteran’s Corner helpful. There are also some excellent links which discuss resume building and interviewing tips.
If you are thinking about transferring to a 4 year college in the future, there are some things that you should know now. Click on the Transfer button to learn about the various transfer agreements, plans, and grants to which you have access.
Finally, complete question 8 and save your VA Wizard Results Form as a document with your name and VAWiz in the title. Upload it to your SDV-100 Blackboard shell under the assignment “Submit VAWizard Here”. Congratulations on completing this mandatory assignment!
